Jeep Plans On Doubling Lineup By 2014

It seems that the guys from Jeep have big plans for the next three years as they want to double the number of models. They want to cover all the major SUV segments by the year 2014 with new cars like an entry-level model, a sole replacement for the Patriot and the Compass, a replacement for the Liberty/Cherokee, an updated Wrangler, a new Grand Cherokee and a flagship model that will be known as the Grand Wagoneer and will be based on the Grand Cherokee.

With the introduction of these new and revised models, Jeep wants to increase its annual sales in Europe to 125,000, which is 8x more than 2010’s figure of just 15,000 cars. According to the early projections for this year, Jeep will manage to see 22,500 units.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Heading To Europe

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (European Version)

The European debut of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is scheduled for this month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. This hardcore SUV is motivated by a new V8 6.4-liter HEMI engine that produces 464 hp and a peak torque of 465 lb.-ft, which is 49 hp and 45 lb.-ft more than the outgoing 6.1-liter power unit.

Featuring such a powerful engine under its hood, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it can do the 0-62 mph sprint in only 4.8 seconds, en route to a maximum speed of 158 mph. Although it has more power, the car manages to drink 13% less fuel than the older model.

Aside from the extra oomph, the SRT8 version of the Grand Cherokee benefits from a 146% improved torsional stiffness and features the company’s new Selec-Track suspension management which promises to make this model the “best handling Jeep ever.”

Braking power is provided by the high-performance brakes from Brembo that have 6-piston calipers for the front wheels and 4-piston calipers for the rear wheels. To stop the car from 62 mph, it needs only 35 meters, which is just about the same as the McLaren MP4-12C.

The car will be brought closer to the ground by 30 mm and will have a new body-colored front grille that has a bespoke black screen background as well as chrome bezel inserts in order to emphasize the masculine look. Other styling changes include a brand new sculpted hood, a gloss black lower front grille, a dual-exhaust system and also a rear spoiler.

Inside the cabin, the European version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes with a race-inspired cockpit that has sculpted Nappa leather and suede seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a bunch of carbon fiber accents for the door trim panels and the instrument cluster.

2012 Jeep Wrangler Gets Pentastar V6 3.6-liter Engine

2012 Jeep Wrangler

I’ve always been a big fan of the Jeep Wrangler and I considered it one of the most important cars ever launched in the United States. The Chrysler Group announced a few days ago that the 2012 model year is going to be available with a new and more powerful Pentastar V6 3.6-liter engine which will be linked to a 5-speed automatic gearbox.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

This new power unit generates 285 hp (209 kW) and has a peak torque of 260 lb.-ft (353 Nm), which is 83 hp and 23 lb.-ft more than the outgoing V6 3.8-liter that produces 202 hp and 237 lb.-ft of torque.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

Along with the aforementioned 5-speed automatic transmission (which replaces the old 4-speed auto), the car is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 8.4 seconds and manages to return up to 21 mpg whereas the old one returned 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg highway so the 2012MY is more frugal.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

The automaker also said something about the first gear ratio which is now lower than before, giving the automatic transmission more off-road capabilities via a lower overall crawl ratio. Clients can also choose for an optional 6-speed manual gearbox.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

The 2-door Wrangler as well as the 4-door Wrangler Unlimited will be available for the 2012MY in four flavors: Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon will have the same body-color hardtop as the Sahara models.

2012 Jeep Wrangler

They didn’t say anything about the date when the cars will be launched and no word about the price tag either.

Top five safest cars

In a world obsessed with fast cars and adrenaline rushes, safety is often left at the side of the road. But, as we all know, safety on the road is absolutely paramount and, inevitably, car companies have endeavored to manufacture some of the most protective cars ever in recent years, through intensified crash-tests and advancements in technology. After all, safer cars mean cheaper car insurance. We take a look at five of them here:

Hyundai Sonata

The IIHS, as Hyundai proudly proclaim on their website, awarded the Sonata the ‘Top Pick’ award for safety recently. It performed impressively in terms of crumple zones at both the front and rear of the vehicle and has Electronic Stability Control, which applies intelligent braking to individual wheels on corners. This carries over into emergency braking too, since the car detects when the driver brakes hard and applies sufficient pressure to ensure that the stopping distance is kept to a minimum.

Honda Civic

The fact that this compact car has sold so many units is a real testament to its overall safety level and reliability. A significant amount of its appeal likely comes from the fact that it is in the lower band of car insurance groups, but it has great safety features like the anti-lock brakes and full standard airbags – driver, front-side, passenger and side head curtain. Admittedly, the sedan performed better in crash-tests than the coupe did, but the Civic achieved a good overall safety rating for features such as the minimization of potential pedestrian injury by building a more malleable hood and set of windscreen wipers.

Volvo XC60

Volvo is famous for the safety of its cars and the XC60 continues to live up to that reputation. It packs a side-impact protection system, dynamic stability and traction control, and a whiplash protection feature. Moreover, it has a laser-powered City Safety System installed to anticipate accidents at less than 30 km/h, that forewarn drivers of them and prepare the car for braking.

Ford Fiesta

This mini-car passed the IIHS frontal offset crash-test with flying colors, which is no surprise considering that the majority of its body is made from high-strength or ultra-high strength steel. As a result, the survival space for the driver – after a 40mph crash into a wall – was kept in a more than acceptable state. It is also one of the highest-rated vehicles in terms of roof-safety, according to the IIHS. It is popular among youngsters and first-time drivers not only because it’s an affordable mini-car, but also because it keeps the cost of student car insurance at reasonable levels.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

There is always a place for a Jeep on car safety lists. The Grand Cherokee is a sturdy, durable and altogether reliable machine with a ‘Top Safety Pick’ award to its name in 2011. Ranking consistently at the top with the IIHS and the NHTSA, having gained five out of five stars in most categories, it is the ultimate vehicle for on- and off-road safety. A total of 45 safety features, including rain brake support and an enhanced accident response system, keep occupants comfortably protected at all times.

Fiat Plans Russian-built Jeeps

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Several rumors have surfaced the Internet last week regarding Fiat who will invest about $1.1 billion in a brand new assembly plant in Russia that will build Jeeps and other vehicles. This factory is reported to have an assembly capacity of 120,000 units / year. The Italian automaker reached last year a preliminary agreement with Russia’s Sollers group in order to form a $3.3 billion venture for assembling Jeeps, along with other cars. This deal involved creating a new plant in Naborezhnye Chelny, but the deal fell through at the beginning of this year.

Fiat has not given up and this time they want to do it on their own, with a little help from the Russian Ministry of Economy. Despite the fact that the new plant will be built in Nizhny Novogorod, which is the HQ of the important Russian automaker GAZ, there are no plans of a partnership in the near future, although in the past there were some negotiations but nothing went official.

According to Russian analysts, Jeep will have a hard time to obtain a niche in Russia’s saturated market, although the brand has a powerful global recognition. The number o Jeeps that were sold in Russia in the last few years is very low. In 2010, Jeep managed to sell only 809 units in Russia, according to the Association of European Businesses, as opposed to Land Rover that delivered 10,000 cars.

Fiat will also have to think about the price tag of these vehicles, taking into consideration that there is some fierce competition coming from the cars made in Korea and China.

Lenny Kravitz rocks the new Jeep Wrangler

Cross promotion is something that really works in the automotive world. The latest example of this marketing trick is the colaboration between Jeep and Lenny Kravitz. The rockstar was hired to shake the company’s image and give it that rugged sex appeal that the new 2011 Wrangler needed in order to capture its audience.

Although Lenny doesn’t strike me as a woodland creature, his image is quite compatible with what the 2011 Wrangler tries to communicate.

Along with the ad, Jeep offers its audience a glimpse of a new song that Lenny has prepared for his upcoming album. This exposure trade seems to work okay for both sides. I’ll let you see the ad and then I can’t wait to hear your opinions.

So, rockstar worthy or not?

Jeep Working On New Models For Europe

2011 Jeep Liberty Jet

One of the objectives of the Fiat-Chrysler alliance is to increase Jeep sales in Europe, which is the biggest export market for the brand. They aim pretty high taking into consideration that this year Jeep will most likely sell only 25,000 units, but their objective is to increase that figure to 125,000 cars by 2014. The company is hoping to accomplish this by bringing new smaller SUVs in Europe, along with updated versions of some of their current models.

One of the new cars that Jeep will introduce in Europe is going to be a baby Wrangler, which will be manufactured in Toluca, Mexico and will be sold also in North and South America by 2014. A brand new compact SUV will replace the Compass/Patriot models and it will be built at Fiat’s Mirafiori plant in Italy. Most likely, it will share a platform with a similar sport utility vehicle that Alfa Romeo is developing; a car that will be sold in the U.S. Alfa’s model should be out towards the end of next year, while the Jeep will most likely be offered in both front-wheel drive and AWD configurations.

In addition, Jeep will also bring the updated version of the European-spec Cherokee, dubbed Liberty in North America. It will be available with an AWD system (FWD is not of the equation yet) and should hit the dealerships in 2013. Under the hood it will feature Fiat-sourced engines, including a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that produces 170 PS.
