2012 Chevrolet Sonic Gets Price List

2012 Chevrolet Sonic (hatchback)

I have to say that the hatchback version of the recently announced Chevrolet Sonic looks great as opposed to the sedan version which looks a little bit cheap out in the back. Anyway, with the launch of the new model, Chevrolet is reentering the subcompact segment after a pause of several years. The cheapest Sonic money can be will cost you $14,995 for the sedan version and $400 more if you want the hatchback.

For this money, you get the model powered by an Ecotec 1.8-liter engine, featuring 10 airbags, traction control, ABS, electronic stability control (StabiliTrak) with rollover sensing and a 6-month trial of OnStar.

Moving up the scale, we find the LT trim level that packs a few luxury features like the heated side mirrors and seats, 6-speaker sound system, audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, USB, Bluetooth and 17-inch alloys. The top-spec LTZ comes with remote start for the models fitted with an automatic gearbox, chrome accented exterior and perforated leatherette steering.

That 1.8-liter engine is good for 138 hp and has a peak torque of 125 lb.-ft, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, which can be upgraded to a 6-speed automatic gearbox if you are willing to pay $1,070.

Those who choose the LT or LTZ trim level can opt for a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine with a 6-speed manual transmission which will cost you $700 more.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic will have to face up some serious competition coming from the Nissan Sentra, which is a little bit more expensive as its base price is $16,060, but it comes with a more powerful 2.0-liter engine that produces 140 hp. Another rival is the popular Hyundai Accent, a model that comes with a 1.6-liter GDI 4-cylinder engine that packs 138 hp, which will set you back only $12,445 for the base version.

As far as the hatchback is concerned, it will run up against the popular Ford Fiesta (priced from $15,500), the Honda Fit ($15,100) and the Toyota Yaris which has a base price of $13,115.

GM Presents 2012 Chevrolet Impala Police Car

2012 Chevrolet Impala Police Car

General Motors has decided to reveal the police version of its 2012MY Chevrolet Impala before detailing all the facts about the retail model, which will go on sale this June.

Probably the most important change over the older model would have to be the direct-injection V6 3.6-liter engine, mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. This power unit is capable of producing 302 hp and enables the car to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 6.6 seconds.

The 2011 Impala police car has a V6 3.9-liter engine that produces 230 hp, linked to a 4-speed gearbox. Although the new engine is more powerful, it manages to provide better fuel efficiency as General Motors said that it will return 17 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, which is 3 mpg than before and 28% better than the Ford Crown Victoria which will soon be retired.

The 2012MY Chevrolet Impala also benefits from GM’s electronic stability control, dubbed StabilTrak. They’ve also fitted the car with a better braking system, allowing the Impala to stop from 60 mph in 132 feet. In addition, the suspension and steering have been tuned in order to improve handling and reduce body roll.

We’ll have more information about the retail version in the following weeks. Stay tuned.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze

2011 brought a whole lot of new cars from Chevrolet. The guys from General Motors decided that Chevrolet needs to step up its game and invested a bit more in Chevrolet cars and the results did not fail to come up. The small car section and the sedan section are becoming Chevrolet strengths as well. Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic would better watch out, cause there is a new player in town and it’s there to stay: Chevrolet Cruze.

The muscle car section until now has been the reigned by the Ford Mustang, but the 2011 Chevy Camaro gave the Mustang a run for more money than Ford had, overthrowing him. I won’t even mention the improvements suffered by the greatest American performance sports car: Chevrolet Corvette.

TheCarConnection.com reviewed Chevy by styling, performance, quality, safety, features, and green (eco). Let’s see where Chevrolet stands for 2011.

Ok let’s start with the newly born 2011 Chevrolet Cruze that comes as a replacement for the Cobalt. It may not give you feet that burning sensation as if you can’t wait to jump in, but it carefully combines a refined riding quality with an elegant and ease-of-access interior that doesn’t have any wasted space. Talking styling, the Cruze is a bit too conservative on the outside, but it surely makes up for it if you look at it from the inside. The contemporary luxurious look will leave your mouth open. As a performance car it may not be exceedingly fast or fun to drive, but it has outstanding fuel economy which completely makes up for it. Quality and safety are its best assets, since like we’ve stated earlier, the interior is literally “do die for” which the safety systems will prevent at all costs, getting top results in every crash test, and surpassing expectation in every safety test drive.

Let’s kick it with some real muscle with the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro. This is a genuine head turner with blistering power and performance especially the SS trim that literally rocks the car off its body. The only problem is that it’s ONLY a muscle car, completely absent in practicality and comfort. The style of the Camaro may not appeal to everyone but surely they will check out the retro influenced exterior as it blasts by. As for any muscle car, the performance department is where it all counts. Here the Camaro excels with blistering performance coming from strong roaring engines, a high performance steering, handling and the brakes to match them. Quality is bit poorer because of its absent practicality. If you get a Camaro, just hope that you’re not too tall or you won’t drive around more than one passenger because if you do the passengers in the back won’t be happy with the settlement. Safety ratings on the other hand are really high. It’s equipped to protect the drivers from any unexpected events and keep the back seat occupants out of trouble.

Although the base level comes kind of… empty on the inside, the features tend to grow considerably with the trim advancement, finally becoming a potential tech-savvy muscle. Since muscle and green cars don’t exactly match, you won’t find too much eco friendly features in the Camaro.

And finally the 2011 Corvette that needs no other presentation besides the outstanding ratings it got in every department. Styling, let’s be serious who wouldn’t want to even set near a Corvette, not to mention in it? Performance put simple: it’s the ultimate American super car. Quality and safety: even Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 3 places it on top.

NHTSA Gives 5 Stars To The Chevrolet Volt

2011 Chevrolet Volt in IIHS crash test

It was only a couple of weeks ago when the Chevrolet Volt got top ratings for crash safety and now the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave five stars to the car for overall vehicle safety. For those of you that don’t know, five stars is the maximum rating available.

To be more exact, the Volt earned five stars for side crash and rollover tests and four shiny stars for frontal collisions. NHTSA said the Chevrolet Volt comes as standard with electronic stability control, but it isn’t available with forward-collision warning or lane-departure. The agency increased the severity of the tests for the 2011MY cars due to the reason that lot of new models managed to do very well with the previous test regime.

These new modifications include the side-impact test that simulate a crash going on at 20 mph in a tree or a pole behind the windshield pillar on the driver’s side.

No word about NHTSA’s tests with the Nissan Leaf. We’ll keep you posted.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro To Get V6 3.6-liter Engine

2012 Chevrolet Camaro V6 Engine

The upcoming 2012 Chevrolet Camaro will be available with a brand new V6 3.6-liter engine. This LFX power unit has been developed in order to be more powerful and fuel efficient, adopting an integrated exhaust manifold, reducing the possibility of a gasket failure while at the same time reducing the weight of the engine by 13 lbs (6 kg).

This new V6 engine develops 323 hp (327 PS / 241 kW), which is 11 hp (11 PS / 8 kW) more in comparison to the previous power unit. Although it gets a boost in power, the V6-powered Camaro has an EPA-estimated 30 mpg highway rating.

GM Will Increase The Production Of Its 2012MY Chevrolet Volt

2011 Chevrolet Volt

Good news for those of you who are still waiting to buy a Chevrolet Volt as General Motors has announced that for the 2012 model, the Volt (along with the Opel Ampera) will be produced in 60,000 units and approximately 45,000 of them will be sold in the United States. In addition, GM will increase the production of this year’s model by 16,000 units.

The bad thing is that this production increase will not commence right away due to the reason that General Motors has shut down its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, where they assemble the Volt, so that it could be upgraded in order to prepare the factory for building the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.

You probably know that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is not available everywhere in the U.S. The states in which you can purchase one are: New York, California, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., Connecticut, Michigan, Maryland and New Jersey. The company has said that by the end of this year, the Volt will be available nationwide in the U.S., as well as in Canada, Europe and of course, China.

Revolution Styling Chevrolet Camaro Spyder

Most of the tuning programs available for the sexy Chevrolet Camaro are for the coupe version, but the guys over at Revolution Styling took the convertible model and here is the end result. Top 10 Cheapest Cars Of This Year

If you live in North America and you are in the market for a very cheap car, here are the least expensive models that you can buy this year. All the prices are MSRP + destination charge:

01. Hyundai Accent GL – Starting From $10,705

Hyundai Accent GL

A little bit more expensive than the previous generation, but still the most affordable car you can buy, the Accent GL (formerly known as the Accent GS Base and Accent Blue) is what you would call a standard car. For the base model, you can forget about the AC system (another $1,000), power windows, automatic gearbox, radio, etc. If you want all of these, prepare to pay $13,415 for the Accent GS, but in this price range, you’ll find better cars. The Accent GL features a 110-hp engine and power steering. You need to know that in crash tests, it didn’t score so well and the safety equipment is quite limited.

02. Nissan Versa 1.6 – Starting From $10,740

Nissan Versa 1.6

If the Accent isn’t your cup of tea, maybe this Nissan Versa will do the trick. You get two more doors, more space inside the cabin and better resale value. The 2011MY comes as standard with door locks and power windows, but you don’t get a stereo or many options for the paintwork: only black, silver and blue. If you add AC, automatic gearbox and antilock brakes, the price tag jumps to less than $13,000. For $15,780, you can get the Versa 1.8 that comes with AC, stereo, cruise control and ESP.

03. Chevrolet Aveo LS Sedan – Starting From $12,685

Chevrolet Aveo LS Sedan

For the entry-level Aveo you’ll get AM/FM radio with MP3 player input jack, OnStar and AC. There are lots of colors to choose from and for $200 more, you can get the hatchback model. On the down side, the Aveo is not a very good car to drive, lacks safety equipment and if you add power windows and a CD player, the price jumps past the $15,000 mark and for that money, there are lots of cars to choose from.

04. Kia Rio Base Sedan – Starting From $12,990

Kia Rio Base Sedan

Just like the aforementioned Hyundai Accent GL and the Nissan Versa 1.6, it comes with a very short list of standard equipment. The engine is quite eager but the car’s non-power-assisted steering feels awful in the curves and you’ll have to work a lot while parking the car. The more expensive Rio LX ($15,690) comes with AC, ABS and a CD player. It does look better than the Accent and the Versa though, but not a very good car to drive.

05. Smart ForTwo Pure – Starting From $13,240

Smart ForTwo Pure

No AC, no power windows or mirrors, not even a stereo for the cheapest ForTwo. You do get automatic gearbox, ABS, ESC and side airbags. If you want the comfort features, prepare to pay another $2,000 for the ForTwo Passion.

06. Toyota Yaris 3-door Liftback – Starting From $13,615

Toyota Yaris 3-door Liftback

It offers a pretty good standard package that includes AC, ABS, ESP, along with an $800 optional automatic transmission. For $300 more, the 5-door version of the Yaris can be yours. It looks really good, it is easy to drive and thanks to its small size, you can squeeze it into small parking spaces.

07. Kia Soul Base – Starting From $13,995

Kia Soul Base

If you are in the market for a funky mini-wagon, the Kia Soul Base might be the solution for you. You’ll get as standard: power windows and locks, ABS, ESP and CD stereo with USB. You can choose from only three colors: black, white and silver. Under the hood there is a 1.6-liter engine that produces 122 hp and it can be mated only to a manual transmission. The car is pretty comfortable, safe and practical.

08. Ford Fiesta S Sedan – Starting From $13,995

Ford Fiesta S Sedan

Same price as the Kia Soul Base, and the latest model in this top. You get four doors, a pretty capable 120-hp engine, ESP, power steering, AM/FM + auxiliary input jack. The Fiesta is known as one of those cars that are very fun to drive and this S Sedan version is no exception. We recommend paying extra for the 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

09. Suzuki SX4 Sedan – Starting From $14,244

Suzuki SX4 Sedan

The entry-level SX4 Sedan is a pretty basic car as you don’t get an automatic gearbox, AC, stereo and the only color available is white. However, you do get ABS, power windows and locks and a pretty potent 2.0-liter engine that cranks out 150 hp. It features a pretty big back seat and is very fun to drive. The styling is also quite nice.

10. Nissan Cube 1.8 – Starting From $14,740

Nissan Cube 1.8

The Nissan Cube 1.8 comes with a lot of standard equipment: AC, CD player, ABS, ESP and power windows and locks. The design is pretty cool and you get a lot of space inside the cabin. While some of you will like its cutting-edge style, others will disapprove.

Outside of this top 10 we find the Mazda2 Sport, with an entry-level model that will set you back $14,795; Hyundai Elantra GLS ($15,625); Kia Forte LX ($15,690); Scion xD ($15,765); the Mitsubishi Lancer DE ($15,755); Honda Fit ($15,850); Mazda 3i SV ($16,595); Nissan Sentra 2.0 ($16,270); Honda Civic DX Coupe ($16,355) and the Volkswagen Jetta S ($16,765).

As you can see, there are a lot of cars to choose from if you are looking for something very affordable that will get you from point A to point B. If we were to choose a car from this top 10, it would have to be the recently introduced Ford Fiesta S Sedan as it offers plenty of standard equipment and it looks pretty good. Plus, it probably is the most fun to drive car in this price range.

General Motors Recalls 2011MY U.S.-spec Cruze Models

2011 Chevrolet Cruze

A few weeks ago General Motors issued a recall concerning certain 2011MY Chevrolet Cruze units due to potential problems with the steering wheel that might come loose from the steering column. This recall affects 2,100 units.

Now, GM has announced yet another recall, involving 154,112 units of its 2011MY Cruze, the ones built in North America starting with last summer. The reason behind this decision is also related to a steering issue, and General Motors said that they want to check the car’s steering shaft to see if it was properly installed. GM did not say whether these two recalls are related in any way, but they’ve did stated that in this latest action they want to check another potential problem that might concern about 120,000 units fitted with an automatic gearbox.

The good news is that no accidents have been reported due to these issues.
