2012 Chevrolet Cobalt goes official
This past summer, General Motors unveiled at the Buenos Aires motor show a concept version of the Chevrolet Cobalt and now they’ve released the production version which is scheduled to go on sale in 40 countries across Europe, Middle East, Africa and South America. The car won’t be available in North America as it has been successfully replaced by the Cruze sedan.
Brazil will be the first country where the Cobalt will be available, and this is one of the four places where the car will be produced. In fact, the car was entirely designed and engineered by GM’s Brazilian arm.
The new generation of the Chevrolet Cobalt measures 176 inches (4,479mm) long, 68.3 inches (1,735mm) wide and it is 59.6 inches (1,514 mm) tall. Its wheelbase measures 103.1 inches (2,620mm) long, which puts the car’s external dimensions right between the Sonic/Aveo and the aforementioned Cruze sedan.
Design-wise, this isn’t what you would call a good looking car, but since we’re talking about a budget-friendly automobile, this is somewhat understandable. Chevrolet says that the interior cabin of the Cobalt is able to accommodate five adults while the trunk space has a capacity of 19.9 cubic feet (563 liters).
The model that will be sold in Brazil will be available with two engines: a flex-fuel 1.4-liter that produces 102 hp when it is running on ethanol or 97 hp when it’s on gasoline; the other engine is a 1.8-liter unit that is mated exclusively to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. GM mentioned that in other markets, the 2012 Chevrolet Cobalt will be available with a wider array of engines, including 4-cylinders that range from 1.3- to 1.8-liter units.
The starting price for the car in Brazil is of R$ 39,980 which is about $23,000.
