Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR – Fourth Fastest Car On The ‘Ring

Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR

It was only a few weeks ago when Dodge brought its now defunct 2010 Viper SRT10 ACR to the Nurburgring where it managed to do a very fast lap. On August 31 the Japanese automaker Lexus took its LFA Nurburgring Edition and did a lap in 7:14.64 which at that time was the fourth fastest car on the ‘Ring, after the Radical SR8 LM that did a lap in 6:48, the Radical SR8 in 6:55 and the Gumpert Apollo Sport who managed to finish a lap in 7:11.57.

On September 14th Dodge decided to give it another try and they got two 2010 Viper ACR’s from the showroom floors of the Tomball Dodge team. Compared to the 2008MY which back in 2008 did its fastest lap in 7:22.10 (fifth fastest production car at that moment), the 2010MY had a shorter fifth gear ratio that improved high-speed acceleration as well as higher straightaway speeds, along with other modifications on the aero parts.

Behind the wheel of the 600-hp Viper SRT10 ACR was GT driver Dominik Farnbacher who did a lap of the ‘Ring in 7:12.13, which is more than 2 seconds quicker than the aforementioned Lexus LFA Nurburgring Edition, placing the Viper on the fourth position in the production car category.

The Italian automaker Fiat has formed a partnership with BCRF – Breast Cancer Research Foundation for creating a Pink Ribbon special edition of the 500 for the U.S. market. The car will be based on the 500 Lounge and it will be available in either Bianco (white) or Argento (silver), featuring a dark pink stripe with a light pink ribbon.

Fiat 500 Pink Ribbon Edition

As far as the interior cabin is concerned, not much to report as the changes are minor. It has seats wrapped around in black leather with pink contrasting stitching and bespoke floor mats.

Fiat 500 Pink Ribbon Edition

The base price for the Fiat 500 Pink Ribbon Edition starts from $22,500 and for every car sold Fiat will donate $1,000 to the BCRF. The automaker mentioned that they plan on rolling 250 units and they also will make a $50,000 minimum contribution if there won’t be enough buyers for this limited edition 500.

Homemade Motorcycle Sets Biodiesel World Speed Record

John Petsche is the name of the guy you see in this picture and he managed to combine various parts from motorcycles, industrial machinery, go-karts and generators, creating a motorcycle that runs on store-bought vegetable oil. If this isn’t impressive, the motorcycle has also won the world speed record for the 350 cc Alternate Fuel class.

It uses an industrial diesel power unit that “unleashes” 6 hp so the top speed of only 56 mph is understandable. Petsche doesn’t want to stop here and next year he plans on breaking the record by ditching the single-speed final drive unit as well as the centrifugal clutch, opting for a multi-speed gearbox. This homemade motorcycle is able to return 100 mpg of vegetable oil, according to its owner.

Myvi Wolfrace Design Concept Revealed

Myvi Wolfrace Design Concept

Perodua (ERusahaan Otomobil KeDUA Sendirian Berhad) is the second largest car maker in Malaysia after Proton, and they’ve teamed up with Wolfrace, a tuning company from the United Kingdom, to create this Myvi Wolfrace Design Concept that will spawn into a limited production model.

If you didn’t know, the second generation of the supermini Myvi is based on the Dahiatsu Boon/Sirion and the Toyota Passo. This concept brings a couple of styling changes, including 16-inch alloys that have low-profile Falken tires, contrasting red tailgate mirrors and spoiler, new graphics on the body, a twin chrome exhaust and tinted windows. In addition, it benefits from a lowered suspension that features Eibach springs which should increase the handling of the car.

Inside the cabin, Wolfrace used a combination of Alcantara and leather for the seats, along with a Vibe audio upgrade that includes bass enclosure.

The Malaysian manufacturer has announced that the car will go on sale in the United Kingdom at the beginning of next month. No word about the price tag yet.

MKB Squeezes V12 Engine In The Mercedes GL

Mercedes GL by MKB

This would have to be one of the most ridiculous tuning programs ever launched in the history of the automotive industry. The story goes this way: you buy a Mercedes GL, which we’re sure you know that it won’t be cheap, and after that you pay $294,030 to the guys from MKB to install a V12 engine! This engine conversion “is not easy” as it requires serious modifications to the four-wheel drive system, gearbox and the electronic control system, but even so the price tag is ridiculous.

Mercedes GL by MKB

With a V12 residing under the hood, the Mercedes GL is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 4.4 seconds, en route to an electronically limited top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h).

Mercedes GL by MKB

Not only the price tag is simply out of this world, but you will also have to wait 6 months for the engine transplant. Who would do this instead of buying an Aventador or another similar-priced supercar is purely insane…

U.S.-spec Kia Rio

The five-door version of the U.S.-spec Kia Rio was unveiled earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show along with its 4-door sedan sibling. The hatchback is going to have a starting price in the United States of $13,600, without taking into consideration the $750 destination & handling charge. For this money you’ll get the model fitted with the manual gearbox. If you don’t want to change gears, the automatic transmission model starts from $15,450 (including fees). The top-spec SX will set you back $18,750 (including fees).

The U.S.-spec Kia Rio is available in three trim levels: entry-level LX, mid-level EX and the aforementioned high-end SX. The cheapest one will have electric power steering, air conditioning, audio system with USB + SiriusXM satellite radio, ESC – Electronic Stability Control, HAC – Hill-start Assist Control, VSM – Vehicle Stability Management and ABS.

Regardless of the trim level, all the Rios get a 1.6-liter GDI 4-cylinder engine that produces 138 hp and manage to return 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. An optional feature for the Rio is the ISG start/stop technology that improves fuel economy in the city to 31 mpg while on the highway the figure remains the same.

First Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Sold At Auction For $250,000

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

At the Barrett-Jackson auction that was organized last week in Las Vegas, a lucky individual by the name of Rick Hendrick managed to place the winning bid for the car: $250,000. This is considerably pricier than the regular price tag of the Camaro ZL1 but the good news is that all of the proceeds will go to the YMCA of Southern Nevada. The car that was auctioned was wearing an exclusive Carbon Flash Metallic exterior and was built in order to celebrate the 1969 Camaro ZL1.

Under the hood of the ZL1 rests a supercharged V8 6.2-liter engine that develops 580 hp (588 PS / 432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft (754 Nm) of torque. Some of its features include a Performance Traction Management system, a Magnetic Ride Control system and an aggressive bodykit.

Porsche 911 (991) Will Have A Lifespan Of 14 Years

2012 Porsche 911

The sixth generation of the legendary Porsche 911 was officially unveiled a couple of weeks ago and we’ve learned that it will spawn a whole bunch of derivates. If we were to believe the guys from CAR, the next sibling will be the 911 Cabriolet which is set to debut this year.

Towards the end of 2012 we will see the AWD versions of the Carrera 4 and the Carrera 4S which will be available in coupe and cabrio configurations. The 911 Turbo is scheduled for a 2013 release and it will be motivated by a 520 hp (527 PS / 387 kW) engine. 2014 will be the year when the Cabrio Turbo version will be launched. But before that, in 2013 Porsche will roll out the 911 GT3, while at the end of 2014 the 911 Targa will go on sale, featuring a removable roof panel.

These are only just a few variants of the 911 (991), because the German automaker is also working on the GT2, the RS and others as well, along with some overpriced special editions. What’s even more interesting is that the current generation of the 911 will have a lifespan of 14 years.

Toyota Pixis Space Revealed

Toyota Pixis Space

If you love Lego, you’ll like this car. The Toyota Pixis Space is nothing more than a rebadged Daihatsu Move Conte and has a 2,490 mm wheelbase which should be enough for “plenty of room for four adults” while at the same time still being capable to provide “sufficient luggage space”. We don’t know the performance figures of this brick-shaped car, but we do know that it is motivated by a tiny 660cc engine.

Toyota Pixis Space

The power unit is mated to a continuously variable gearbox and it will be available in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged configurations. The base model will have front-wheel drive, while the more expensive variants will get 4WD as well as an eco-IDLE start/stop system which will allow the Pixis Space to return 60 mpg (3.9 liters / 100 km).

Nissan Super Juke In The Works

Nissan Super Juke

The European division of Nissan has confirmed that a hot version of the Juke is under development but it will only be a one-off model, not a production version. The highlight of this model will be the engine which Nissan will borrow from its GT-R model, which will make it into a super compact crossover.

Known within the company as the “Super Juke”, it will host a twin-turbo V6 3.8-liter engine that develops 520 hp (530 PS / 390 kW) and it should be able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in less than 4 seconds. Expect to see enlarged wheel arches, two-level rear wing, front splitter and a stripped-out interior cabin for shaving off weight.

Cars We Hate Part 13 – Nissan S-Cargo

Nissan S-Cargo

You probably haven’t heard anything about this car until now. Perhaps it is the ugliest model launched by Nissan. It came out in 1989 as a small retro-ish commercial van and looks pretty much like a snail.

Nissan S-Cargo

If you think that it resembles in some ways with the Citroen 2CV, yet another hideous car, you are right as the “designers” of the S-Cargo borrowed a few pictures of the 2CV when they came up with the design for this model. They even took the single-spoke design of the steering wheel from the 2CV, a car which was extremely popular in Japan in those days, for God knows why.

Nissan S-Cargo

Anyway, it made its official debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989 and the last one rolled out of Nissan’s factory in 1992. They made about 12,000 units, all of which were right-hand drive. It had a 4-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine linked to a three-speed automatic gearbox. Some of the optional features included an electric canvas roof and an oval portal window which was installed on each side of the panel.

Let’s just hope that none of the 12,000 cars are on the road today.

Top 10 Concepts At Frankfurt Motor Show

It was one of the best editions of the Frankfurt Motor Show ever, where aside from brand new production-version cars, we also so some cool and exciting concepts. Here are ten of the most interesting that were exhibited at the show:

VW NILS

Let’s start with something green and talk about the VW NILS, the automaker’s vision of a personal urban mobility for 2030. It features an aluminum spaceframe and has an F1-inspired one-seat configuration. This EV weighs only 460 kg and comes with an electric motor that produces 34 hp and 96 lb.-ft of torque, along with a 5.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. The car can be driven for up to 40 miles and charging the battery pack takes about two hours.

Kia GT

One of the most surprising concepts was the Kia GT, which will turn out into a production model in 2013. The one shown in Frankfurt was motivated by a V6 3.3-liter gasoline power unit that developed 390 hp and 394 lb.-ft. The engine is linked to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends the power to the back wheels.

Jaguar C-X16

Perhaps the most beautiful of them all, the Jaguar C-X16 is a rear-wheel drive two-seater coupe that packs a hybrid powertrain. Under that exquisite hood is a V6 3.0-liter engine that generates 375 hp and 332 lb.-ft, mated to an 8-speed transmission with an incorporated electric motor generator which draws its power from the 1.6 kWh battery, generating 95 PS and 173 lb.-ft. The concept needs 4.4 seconds to do the 0-62 mph sprint, en route to a top speed of 186 mph (300 km/h). On electric mode it can be driven for up to 50 miles (88 km) while the CO2 emissions are of 165 g/km.

Citroen Tubik

From beautiful we move to extremely odd – the Citroen Tubik is the modern version of the TUB and Type H light vans and offers enough room for nine passengers which sit on the three rows of seats. Inside it has a big semi-circular TV and high definition surround sound. The Tubik benefits from a four-wheel drive configuration and is motivated by PSA’s Hybrid4 technology consisting of a diesel engine located in the front and an electric motor at the back. The car rides on massive 22-inch wheels which are covered by low-resistance tires.

VW Beetle R

The new generation of the Beetle was launched a couple of months ago and VW has given us a glimpse on how the hot R version of the model will look like. Covered by a “serious grey” paint finish, the car has flared wheel arches along with revised front & rear bumpers. At the bag we find a big spoiler and dual-chrome tailpipes. The production version is expected to get the engine of the Golf R or the Scirocco R.

Rimac Concept_One

Another beautiful car revealed at Frankfurt comes from Croatia. The Rimac Concept_One comes with a lightweight carbon fiber body, an all-wheel drive system and carbon ceramic brakes. This one is also an electric vehicle and has a 92 kWh battery pack that powers the four electric motors that manage to generate a combined output of 1074 hp and 2802 lb.-ft. It weighs 3638 lb and is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 2.8 seconds, before reaching a maximum speed of 190 mph. With the batteries full, the car offers a range of up to 373 miles.

Opel RAK e

A very futurist concept is the Opel RAK e that was advertised as being a cheap urban commuter that can accommodate two people. It is a battery-operated car that features exposed wheels and benefits from a steel spaceframe structure that hides underneath synthetic material. The car weighs 837 lbs and is motivated by an electric motor that has a peak output of 49 hp while the continuous one is 14 hp. It is fed by the 5 kWh battery which needs about three hours for a full charge. Once fully charged, the car can be driven for up to 62 miles.

Audi Urban Concept

It seems that urban concepts were in trend this year at Frankfurt because Audi brought one too, which they simply called the Urban Concept. They unveiled both the coupe and spyder versions, featuring a carbon fiber monocoque and a curb weight of less than 500 kg. It is powered by a brushless electric motor that has 15 kWh which powers the rear wheels. It draws its necessary from the lithium-ion battery and offers a range of up to 37 miles. It should offer roughly the same performances as a supermini.

Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS

Mercedes-Benz revealed its Concept B-Class E-CELL PLUS, which is a plug-in hybrid that features an electric motor that offers 134 hp which is able to guarantee a continuous output of 94 hp. The traditional gasoline engine produces 67 hp while the gearbox has been developed especially for the concept. CO2 emissions stand at only 32 g/km and the range is estimated at 373 miles, while only on electric mode it can be driven for up to 62 miles.

Land Rover Defender DC100

We end with the very cool Land Rover Defender DC100 that is an interesting speedster-style open-top vehicle which features cut-down screens and a twin-humped fastback tonneau. It has been fitted with huge 22-inch alloy wheels and has a 3+3 seating configuration, which reminds us of the original Land Rovers. It has a 2.0-liter engine and is mated to an eight-speed gearbox. Needless to say, it has an all-wheel drive system, along with the latest generation of the Terrain Response system. On its roof we find solar panels. The production version is set to debut in 2015.

2012 Mitsubishi i Gets Pricier

2012 Mitsubishi i

Several days ago, the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi stated that its 2012 version of the “i” model will be more expensive because of “unforeseen changes in market conditions”. As a consequence, the car will have a base price of $29,985, including the $860 destination charge. This makes the car $1,135 more expensive than before, but still less than what the company estimated it would cost, which is between $35,000 and $40,000.

The 2012 Mitsubishi is considerably more affordable than two of its most important rivals, the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf. The Volt has a starting price of $39,995 while the Leaf will set you back at least $36,050. Both prices include the $850 destination charge. The car is scheduled to go on sale at first in California, Oregon, Hawaii and Washington in November this year. The company also mentioned that its petite EV is going to quality for a federal tax credit of $7,500.
