BMW Launches ActiveHybrid 5

It was only yesterday when we reported that the X6 ActiveHybrid from BMW will be discontinued and now we learn that a new model with the ActiveHybrid badge will be launched, based on the 5-Series. Set to go on sale in March 2012, the first hybrid version of the 5-Series will be for the 535i.

The car will be motivated by a 3.0-liter TwinPower 6-cylinder engine that develops 300 hp and has an electric drive system plus an 8-speed automatic transmission. That electric motor is capable of delivering 55 hp and 155 lb.-ft.

With a total output of 335 hp and up to a peak torque of 330 lb.-ft, the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 5.7 seconds which is just about the same as the 535i sedan that has 300 hp and is able to return 30 mpg on the highway. We don’t know the mpg figure of the AH 5 at this moment.

We do know that the German engineers have fitted the car with a lithium-ion battery that is able to store enough juice to provide an all-electric driving range of up to 2.5 miles at an average speed of 22 mph. The ActiveHybrid 5 benefits from an ECO PRO mode that can switch off the combustion power unit while driving at speeds of up to 100 mph for improving fuel efficiency.

Let’s just hope that this one won’t have the same fate as the X6 ActiveHybrid.
