[press release] Nissan’s QR Code Campaign

Quick Response (QR) Code Window Sticker Added to All Vehicles, Providing Enhanced Interactive Customer Shopping Experience –
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

Nissan today announced that it is the first Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to offer Quick Response (QR) codes on individual vehicle window stickers across its entire lineup, beginning with 2012 models. Rolled out in June with the launch of the 2012 Nissan Altima and Sentra, the QR codes link consumers to additional vehicle information, providing a free, enhanced interactive shopping experience via the most popular web-enabled iPhone, Android and Blackberry devices.

“Nissan’s new QR code program puts important decision-making information at shoppers’ fingertips while on dealership lots, helping sales personnel make a more effective presentation, as well as providing customers with a ‘silent salesperson’ if they are shopping the lot after hours,” said Jon Brancheau, vice president, Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s a true mass market effort across all products and all Nissan dealerships nationwide – part of our pledge to bring innovation to every aspect of the vehicle design, buying and ownership experience.”

The Nissan “On Vehicle Graphics” system utilizes QR code technology, which is easily accessed by a large group of customers through a wide array of QR code readers.

Key information available through the QR codes includes:
• Specific vehicle information, including grade walk, key features and available accessories
• Video based product overviews
• Image gallery
• Incentive offers
• Dealer inventory
• Request a quote capability
• Join mailing list request
• Dealer location support

“Initial consumer response, based on early 2012 Altima QR code availability, has been extremely encouraging, with consumers viewing multiple pages and requesting follow-up information regarding current offers and inventory,” said Brancheau. “It’s one more way Nissan helps the consumer by delivering content on their terms.”

[press release] General Motors to Launch First Real-World Smart Grid Pilot

OnStar connectivity will help Chevy Volt Customers reduce driving costs

• Smart grid solutions enable utilities to manage electric vehicle energy demands
• OnStar will be the lone telematics provider able to create wireless bridge between electric vehicles and the grid
• Regional utility employees will drive Volts as every day vehicles in Q3

RALEIGH, N.C. – General Motors and OnStar will launch the first real-world pilot of smart grid solutions for electric vehicles this year, paving the way for utilities to increase energy efficiency and offer lower charging costs to customers.

Starting this quarter, hundreds of employees of regional utilities will drive leased Chevrolet Volts as their everyday vehicles and participate in the pilot.

“In contrast to other OEMs who are only talking about smart grid technology, we’re moving beyond research and development projects to a program in the real world,” said Nick Pudar, OnStar vice president of planning and business development. “Through this pilot we will see real-time results on how intelligent energy management can maximize EV charging efficiency and minimize the electric bill for EV drivers.”

Many utility companies throughout the United States have implemented programs where customers opt in to allow the utility to stop and start their home air conditioning units as needed when electricity demand is high. The customer benefit from this service is a lower electricity bill. OnStar’s smart grid solution builds on this concept, but to a much more advanced and sophisticated level.

Through the OnStar Advanced Telematics Operations Management System (ATOMS), a utility will be able to accurately monitor and manage the energy used by the vehicles. The data will give the utility deep insight into where and when EVs are charged and demand response, which allows the utility to reduce peak demand by shifting EV charging to non-peak hours.

“OnStar is the only telematics provider that can create a wireless bridge between electric vehicles and the grid, building on our learning from the Chevrolet Volts on the road today,” Pudar said.

Through OnStar’s ATOMS infrastructure and partners’ solutions, utilities will be able to implement two Smart Grid services:

• Data Gathering. With customer permission, OnStar will provide the utility with overall charge level as well as charging history – by time and location – for the Volt pilot fleet, without the vehicles having to connect to a charging station. This will give the utility better insight for forecasting demand, setting rates and determining the best location for charging infrastructure.

• Demand response. OnStar will allow the utility to actively manage EV charging for those who opt in to the service. The utility can then reduce peak loads by offering discounts or other incentives to encourage drivers to charge their EVs when overall electricity demand is lowest, typically in the early morning hours.

OnStar, the automotive industry leader in telematics, first demonstrated EV data gathering and demand response in February at the DistribuTECH conference in San Diego. The Chevrolet Volt is now available in select U.S. markets and will be available nationwide by the end of the year.

[press release] Renaults equipped with Carminat TomTom navigation system

  • Renault recently fitted its one-millionth in-car Carminat TomTom navigation system in two years.
  • Today, more than one in two Renaults sold worldwide is equipped with Carminat TomTom.
  • LIVE services offer customers the full benefit of intelligent, connected navigation coupled with innovative services and real-time information.
  • At €490, Carminat TomTom is the least expensive and best selling integrated and connected navigation system on the market.

Renault recently topped the one-million mark in vehicles equipped with a Carminat TomTom navigation system and is announcing an unprecedented fit rate of 38% on Clio, 77% on Scénic and 25% on Trafic.

Carminat TomTom is available today on all Renault passenger cars (apart from Modus, Twingo and Wind) and since early 2010 on all the brand’s light commercial vehicles.

Faithful to its tradition of ingenious innovations that are accessible to all, Renault started working on an integrated navigation system back in 1982. It launched its first road trials on the Carminat system in 1994, becoming the first carmaker to propose fully embedded navigation systems. The systems were upgraded in 2002 with dynamic route guidance and the recalculation of journey times, for example in the case of a drop in vehicle speed.

In partnership with the leader in personal navigation solutions, Renault is enhancing flexibility and time to market while bringing customers excellent ergonomics by fully integrating the navigation system in the vehicle.

Launched in spring 2009, Carminat TomTom is upgraded continuously for ever more efficiency. Carminat TomTom received two new functions in early 2010: IQ Routes™, proposing the best route plan according to real vehicle speed and journey times based on statistics calculated every moment every day of the week, and Advanced Lane Guidance, which visualizes intersections and traffic lanes.

Navigation took a big step forward in terms of driver support in late 2010 with the launch of the Carminat TomTom LIVE. The entire Renault range is now available with four innovative connected services as options:

- HD Traffic: for the best traffic information in real time.
- Road safety alerts: real-time alerts on incidents, dangerous areas and risk areas.
- Google local search: shows points of interest from nearly 20 million references.
- 5-day weather forecasts.

Commenting, Giles Shrimpton, CEO of TomTom Automotive, said: “We are extremely happy to announce that the one millionth Carminat TomTom has been fitted on board a Renault vehicle. This figure is tangible proof of the success of our product and our partnership with Renault. We plan to continue this partnership with Renault in the long term by bringing our customer the best of our expertise.

Stephen Norman, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing at Renault, said: “One million Renault owners have since 2009 chosen an in-dash Carminat TomTom navigation system. Today, for just €490, this intelligent on-board system brings customers connected services that are highly appreciated and hard to go without once you have experienced their quality.

[press release] Renault enhances young people’s image of automotive industry

“Sustainable mobility accessible to all” is a core Renault strategy, and it is in this light that the company is taking part in the 20th anniversary of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, ACEA.
• As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, ACEA is organizing a forum in Brussels from June 22 to 25.
• Young Europeans aged from 18 to 30 have been invited to the event to share their ideas and thoughts on the future of transport and mobility, under the banner “Our Future Mobility Now”.
• Renault is taking part in the event to raise the awareness of young people on mobility and enhance their image of the automotive industry.

Renault, a major player in future mobility, is participating in the “Our Future Mobility Now” forum organized by ACEA at Autoworld in Brussels from June 22 to 25. Some 46 young people from 15 European countries have been selected by the ACEA project to take part in debates on the future of mobility and transport with leaders from the auto industry and the European Union. The Renault delegation will be led by Claire Martin, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility and the Renault Corporate Foundation, Rémi Bastien, Head of Research, Advanced Studies and Materials, and Patrick Hoffstetter, Head of the Digital Production Center. They will be accompanied by three students currently studying in one of the programs supported by the Renault Foundation.

Renault’s involvement in the event is consistent with its ambitious 2011 recruitment plan. The company is planning to hire 1,500 people this year on open-ended contracts in France across all business lines, including 400 recently graduated engineers to work in engineering and production.

This recruitment drive is also being accompanied by a proactive approach to taking on young people as part of work-study programs, before they look for their first jobs. These programs give these youngsters the opportunity to acquire real professional skills and find out about the wealth of trades at Renault. By end-2011 some 2,700 young people on work-study schemes will be present at the company. Renault aims to raise the share of this population to 5% of the total workforce by 2013.

In addition, the participation of Mr. Hoffstetter shows the brand’s ambition to establish a leading position on the web – the preferred communication channel of young people.

As part of the exhibition accompanying the ACEA forum, Renault will be presenting:
- a Carminat TomTom Live demonstrator (the least expensive in-car, connected navigation system on the market),
- a see-through Fluence Z.E. electric car (showing the interior of the vehicle),
- an Energy TCe Concept engine.

Renault is committed to developing a range of electric vehicles accessible to all – the spearhead of its environmental commitment. Since 1995 Renault has led an environmental policy that takes account of the impact of all its activities at each stage of the vehicle life cycle. The criteria for the company’s Renault eco2 signature, introduced in 2007, have been tightened this year. The most environmental and economical vehicles in the Renault range now comply with the following conditions: they are produced in an ISO 14001-certified plant, emit less than 120 g/km of CO2 or run on biofuel, and contain more than 7% recycled plastic.

In addition, Renault is preparing for the future through an ambitious objective on global warming set out in its “Renault 2016 – Drive the Change” strategic plan, namely to reduce its carbon footprint by 10% between now and 2013 and by a further 10% between 2013 and 2016.

Renault Corporate Foundation
The Renault Corporate Foundation, founded in 2001, embodies Renault’s hands-on commitment to further education. It is tasked with forming lasting ties between the company and French and international academic institutions. It designs and supports original training programs on multicultural management and sustainable development.

[press release] Renault-Nissan Alliance opens Silicon Valley research office

The automotive group’s Mountain View facility will focus on vehicle IT, advanced engineering research, and technology recruitment.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – The Renault-Nissan Alliance will open a research office later this month in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Directly across from the Google campus and minutes from leading hardware and software companies, the offices in Mountain View will allow one of the world’s largest automotive groups to capitalize on the region’s world-class engineering talent and stay ahead of trends that are reshaping the way people interact with their cars.

The office will build staff organically to focus on specific projects and business developments as they emerge. Small, highly efficient teams will initially work on vehicle IT development, advanced engineering research and technology recruitment.

“The Alliance is at the vanguard of the auto industry’s shift to sustainable transportation. Having a greater footprint in one of the world’s headquarters for clean tech research will extend our lead further,” said Carlos Ghosn, CEO and Chairman of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, who is giving a talk at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) today. Ghosn’s “Clean Cars” presentation at Stanford will focus on how and why zero-emission technologies is leading to unprecedented opportunities in the auto industry and economy.

Created in 1999, the Renault-Nissan Alliance is a unique partnership between two of the largest automakers in Europe and Japan. Renault and Nissan, which together employ more than 350,000 workers, sold 7.2 million cars in 2010 – about one in 10 cars worldwide. Paris-based Renault and Yokohama-based Nissan collaborate through joint purchasing, platform sharing and cross-shareholding. They maintain separate brands and cultural identities.

$5.4 Billion Commitment to Sustainable Mobility
The Nissan LEAF, which debuted last year, is the world’s first affordable, mass-marketed pure electric vehicle, and it’s the first product from the Alliance’s $5.4 billion investment in zero-emission cars. Upcoming debuts include an Infiniti premium electric sedan, the Renault Twizy urban commuter car for Europe, and utility vans for commercial fleets. All can be charged purely with renewable energy, for 100 percent zero emissions “well to wheel.”

Nissan will use the Silicon Valley office to focus on vehicle IT research, including graphical user-interface displays, in-car Internet connectivity and smart-grid research. Nissan’s “Carwings” telematics system, a standard in every Nissan LEAF, includes a seven-inch touchscreen with maps of recharging stations and real-time reports on energy consumption. Nissan has delivered more than 7,500 LEAFs worldwide.

Renault, one of the largest carmakers in Europe, will be launching a broad range of affordable, zero-emission cars for overseas markets. Renault Fluence ZE, which debuts later this year in Europe and the Middle East, has a folding floor that enables a battery swap in less time than it takes to fill a car with gasoline. Renault’s Silicon Valley work will focus on research and advanced engineering, in particular electric vehicles and their supplier and infrastructure ecosystem, on-board services and business development.

Renault-Nissan Alliance is a strategic partnership between Paris-based Renault and Yokohama, Japan-based Nissan. The companies have 350,000 employees and account for one in 10 new cars sold annually around the world. The Alliance is committed to developing a wide range of cars and trucks for consumers in every major price and size segment — including low-cost cars, urban commuter cars, commercial vans, premium vehicles and SUVs. The Alliance is the global auto industry leader in sustainable transportation and the only car group mass-producing zero-emission vehicles.
