Spy Shots – VW E-Up!

VW E-Up! (mule)

Before you say anything, the car you see in these pictures is in fact the VW E-Up! but the German automaker has clothed the development mule in a previous generation Polo. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the wheelbase is shorter and there is no exhaust. In addition, it has a BlueMotion-style blanked-off front grille, which means that this is an electric car.

The VW E-Up! concept debuted back in 2009 during the Frankfurt Motor Show and the production version promises to provide zero-emissions, cheap motoring in a small-size package, but without compromising practicality. The car will be powered by lithium-ion batteries which will be installed under the floor. These will generate 80 hp (60 kW) and 210 Nm of torque, which should be enough for a range up to 80 miles. Charging the batteries to 80% of their level is done in only one hour.

Aside from the electric technology, the Volkswagen E-Up! will have an innovative interior cabin, featuring a 3+1 seating configuration that promises to maximize space. The German car maker wants to keep the price tag of the car as low as possible so don’t expect any extra goodies.

They’ll also launch a conventional-powered version of the car which will have a gasoline engine that will drive the front wheels. Set to go on sale in 2013 with a starting price of 7,000 pounds, it will have the same configuration of the interior as its greener counterpart.
