DeLorean DMC-12 From Back To The Future 3, Set To Go On Auction

DeLorean DMC-12

Those of you who are fans of the Back to the Future movies and have deep pockets will have the chance to grab a piece of movie history when the car from the third part of the series will go on auction. The car we’re talking about is one of the seven original DeLorean DMC-12 cars that were driven by Michael J. Fox during the film. Today, only three of these cars exist so you can imagine how precious it is.

The car which will go on the auction organized by Profiles in History has been in private hands for 8 years and features a full roll cage, new suspension and a V6 engine borrowed from VW. The organizers say that this DeLorean DMC-12 will fetch anywhere from at least $400,000 to $600,000. The car was used for the 1955 drive-in movie scene where Marty McFly raced back to 1985 in order to find Dr. Emmet “Doc” Brown, a character played by Christopher Lloyd.

At this auction, aside from the car there will be other artifacts that will be auctioned, including Doc’s burned toy Caddy, the Tales From Space comic, costumes, Clock Tower cables as well as a full set of five types of hoverboards. Some of the money obtained from this auction will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease. This auction will be organized on December 15-17.

Crash & Burn For V8 Supercar

What you are about to see is a driver by the name of David Besnard who barely escaped the bursting flames coming from his crashed V8 Supercar. The driver lost the control of his car while he was doing more than 143 mph (230 km/h) due to brake failure on the 112th lap of the 1000 kilometer race that was organized on the second weekend of this month in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia.

The car hit the wall rear end first which lead to the rupture of the fuel cell. The fuel that was spilled on the track ignited and the driver unstrapped himself and managed to walk away from the car. Who knows what might have happened if those acting marshals haven’t been on the scene right away.

Peugeot 308 Sedan

After it debuted at the middle of September during the Chengdu Motor Show, the new Peugeot 308 Sedan is now available on the Chinese market and it is the company’s third model in the last eighteen months which has been developed for China, after the 307 and 308 sedans.

Peugeot 308 Sedan

The car is produced locally with the automaker’s partner Dongfeng Motor Corporation and it is available with a choice of two power units. The first one is a 1.6-liter engine that develops 106 hp and has a peak torque of 142 Nm, while the other one is a beefier 2.0-liter that churns 147 hp and a maximum torque of 200 Nm. Both of these engines can be mated to either a manual or an automatic gearbox.

16 People Squeezed In The VW Up!

VW Up!

There is a common trend among automakers that launch small city cars to try and prove that these vehicles are very spacious. The latest example comes from Volkswagen who took 16 of its employees and stuffed them inside the recently introduced Up! model. Two of them were in the trunk, another one on the dash, seven of them on the back seat, two in the footwells under the dash and four on the front seats. What they did is pretty impressive since the VW Up! measures only 3.54 meters long and it’s 1.64 meters wide.

VW Up!

Other recent attempts we should mention include the one from last year when 20 students were stuffed in an original VW Beetle. Another example is from 2001 when not more than 27 students from Penn State Abington got inside a New Beetle.

VW Up!

Although this isn’t an original idea since car cramming started back in the 50s, this still remains a pretty efficient marketing idea that VW has implemented for the Up! which will go on sale in Germany on December 2nd.

Lamborghini Countach Dragster Goes Pinball

If the guys who made the Mad Max movies would decide to make a new one, this is the car that Mel Gibson should be driving. Anyway, this dragster can do the quarter mile in six seconds but as you can see for yourselves, it’s rather difficult to control it as apparently it likes pinball more than it should.

Spy Shots – Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

We’ve been wondering when Mercedes-Benz will launch the ultimate version of its SLS AMG. Apparently we don’t have to wait much longer for the Black Series version of the car because a prototype was spied by the guys from Autocar on the Nurburgring track. The car is scheduled to go on sale in 2013 and it should cost 50% more than the regular coupe which is available for 168,395 pounds in the UK so you’d better start saving money right away.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

According to Autocar, the German automaker decided to make the Black Series version of the SLS back in 2006 when the development of the AMG variant begun. When it will come out it will have a rather dramatic bodykit, featuring a big fixed rear wing, a rear diffuser, front splitter and more cooling on the hood, along with a wider track. We’ve already seen a similar bodykit on the SLS GT3 racer that was exhibited last year during the New York motor show.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

Company insiders have revealed that the V8 6.2-liter engine of the SLS AMG will be able to develop around 600 hp and a peak torque of 500 lb.-ft. when the Black Series version will be launched. Some of the tweaks that will be implemented in the ultimate SLS will be a higher compression ratio, a larger air manifold, along with reprofiled camshafts. Also included will be a mechanical locking differential, while the engine will be linked to a dual-clutch, 7-speed gearbox in order to handle the additional torque.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

Aside from the bodykit and the mechanical improvements, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series will lose 50kg and it will have an improved aerodynamic package, which should be enough for a 0-62 mph sprint time in only 3.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 208 mph. The regular SLS needs 3.8 seconds to hit 62 mph while its top speed is of “only” 197 mph.

Lancia Thema Arrives In Europe

Lancia Thema

Earlier this week, the Italian automaker Lancia has announced that its Thema model is now available in Europe. This would have to be the company’s first full-size sedan model after 2009 when they discontinued the Thesis. As you probably already know this by know, this is nothing more than a Chrysler 300 that has Lancia badges.

Lancia Thema

The Fiat Group plans on selling between 10,000 and 15,000 units of the model in Europe and the Chrysler 300 in Ireland and United Kingdom every year. The car measures five meters and has a RWD configuration, while customers will be able to choose from one of the three available engines.

Lancia Thema

The first one is a Euro 5-compliant V6 3.0-liter diesel engine which is available in two states of tune and it’s built by VM Motori and developed with Fiat Powertrain. Both of the configurations of this engine are mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Lancia Thema

The entry-level variant of this power unit is an oil-burner that develops 190 hp @ 4,000 rpm and a peak torque of 440 Nm available between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm. With this engine, the Lancia Thema is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 9.7 seconds. The beefier unit churns 239 hp and a peak torque of 550 Nm (1,800 – 2,800 rpm), enough for a 0-62 mph sprint time in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h). Both diesels are able to return 33.2 mpg (7.1 liters / 100 km).

Lancia Thema

The most powerful engine will be the V6 3.6-liter Pentastar unit borrowed from Chrysler which is capable of generating 286 hp (210 kW) at 6,350 rpm and a maximum torque of 340 Nm available at 4,650 rpm. Mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, the Thema is able to reach 62 mph from start in 7.7 seconds, en route to a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). With this engine the car manages to return 25 mpg (9.4 liters / 100 km) while the CO2 emissions stand at 219 g/km so it’s not very eco-friendly.

1969 Holden Hurricane Brought Back To Life

1969 Holden Hurricane

Pop quiz: which is the first concept car ever made by Holden? The answer would be this cool 1969 Hurricane which was also known as the RD001. The General Motors-owned Australian automaker launched the concept at the 1969 Melbourne Motor Show and it had an experimental V8 4.2-liter engine that was able to develop 258 hp (262 PS / 193 kW). The most interesting thing about it was its cabin which was accessed by a canopy top that was hydraulically operated and it opened over the front wheels.

1969 Holden Hurricane

Aside from this and the great looks, the Holden Hurricane had a few tech goodies that made it into a production model only decades later. Some of these features include a rear-view camera as well as an automated route finder named Pathfinder which used magnets embedded along roadways for guiding the driver. It can be considered as being the precursor of today’s satellite navigation systems (GPS).

A group of engineers and designers from Holden have restored the concept to its original luster and it will be exhibited this weekend at the Motorclassica auto show which will be organized in the Melbourne Royal Exhibition Building.

Spiderman’s Toby Maguire Refuses A Mercedes

2011 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

How many people in the world would refuse a brand new Mercedes-Benz as a gift? Not many we’re sure. One of these exceptions is the actor Toby Maguire who refused this generous gift due to the fact that the car had leather seats.

If we were to believe recent local reports, he returned the car while he was in Australia working on his next movie, the Great Gatsby. Known for his role in the Spiderman franchise, Toby became a vegan back in 2009 and he also adopted an anti-animal cruelty policy so he can’t drive cars that have seats which are wrapped around in leather.

However, since the cow was already dead… why not get the car? I would.

Vettel’s Infiniti FX Goes Into Limited Production

Infiniti FX50 S Vettel

Last month during the Frankfurt Motor Show, Infiniti brought a one-off FX Vettel concept that had aerodynamic and engineering updates which were tailored by the double F1 champion who was directly involved in the development of the SUV. Even though at that moment they’ve said that this will remain a concept, apparently the folks at Infiniti have changed their mind and this car will go into a limited production.

Infiniti FX50 S Vettel

This is only the first model that will be launched as a result of the collaboration between Infiniti and Vettel, who is the company’s ambassador and double world Formula 1 champion for Red Bull Racing. Andy Palmer who is the automaker’s boss described this newly established relationship similar to the one between Mercedes-Benz and AMG or the one between BMW and the M division.

Infiniti FX50 S Vettel

This Vettel edition of the FX50 S comes with a new design for the front grille, LED daytime running lights, a carbon fiber spoiler which has been modeled on the front wing of a F1 car, a rear spoiler, along with carbon fiber sills and wing mirrors.

Infiniti FX50 S Vettel

At the heart of this SUV is a modified V8 5.0-liter engine that churns 414 hp and is able to hit 186 mph (300 km/h) thanks to the fact that the limiter has been removed and it has more horsepower under its hood.

Infiniti FX50 S Vettel

Palmer added that since the FX50 S Premium costs 58,250 pounds, this limited-run Vettel edition might have “a price tag of up to 75,000 pounds.”

Illegal Drifting Site Raided By Saudi Police

Remember that video we’ve shown you about three weeks ago where some “enthusiasts” were having a drifting session on the public streets of Saudi Arabia? Well, it seems that the local authorities have recently set up a sting operation to catch those dangerous drivers. In the middle of the drifting run we see a Honda Accord that loses control and crashes into a road side object which renders the vehicle immobile.

This crash triggers the raid as a lot of police vehicles come and try to catch everyone in that area. Obviously, the entire scene turns into chaos as the people there try to escape in all directions. We don’t know if the police managed to take anyone into custody but we do hear some gun shots in the process. We can also see that the people inside the Honda Accord were being helped out but no information regarding the final outcome of this event.
