Audi’s A8 Ad Puts The S-Class To Bed

If some of you thought that this year we won’t be seeing ads like this one, you would be wrong. Only two weeks have passed and already Audi launched an ad where the Mercedes S-Class is put to “sleep”. This United States-market ad is in fact a prelude to Audi’s highly anticipated new Super Bowl ad which will air on February 6th, during Super Bowl Sunday.

Audi’s “goodnight” ad is at the moment airing on several cable channels across the US and is aired on FOX and CBS during the NFL playoffs.

In my opinion, the ad is not very clever because there is nothing subtle in it as we can clearly state the obvious: the Audi A8 puts to bed the Mercedes S-Class along with the rest of the “outdated” luxury vehicles as Audi sees their new A8 model as “progressive luxury.”

Of course, we shouldn’t criticize Audi for trying to position itself as the new cool up-and-comer in the premium automotive segment. Taking into consideration that their sales are less than half in comparison to rivals BMW and Mercedes in the United States, they need to pull out the big guns to catch up.

I for one wouldn’t be surprised if both BMW and Mercedes will come up with their own ads as a response to this one.

2011 Audi A8 L offers 500 HP 6.3-liter W12 in a luxury package

Last year’s premiere of the 2011 Audi A8 flagship limousine impressed a lot of people, but still had a few nay-sayers. With the premiere of the 2011 Audi A8 L long wheelbase variant, that is certainly going to change, as the Ingolstadt manufacturer is packing a huge amount of power in a complete luxury offer.

First off, let’s start with the premium features. The limousine now measures 17.28 feet (5.2 meters), half a foot longer than the regular A8. This allowed the German carmaker to throw in the luxury features like nobody’s business. The rear of the A8 is now decked out in premium leather while the two rear seats are heated and cooled, can be adjusted in almost every imaginable way and employ ten air bladders to massage their occupants.

Further highlighting the space available in the rear, there’s even a folding ottoman seat, just in case you want to show off to your rich friends. There’s the standard four-zone climate control, but it can now be adjusted with the help of no less than 25 separate motors. The center tunnel can accommodate anything from a standard table to a refrigerator and anything in between. It also helps you control the 1,400-watt 19 speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system or enjoy a video on the two 10.2-inch LCD displays.

The 2011 Audi A8 L will still give you quite a few reasons to replace your chauffeur, as it boasts a massive 6.3-liter W12 engine under the bonnet. It outputs 500 HP and 461 lb-ft of torque, and pushes it through an eight-speed automatic to all the four wheels, thanks to the quattro AWD system. Its power translates in a 0 to 62 mph time of 4.9 seconds and an electronically-limited 155 mph top speed.

The Audi A8 L long wheelbase will be revealed in Beijing next week and appear on the market this summer. Until then, check out the luxury limousine in the photo gallery below.

Hofele Design reveals tuned 2011 Audi A8

The 2011 Audi A8 has just made its European debut last week at the Geneva Motor Show, but the tuners at Hofele Design have already revealed the first details on their upcoming performance and cosmetic tuning package for the new Ingolstadt flagship sedan.

The company tackled the 4.2 V8 FSI and the TDI variant, with some very impressive results. Power figures are now at 400 HP and 350 lb-ft for the petrol one, while the diesel boasts 395 HP and 649 lb-ft of torque. According to Hofele, these performance upgrades haven’t taken a toll on the fuel economy, still ranked at 24.75 mpg (US) for the FSI and 30.9 mpg (US) for the oil-burner.

Other upgrades include larger ventilated steel disc brakes and high performance ceramic discs can also be fitted for an extra cost. The suspension has been lowered between 40 and 90 millimeters, but as an added safety feature, the car springs back to the factory setting when traveling at over 80 mph (128 km/h). New alloy wheels measuring 20-inch at the front and 22-inch at the back have also been added by the team at Hofele.

Last but not least, the styling of the 2011 Audi A8 also saw an upgrade, thanks to the restyled front fascia, now boasting bigger air inlets and front fender outlets, the new side sills, and the restyled rear end, complete with a diffuser and quad-pipe exhaust. A decklid spoiler, as well as two-tone leather, Alcantara and a new steering wheel round off the Hofele tuning package for the 2011 Audi A8.

Audi revealed at the end of last year that the MultiMediaInterface system (MMI) in the new A8 limousine will be using Google Earth as its navigation software, in order to reveal to people a more accurate display of cities, roads and other useful information.

Now, a new video has appeared, showing Google Earth in action, just how it will work on the A8, when it will be launched this spring. The system allows you to check out the map in your region, hover over cities and check out Wikipedia entries about their history or what points of interest are present.

Inserting an address is also quite interesting, as you can use either the large dial, or the touch-sensitive portion besides it, to etch out letters, and the system will register them. Hit the jump to see Google Earth running on the Audi MMI system.
