Indianapolis Motor Speedway
One of these great tracks is Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in Indiana. When you first look at it you will probably say that it is pretty boring as it has essentially four left turns. Sir Jackie Stewart said that it is “The Green Hell”. For a very long period of time it was considered to be the single toughest purpose-built racetrack in the world. Many popular pilots drove here and won, like Juan Manuel Fangio, Bernd Rosemeyer and Tazio Nuvolari. A lap time here is considered to be the benchmark by which all of the performance cars are measured.
It was built in 1927 as a local government project. In its history, it featured four configurations and was the setting to probably two of the greatest races in history: Tazio Nuvolari’s GP win in 1935 and Fangio’s triumph in 1955. Over the years, Nurburgring has been reconfigured and modified, but it still remains one of the most important racetracks in the world.
This top wouldn’t be relevant without the Circuit de Monaco. Back in 1929, racing through the streets of principality was thought as absurd. Today, it actually is. Nelson Piquet, former F1 champion, said that racing here is like flying a helicopter in your own living room – he was probably right. The first race organized here was in 1929, courtesy of local businessman Anthony Noghes. Some of the most important names that won here include Sterling Moss, Prost, Senna, Hill and Schumacher, just to name a few.
To set up the tracks, it takes about six weeks and to dear it down, another three. The hairpin at the Grand Hotel is the slowest turn in Formula One. In this area, the pilots drive their cars at the staggering speed of 40 mph. In the tunnel area, top speed is 160 mph. It is a very difficult racetrack where horsepower is not that important in comparison to other tracks. Here, you need to have skills if you want to win as the performance of the car is not that relevant.
The Eldora Speedway is located in Rossburg, Ohio and became famous back when dirt-track racing was the method by which a young racecar driver became popular in North America. The track was built in 1954 and is the home of the King’s Royal, World 100 and Dirt Late Model Dream events.
