Five-door Audi A1 Sportback announced

Audi A1 Sportback

Yesterday, Audi revealed the five-door version of the A1 model which as far as the styling is concerned has a lot in common with its three-door sibling. The length of the car (3.95 meters) and the wheelbase (2.47 meters) are exactly the same as the three-door model, while the height and width have increased by 6 mm in order to improve room inside the cabin.

Audi A1 Sportback

As standard, the Audi A1 Sportback comes with a four-seat configuration but you can order it with a fifth one, no extra charge. The Ingolstadt-based automaker mentioned that shoulder room and headroom have increased about 0.39 inches (1 cm) compared to the three-door model. The trunk of the car has a capacity of 9.53 cu ft. (270 liters) which can be increased by folding down the split rear seat back. Doing so will increase the cargo room to 32.49 cu ft. (920 liters).

Audi A1 Sportback

In Europe the car will be available with a choice of three gasoline engines and three diesels. The entry-level gasoline engine will be a 1.2-liter TFSI unit that produces 86 hp and manages to return 46.1 mpg (5.1 liters / 100 km), along with two 1.4-liter TFSI engines, one that develops 122 hp and another one that generates 185 hp. With the most powerful engine, the Audi A1 Sportback is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 141 mph (227 km/h).

Audi A1 Sportback

As for diesels, there are two 1.6-liter TDIs, one with 90 hp and the other with 105 hp. Both of these engines manage to return 61.9 mpg (3.8 liters / 100 km). There’s also a beefier 2.0-liter TDI that fires 143 hp and enables the A1 Sportback to hit 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and return 57.4 mpg (4.1 liters / 100 km).

Audi A1 Sportback

For the 1.4 TFSI 122 hp engine and the 1.6 TDI 90 hp unit, Audi offers an optional 7-speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox, while the 185 hp 1.4 TFSI model gets it as standard.

The car will reach the dealerships in the spring of next year and in Germany it will carry a base price of 16,950 Euros for the model fitted with the 1.2-liter TFSI gasoline engine and in the Attraction trim level. The A1 Sportback equipped with the 1.6 TDI 90 hp engine will cost from 19,050 Euros.

Superchips Launches Power Upgrade For Audi A1 1.4 TFSI

Audi A1 1.4 TFSI by Superchips

If you have the 1.4 TFSI engine on your Audi A1 and you think that it should have more power, the engineers from Superchips have just the right thing for you. The British aftermarket specialists have unveiled this week a power upgrade that consists of a remapped ECU that increases the output of the engine by 26 hp and 28 Nm of torque, over the car’s standard 122 PS.

They mentioned that compared to the car that comes out from Audi’s factory, the one tweaked has more power to offer from as low as 2000 rpm up to the 6500 rpm rev limiter. As far as the extra torque, it is available between 1500 rpm and 6500 rpm. With this power upgrade, the Audi A1 is able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in 7.8 seconds, which is 1.1 seconds quicker than the standard car. They haven’t tested the car’s top speed but it will most likely go over the standard 126 mph. The fuel consumption of the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI by Superchips is 45 mpg UK.

The power kit is available for both the A1s with the 6-speed manual transmission or the 7-speed semi-automatic S-Tronic gearbox. The price tag is 455 pounds, with VAT.

Pogea Audi A1 Revealed

Pogea Audi A1

The tuners from Pogea Racing have announced their customization program for the Audi A1. They’ve upped the output of the engine, but this wasn’t a rather easy process as you might have expected due to the reason that the ECU of the A1, along with other processors, are password protected by a system which the automaker has named Tuning Protection Level 10.

However, Pogea’s hackers and tuners managed to reprogram the ECU, giving a healthy power boost. In other words, the A1’s engine can output 156 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 266 Nm @ 3,300 rpm, good for a top speed of 245 km/h. This power increase is available for the Stage I program.

Pogea Audi A1

The Stage II has been developed for the “sportier clients” and comes with a KW coilover suspension Variant 2 set up for the Hockenheimring track, along with additional air cooling and black-painted OZ Racing Alleggrita HLT rims, wrapped around in ET35 Sport Contact 3 Continental rubber. In addition, the engineers at Pogea have fitted the tiny A1 with a new set of Brembo brakes and a custom exhaust system.

My only complaint about this tuning program is the color; they should have chosen something a little bit more lively, like red for example.

Senner Launches Audi A1 1.4 TSI Tuning Program

Senner Audi A1 1.4 TSI

Earlier this week the German tuners from Senner have released their tuning program for the Audi A1 which adds some extra muscles to the smallest model from Audi’s lineup. The standard Audi A1 develops 122 hp (90 kW) and 220 Nm and with the help of this tuning program, the same engine can output 156 hp and 250 Nm of torque. This extra boost in power is available thanks to the BMC OTA Power Airbox that replaces the standard air filter plus the Chipbox ECU upgrade along with a stainless steel exhaust system that has 90mm tailpipes.

The Audi A1 1.4 TSI tuned by Senner rolls on 18-inch Conriche Monza black-polis wheels that are wrapped in Hankook S1 Evo tires. In comparison to the standard model, the Senner A1 is 35 mm lower to the ground with the help of the new sport springs.

The price for all of the above mentioned features is 4590 Euros.

Senner Audi A1 1.4 TSI

As an optional feature, the car can be fitted with a coilover suspension with custom height, compression and rebound adjustments as well as various carbon fiber components for lowering the weight. The interior of the A1 can also be customized and the car can be had with LED rear lights.

The prices for these optional features are available upon request.

20 Audi A1 e-tron prototypes hit the streets of Munich

Audi wants to keep on with its electric and hybrid research, and has just announced that it will roll out a test fleet of 20 Audi A1 e-tron prototypes.

In case you forgot, the extended range electric vehicle was revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, boasting a 100 HP electric motor, which can keep the vehicle running for around 31 miles, and a rotary Wankel engine, designed to kick in when the lithium ion battery pack doesn’t have enough juice to keep powering the motor. This can add up to 123 miles to the range, meaning a total of 155 miles for the A1 e-tron.

The 20 prototypes will be rolled out around the streets of Munich, and are partly funded by the German Transportation Ministry. The federal authority will also invest in building nearly 200 electric charging stations around the city, in order to create an infrastructure capable of supporting electric vehicles.

Audi A1 will be sold globally but the US needs to wait until the next generation

Audi A1 will be sold globally but the US needs to wait until the next generation

Back when the new Audi A1 compact was first announced, officials revealed that it will be sold just in Europe, given the territory’s fondness of premium city cars.

Now, things have changed. According to Audi’s sales boss, Peter Schwarzenbauer, the global interest in the A1 has gone past all expectations, and as such, we will get to see the A1 reach other continents in the future.

Production is already being increased, given the already high popularity of the A1, and Audi is set to focus on the Asian markets in the next few years. China will be the main focus, but the German company wants to seriously ramp up production before it will launch the A1 there. This means that Chinese customers will be able to get their hands on the attractive compact around 2012.

The US market, on the other hand, will still be deprived of the A1, seeing as how customers are still reluctant to pay a premium for a city car. The model will eventually appear on North American shores, but probably with the second generation model.

Audi planning A1 Allroad model to rival Mini Countryman?

Audi planning A1 Allroad model to rival Mini Countryman?

Mini used to be all about making compact city cars, but with the Countryman compact crossover, things have gotten bigger for the brand.

Seeing as how its A1 city model will directly rival the usual Mini cars, Audi is now rumored to be preparing a direct contender for the Countryman. Even though a Q3 might make more sense, it seems that Audi will prepare an A1 Allroad model.

According to AutoZeitung, it seems that an Allroad version, currently available for the A4 and A6, will be making its way onto the A1 range around 2013, joining the current three-door and the future five-door editions.

Not much else is known about this future model, but it seems that the Quattro all-wheel drive system will be making an appearance. This would really explain the fact that Audi has refrained from offering the technology on the regular A1 editions.

Frankly, we’re not so sure about this rumor, but crazier things have been seen before. What say you? Share your thoughts about this possible A1 Allroad in the comment section below.

Saab’s future 92 going ahead as planned, will target Mini

Even though it dropped out of the media spotlight after being rescued in the nick of time by Spyker from GM, Swedish carmaker Saab is still going ahead full steam with its revival plans.

A big part of the Saab renaissance will be a completely new 92 successor, a compact hatch designed to take on other premium city car rivals like the Mini or the newly revealed Audi A1.

According to Victor Muller, the company’s CEO, the new 92 will be reminiscent of the teardrop-shaped Saabs of yesteryear and the brand is already in talks with quite a few carmakers to share the future platform of the 92. This would achieve a much needed reduction in developments costs, given Saab’s still rocky financial situation.

Muller revealed that he is checking in with designers every day for updates on the future 92, and that when he’s not talking with his team, he’s reaching out to manufacturers for the platform development.

Given the already popular Mini, the Fiat 500 or the new Audi A1, plus other premium city cars from the likes of Mercedes-Benz or BMW, is Saab making the right choice to dive into this segment? Pitch in your two cents below.
