Upcoming Peugeot 208 Captured On Camera

Peugeot 208

The Peugeot 207 is getting older and will soon reach the end of its cycle so the French automaker is working hard on its successor, the 208 which will probably make its official debut in October. Until then, all we have is these spy shots of a 3-door 208 prototype that previews a production version that will hit the dealerships in mid 2012.

Rumors say that Peugeot will launch a hot 208 GTI version that will be powered by a 1.6-liter turbo engine which will develop 197 hp. Looking at these spy shots, we notice that the company has borrowed a few design cues from its 508 sedan, along with other styling ideas from the HR1 and the SR1 roadster.

Peugeot 208

We won’t have that annoying oversized nose in the new model as it will probably adopt a more elegant and sleek look, just like the one in the aforementioned SR1. According to company insiders, although the dimensions of the car will be smaller, the room inside the cabin will not be reduced at all, on the contrary, it might be even bigger than in the outgoing 207. In addition, the car will probably be 100 kg lighter than the model it will replace while the interior is going to be significantly better as far as the materials are concerned.

Peugeot 208

Aside from that 197 hp engine 1.6-liter engine, the new Peugeot 208 will be available with a 3-cylinder gasoline unit, a bunch of frugal diesels, while the stop/start system should be available for all of these engines. In the future, the 208 will probably get an SUV-inspired model as well as a hard-top cabrio.

Spy Shots – Audi Q3 S/RS

Audi Q3 S/RS

It seems that pretty soon the Ingolstadt-based automaker Audi will launch the S/RS version of its Q3 model. These spy shots were taken by the guys from Carscoop while the prototype was undergoing some testing on the Nurburgring (where else?) We already knew that Audi was working on this version since they’ve showed at a press event organized in Switzerland a Q3 prototype that was fitted with the 5-cylinder engine of the TT RS and the RS3 models.

Audi Q3 S/RS

These photos show us a rather standard Q3 that comes with the S-Line aerodynamic package. If you look closer, you’ll notice the big drilled brakes and Carscoop says that the prototype sounded just like a 5-cylinder power unit so this should be the fastest model in the Q3 lineup.

Audi Q3 S/RS

Most likely, the hottest version of the Q3 will be motivated by a de-tuned variant of the 2.5-liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine that should output approximately 300 hp (instead of the regular 340 hp). The power will probably be sent to all four wheels via the company’s famous quattro system and a dual-clutch 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox.

Audi Q3 S/RS

We’ll keep you posted if more info will be revealed about the upcoming Audi Q3 S / RS. Stay tuned.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Returns 40 MPG On The Highway

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

There is a common misconception among people that the smallest cars out there offer the best gas mileage. However, this isn’t entirely true as there are a bunch of compact cars that offer the same gas mileage or even better than their shorter and smaller siblings.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is one of the best cars in its segment as far as fuel consumption is concerned, being able to return 40 mpg on the highway. These are only estimations at the moment available for the model fitted with the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine mated to a 6-speed manual engine. In the city it should return 29 mpg while the probable combined EPA rating is 32 mpg.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The cheaper Sonics equipped with the 1.8-liter power unit will return 25 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg combined, with the 6-speed manual gearbox. Choosing the 5-speed manual transmission offers 26 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg in the combined cycle.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The new Sonic manages to offer the same highway gas mileage figures as the 2011 Ford Fiesta SFE or the Hyundai Elantra.

1:8 Scale Aventador Costs More Than 12x Than The Real Thing!

Lamborghini Aventador (1:8 Scale Model)

Forget what you know about overpriced cars and products in general; this one takes the number one spot without any efforts whatsoever. The all-new Lamborghini Aventador LP-700 carries a price tag of $379,000, but the miniature you see in this photo and video costs a whopping $4.83 million! If our math is correct, the 1:8 scale model is at least 12x more expensive than the real thing.

Why so expensive? Well, the German model maker Robert Gulpen used very precious materials while building the model. One relevant example would have to be a 1/1000 mm thin thread of solid gold around the carbon fiber parts of the car’s body. The wheels as well as the whole interior cabin have been cast from platinum and solid gold.

That “Lamborghini” logo that adorns the bulletproof glass showcase background is made out of platinum, gold and expensive gems. Gulpen mentioned that all of the materials used for creating this 1:8 scale model of the Aventador cost approximately $2.8 million. He added that 500 hours were necessary for creating this masterpiece.

On his website, the German model maker wrote that the miniature will go up for auction at either Sotherby’s or Chrystie’s in New York or Dubai. Starting price? $4.83 million, while $690,000 will go to charity, that is if the 1:8 scale model will find its filthy rich (and insane, we might add) owner.

BMW 135i And 335i Get Power Boost

The North American division of BMW has some good news for those of you who were thinking of buying the 135i Coupe or the 335i. They’ve developed two performance packages for these two cars which can also be retrofitted at the company’s centers.

The first one is also available for the awful-looking X6, the units rolled out until April last year. It consists of an engine software optimization which lifts the power by 20 hp to a grand total of 320 hp, while the peak torque is 332 lb.-ft, up from the standard 300 lb.-ft. These torque figures are available for the model fitted with an automatic gearbox, while the one with the manual or a DCT has a peak torque of 317 lb.-ft.

With this kit, the German automaker says that the 335i is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint 0.2 quicker than the regular model and it is also 0.5 faster from 50 mph to 75 mph.

The other kit features an ECU upgrade as well as an auxiliary water cooler plus an enhanced radiator fan in order to diminish the higher thermal stresses on the power unit when you’re pushing the car to the limits.

Until the end of this year, BMW will be offering a special introductory price for these power kits. The first one costs $599 while the other one carries a price tag of $1,199. These figures do not include the installation costs so prepare to pay more.

Frankfurt Motor Show – Smart ForVision

Smart ForVision

Last week at the Frankfurt Motor Show the German automaker Smart showed us how one of their models could look in the future by revealing the cool ForVision concept. They collaborated with BASF for this vehicle which can be considered the pinnacle of advanced technology and a lightweight design.

Smart ForVision

It doesn’t have a regular roof like we have on our cars, instead it that one features transparent organic solar cells that are capable of generating enough power in order “to power the multimedia components” even in low lighting conditions. These cells also feature organic light-emitting diodes that provide light inside the cabin if one of the doors is opened.

Smart ForVision

In addition, the wheels are also special as they are made out of plastic and have a curb weight of only 6.6 pounds (3 kg). Other than that, the Smart ForVision has carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin doors, infrared-reflecting film on the windows to keep the cabin nice and cool even when exposed to direct sunlight, along with plastic seats that have lightweight cushions and built-in heating and cooling elements.

No word about what’s under the hood but most likely it has the same powertrain as the ForTwo Electric Drive model.

VW Aiming For Number One Spot, Plans On Investing 62.4 Billion Euros

VW Phaeton

We have big news coming from the Volkswagen AG as they announced that their plans are to invest 62.4 billion Euros in the next five years in order to reach its bold objective of becoming the biggest car maker in the entire world by sales volume by 2018.

This massive investment was approved by VW’s supervisory board last Friday and the money will be heading to improving the factories as well as developing cars and building new production plans. Moreover, VW’s joint-venture firms in China will inject another 14 billion Euros. If you didn’t know, Volkswagen’s biggest market at the moment is in China so this decision isn’t really a big surprise.

The company’s plans are to boost sales to all its brands in the portfolio: Audi, Bugatti, Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat and of course, Volkswagen. They also own a controlling interest in two of the world’s biggest truckmakers: Scania and MAN.

Last year, the VW Group managed to deliver 7.2 million units and this year they’ll probably sell more than that. By 2018, VW hopes to sell 10 million cars per year and overtake General Motors and Toyota.
