2012 Opel Zafira Revealed

2012 Opel Zafira

We were expecting to see the launch of the 2012 Opel Zafira later on this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but it seems that the German automaker is eager to introduce its new 7-seat people carrier. Frankly, I’m glad they did because ever since I saw the concept, I wanted to see how the production version looks like. The good news is that they haven’t messed around with the exterior appearance and it looks just about the same as the concept.

The original Zafira was introduced by Opel back in 1999 and it was then followed by a second generation that debuted in 2005. The new model looks way better than the other two and Opel hopes that with this attractive design and a high quality interior they will expand their customer base.

The front of the car looks very nice with those twin “boomerang” graphics that start from the headlights and end at the fog lamps. In addition, the company’s traditional “blade” sculpts on the Zafira’s body sides give the car a very attractive appearance.

As far as the interior cabin is concerned, it combines what we saw in the concept and what Opel offers in other models from its lineup. There are new color and trim options available, along with a panorama windscreen that flows into a glass roof which will extend all the way to the back of the MPV.

The company’s proprietary Flex7 seating system has been updated for this third generation of the Zafira and it features three independent seats located in the middle row, seats that can be easily folded flat and move independently from each other, sliding longitudinally by up to 210 mm. Opel also offers a Lounge Seating system which allows you to fold down and rotate the back of the middle seat located in the second row in order to offer armrests to the passengers in the outer seats, something that we haven’t seen before in any MPV.

Opel says that its new Zafira Tourer can offer 710 liters load volume when in the 5-seat configuration, which is 65 liters more in comparison to the current model. If you decide to fold down the two rear rows, you’ll get 1,860 liters of space, 40 liters more than before.

The car rides on an entirely new platform that has a bigger wheelbase, measuring 2,760 mm, which is 57 mm more than the 2nd gen model. In addition the front & rear tracks measure 1,584 mm (+96 mm) and 1,588 (+78 mm), respectively.

The 2012 Opel Zafira will hit the European dealerships in the last part of this year and it will be available with three configurations of the company’s 2.0-liter CDTI engine: 110 hp, 130 hp and the more powerful 165 hp. Customers that prefer gasoline engine will be able to get the 1.4-liter ECOTEC turbocharged plant, available in two output variants: 120 hp and 140 hp. All of the engines will come as standard with Opel’s start & stop technology.

Later on, the German automaker will launch a more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly ecoFLEX model, along with Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) variants. More engines will also be available after the initial launch, including here an all-new gasoline power unit.

This doesn’t mean that the second generation of the Opel Zafira will be discontinued. The company said that they will still produce the model as a more affordable MPV alternative.
