This would have to be the first video where we see a live crash of an Aston Martin Rapide. The accident happened on a highway somewhere in United Kingdom and one of the reasons for this unfortunate accident was because the driver disabled the car’s traction control. He did this because he thought it was the sport button.
While he was getting out of the highway, the car understeered severely and the driver was not able to control the car anymore. The beautiful Aston Martin Rapide ended up in the side barrier and it was heavily damaged. The good news is that the driver and the passenger escaped without any injuries.
The British carmaker Aston Martin has decided to reduce the production rate of the Rapide in order to match the slow sales. From now on, they are going to make only 25 units every year which means that the annual output will be of approximately 1250 units, which is a little over 50% of the 2,000 units that they had in planned back in 2007/2008. Other sources are saying that AM will reduce output to only 10 cars per week.
Last month, the company halted the production of the Rapide and right after the weekend of the Royal Wedding, an e-mail was sent to the suppliers in which Aston Martin said that they don’t need any more components for the rest of the month.
A couple of days ago, the automaker announced that they will be ending an 8-year production agreement with Magna Steyr from Austria in the middle of next year, which is 6 years earlier than planned. No word about the terms of the contract but if we were to believe the rumors, Aston Martin will have to pay about 10 million pounds in order to get out of this deal.
As if the Aston Martin Rapide wasn’t exclusive enough, the British company though there is room for improvement and unveiled the Luxe special edition. The package comes us a few new exterior features, like new exclusive colors, bright finish grille and 20-inch alloy wheels and a set of new interior features including custom leather upholestry, Walnut wood trim, rear seat entertainment system and an impressive 1000W Bang & Olufsen sound system.
No technical upgrades are available, which means the Rapide Luxe is powered by the same 6.0-liter V12 delivering 470 hp (350 kW) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque, which, mated to a six-speed Touchtronic 2 transmission, takes the car from stand to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and up to a top speed of 188 mph (303 km/h).
So far, Aston Martin didn’t say anything about pricing, but we’re guessing it ain’t gonna be pretty.
It seems that the huge negative backlash after the reveal of the Lagonda SUV has made Aston Martin reconsider launching the ghastly concept we saw last year.
According to a new report, Aston Martin won’t pursue the Lagonda SUV plans as existing customers have sent a lot of negative feedback about the awkward concept.
Instead, Aston might still revive the Lagonda brand, but with a different type of model. It seems that the British carmaker is planning a Lagonda sedan, which will be based on the existing Rapide.
Not much is known, but according to the same report, the Lagonda-branded Rapide will arrive much later, in 2014 at the least, in order to give the Aston Martin version time to expand its sales. This date might also hint that the Lagonda will be based on the second generation Rapide, and incorporate some of its improvements.
Still, at least we should be happy that Aston Martin has scrapped the whole Lagonda SUV project.
Aston Martin is by far one of the most respected carmakers in the world, but, sadly, this hasn’t been paying the bills lately at the Gaydon HQ.
As such, the British sportscar manufacturer is planning some serious shakeups to its lineup, in order to become more profitable but also to meet the strict fuel and emissions regulations that will be adopted by the EU and in the USA.
Luckily for us, the blokes at Autocar have gotten their hands on Aston Martin’s six-year plan. Even if some of the entries were already known, there are still quite a lot of interesting tidbits of information.
First off, 2011 will see the introduction of the Aston Martin Cygnet city car, essentially an upmarket Toyota iQ, designed for AM fans that want something to zip around town. It’s small engine and low weight will definitely improve the fuel average across the lineup.
Next up, the iconic DB9 is set to get a drastic overhaul in 2013, as its VH aluminum alloy chassis will be upgraded. The main goal is to decrease weight yet ensure great handling. A key role will be played by an optimized version of the V12 engine, currently under the bonnet of the DB9. It will also be put on a diet and will see the addition of emission-reducing and fuel-saving technologies.
2014 will see the same treatment be applied to the Vantage model. Even if sales of this specific car have suffered from the economic downturn, Aston is confident that with the right upgrades and a strict diet, the Vantage will continue to shine among the opposition.
Still in 2014, Aston Martin will push the Lagonda brand front and center. The first model will be a luxury SUV, in the vein of the concept we saw last year. Before you worry, Aston has revealed that the design will be overhauled, in order to give it a sense of class. It is expected that the British carmaker will borrow the GL Class chassis from Mercedes-Benz.
The Aston Martin DBS will also receive its own refresh, in 2015. More power will definitely be added, while the weight will be reduced. Given the high sales of this specific model, it’s safe to say that not a lot of things will change.
Last but not least, in 2016, Aston might also refresh the Rapide super sedan. The fate of the model will rest with the sales figures it will achieve up until then. Given the shared chassis with the DB9, the same changes are also expected to hit the four-door model.
As an overall design line, expect cues to be taken from the recent One-77 hypercar, as well as a few other internal projects from Aston.
The newest trend among luxury sportscar manufacturers, besides reducing weight and keeping emissions as low as possible, is the introduction of four-door sedans. We’ve seen the Porsche Panamera or the Aston Martin Rapide, so a lot of people are wondering what’s the next luxury carmaker that will go for four.
According to Amedeo Felisa, the boss of Ferrari, you can scratch the Italian sportscar manufacturer from that list, as he proclaimed that a four-door model won’t appear in the future from his company.
“As Enzo [Ferrari, company founder] would say, we will never do four doors,” said Felisa. “And we will keep this tradition. We stand 60 years and we never needed four doors. What never means, I don’t know, but one of the strong points of Ferrari is to keep the product in the right way. I’m not saying four doors is not right for the image, but it’s not part of our heritage.”
Those who really want a four-door Ferrari should opt for a Maserati, according to Felisa. He also revealed that the research in hybrid technology or the appearance of start-stop systems was imposed on the company due to emissions regulations, but that four-doors aren’t in any other rule book.
As you may remember, McLaren’s Ron Dennis also revealed that his own company will stick to making sportscars without four-doors, in order to keep the brand pure.
The 24 Hours of Nurburgring endurance racing competition is slowly approaching its start date, taking place between May 15 and 16. As such, quite a few carmakers are announcing their participation in the prestigious event.
Aston Martin is the latest to join the pack consisting of brands like Lexus, with LFA race cars, Peugeot, with its RCZ 200 Ans, or Porsche with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. But while the entry of the Aston Martin V12 Vantage was obvious, seeing as how the car won the previous two races in the SP8 category, the British carmaker shocked everyone, as it will also race a near-stock version of its Rapide super sedan.
That’s right, it seems that while many race cars will only be able to seat two, Aston Martin will be able to ride around with all of its drivers inside the racing car (although they won’t do that). What’s also impressive is that just a few modifications were made to make the Rapide race-worthy.
These mods include stripping the interior of excess weight, adding extra safety features, fitting new adjustable suspension and slick, racing tires. Aston’s CEO, Dr. Ulrich Bez, will be leading the team, comprised of factory drivers, at the Nurburgring endurance event.
Aston Martin has just revealed the pricing details of its upcoming Rapide super sedan, which will go on in spring of 2010, around the world. For its local UK market, the prices will start from £139,950, and will undoubtedly rise depending on what options you will want with the four-door model.
US customers, on the other hand, won’t pay that much for the Rapide, as a base model will cost $199,950, much lower than what normal exchange rates would convert the UK price. Of course such a decision was made to keep the super sedan under the psychological $200k limit.
Although many Aston Martin fans will deny that the Rapide can even be compared to the Panamera, it is worth to note that Porsche’s super sedan costs much less than the Aston, and even the top of the range Panamera Turbo, has a lower price tag, and also trumps the 470 HP that the Rapide develops from its V12 unit.
Rich people, the choice is your, but if you want an Aston Martin Rapide, then you need to get on the pre-order list as soon as possible.
A new genre of supercars is growing by leaps and bounds these days, as many new automakers are trying their hands on creating four-door performance vehicles, the super sedans. One of the most noticeable models is the Porsche Panamera, but UK manufacturer Aston Martin is trying to beat the German company with the upcoming Rapide model.
In order to show the testing stages through which the super sedan has gone through, the company has released this new video in which the development process is explained, including the endurance testing around the Nurburgring and the powertrain development which focused on the Stelvio Pass in Italy.

Supercars usually have two-doors, leading many who can’t afford them to call their drivers selfish, for not sharing the ride with more people at the same time. Thankfully for them, the newest trend in between supercar makers is to create super-sedans, capable of transporting a family of four wherever they want, with speed and in style.
The most hyped out of these Grand Tourers is the Porsche Panamera, which sparked some very biased feedback from auto enthusiasts. Now, UK manufacturer Aston Martin decided to build its own four-door super-sedan, in the form of the Rapide, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show today.
After much debate and many rumors, the Rapide has manifested into a production-ready model, with some very impressive performance figures. Powered by a 6-liter V12 engine, build by hand, it will offer 470 HP, available at 6000 rpm, with a torque of 600 Nm (440 lb-ft), available at 5000 rpm. This big engine is coupled to a Touctronic 2 automatic gearbox, with six speeds and flappy magnesium paddles in order to manually change gears if you want.
The Aston Martin Rapide offers plenty of boot space, almost 301 liters, which can get even bigger if you press a button in order to fold down the rear seats, thus attaining 750 liters of space. All of the passengers will be pampered by fine materials, hand-sown leather, individual A/C systems, DVD screens in the back of the front seats and, as a tradition, a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
These are all of the details revealed up until now, but be sure that we will keep you up to date as soon as the UK manufacturer reveals the launch date and the price.
