2011 BMW 5 Series officially unveiled, we’ve got all the juicy details and photos
I’m pretty sure almost any BMW fan has had this day marked in his calendar, as the Bavarian automaker revealed the its next generation 5 Series sedan, paving the way of the new design line into the mainstream market, after it was premiered on models like the 7 Series, 5 Series GT and X1.
The new generation boasts the longest wheelbase in its segment, as well as a very aggressive but also balanced style, on the outside as well as on the inside of the car, with the German carmaker saying that the new sixth generation of the 5 Series will guarantee an imposing presence anywhere.
But what’s more interesting is the engine lineup the Bavarian automaker has prepared for the new 5 Series, starting with the 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel, which delivers 135 kW or 184 HP, but consumes just 5.0 liters/100 km in the EU5 cycle (56.6 mpg imp), largely thanks to the standard Auto Start Stop system. The top-of-the-range, at least until the M5 arrives, will be the 550i, powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine outputting 300 kW or 407 HP.
For people who don’t want as much power from the new 5 Series, a variety of straight six-cylinder units will be offered, with the petrol ones developing 306 HP in the 535i, 258 HP in the 528i and 204 HP in the 523i. Diesel fans will also be able to opt for straight-six units, generating 245 HP in the 530d and 204 HP in the 525d. Emissions wise, all of the engines fulfill Euro 5 regulations, with the 530d BluePerformance managing to comply with Euro 6 ones.
Fans of interior gadgets will be pleased to hear that the Head-Up Display is once again preeminently featured, alongside the iDrive system. A variety of other safety systems including collision detection, surround view and many others also present in the new 5 Series, as well as airbags and other things.
