2010 New York Auto Show preview
We were treated to a plethora of automotive news at the beginning of this month, due to the Geneva Motor Show taking place in Switzerland. Now, the industry is preparing for a next big convention, the New York Auto Show.
The show will open its doors on March 31 for the press, and on April 2 for the general public. Although not a lot of big reveals will appear, there are certainly going to be quite a few premieres for the US soil, with many Geneva exhibits making the trip across the Atlantic.
Curious to see just which are the most important reveals set to take place at the 2010 New York Auto Show? Then hit the jump to check our complete preview.
Acura
Acura will be sporting quite a few refreshed models in New York, but by far one of the most expected new models, especially by wagon fans, will be the Acura TSX Sport Wagon. While not a lot of things are known as of yet, a lot of voices claim that it will be a rebadged and slightly redesigned version of the European Honda Accord Touring.
Expect almost the same engines on the SW as the regular TSX, but you will still have to wait until fall, when the model reaches dealerships.
Audi
Audi won’t bring any completely new models at this convention, but rest assured as it will definitely showcase the 2011 A8 hybrid on US shores for the first time. For the purist petrol heads, the RS5 performance coupe will also be on show.
BMW
BMW will be showcasing some refreshed models in New York. Starting with the new 3 Series Coupe and Cabriolet, and continuing with the 2011 X5 SUV.
Besides the facelifts, the company will also showcase the Alpina B7 luxury limousine, complete with the xDrive all-wheel drive system. Given the USA’s appetite for hybrids, the 5 Series ActiveHybrid might also be showcased.
Cadillac
Cadillac will be making a lot of wagon fans extremely happy in NY, as it will showcase, after a very long wait, the CTS-V Sport Wagon model. With the extra space to haul around everything you want and the massive 556 HP 6.2-liter V8 under the bonnet, people will certainly flock to Caddy’s stand.
Chevrolet
Chevrolet’s betting big on the mid-size segment, and will showcase in New York two new versions of its upcoming Cruze sedan. The Eco one, as you might have guessed, improves on the fuel efficiency nature of the Cruze, while the RS trim will give people something better to look at until the rumored Cruze SS will make its appearance.
Hyundai
In New York, Hyundai wants to make a big splash, and has just started teasing the upcoming Sonata hybrid. As you may know, the mid-size South Korean sedan has a lot of fans in the US, many of whom won’t say no to a hybrid version.
Infiniti
Infiniti will no doubt showcase its new M sedans, but alongside the attractive models, it will sadly display the 2011 QX56, which, in lack of better words, is just plain ugly and outdated. Luckily, you’ll be able to clean your eyes with the more interesting Nissan Patrol.
Kia
Kia will be showcasing its own mid-size sedan at the upcoming convention, as the 2011 Optima (or Magentis) will be officially unveiled to the public. With a more aggressive design and tried-and-true engines, likely borrowed from the new Sonata, the Optima will attract its fair share of fans.
Lexus
Lexus is quite confident that a hatchback model can be successful in the USA, that is, if it’s a hybrid, like the recent CT 200h. As you know, the model was already showcased in Geneva at the beginning of the month, and quite frankly we’re not that impressed, given its Prius in Lexus clothing demeanor.
Lincoln
Lincoln, Ford’s luxury brand, will finally be on the receiving end of the much applauded hybrid powertrain already available on the Fusion and Mercury Milan. The 2011 MKZ Hybrid will certainly make some heads turn, but we aren’t so sure we want to pay extra for just a Fusion with a nicer interior.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz is betting big on the families which will visit the NY show, and will showcase the facelifted 2011 R Class “sports tourer” aka people carrier. Promising to combine the MB quality already available with looks that you can actually like for a change, the new R Class will certainly attract some people.
Nissan
Nissan will host a big reveal at its New York booth, with the new Juke crossover being set for its debut on US shores. The funky little model is bound to make a lot of “young, single men living in urban environments” extremely interested, but also other people not in the target demographic.
Subaru
Subaru will be presenting the newer and wider Impreza WRX in New York, aiming to borrow some of the charm of the top STI version for this lower-priced edition. New features, options and styling cues are also present, so you might want to drop by the Japanese carmaker’s booth.
If the WRX won’t get you there, then how about the already-teased 2011 Impreza WRX STI, which will receive a massive new wing to complete its aggressive package.
Those are all of the completely new announcements set to be made at the 2010 New York Auto Show, but rest assured as many carmakers might prepare some surprise announcements these days. If you’re visiting the show, you’ll certainly have a lot of things to admire, but if you won’t get to go, rest assured as we’ll cover all of the big unveils right here, on RPMGO.com
