In the last few months, rumors started appearing about a performance version of the Audi R8 supercar. While the normal version and its even more powerful V10 edition were plenty for many fans, some wanted even more.
As such, the Ingolstadt company officially revealed the Audi R8 GT limited edition. The engineers have worked their magic and applied the age-old recipe for improving supercars: decrease weight and increase power.
Through a thinner front windshield, polycarbonate rear windows, carbon fiber body panels and, we presume, a few sacrifices to supercar gods, the Audi team managed to shave 220 pounds off the curb weight of the R8 GT. Through some fiddling with the V10′s electronics (and more sacrifices) the power output was increased from 525 to a whopping 560 HP.
When coupled with the R-Tronic gearbox, the R8 GT will be able to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds and up to a top speed of 198.8 mph. Only 333 R8 GT models will be made, starting at €193,000 ($256,000) in Germany. No plans for an US launch, but you can be sure the Ingolstadt execs have something planned.
Either way, check out the new and improved Audi R8 GT in the photo gallery below.

The 2010 New York Auto Show brought forth a lot of big news. By far the most eagerly awaited was the announcement of the 2010 World Car of the Year winner.
We revealed to you the nominees at the beginning of the month, and you even voted for quite a lot of them in each category.
Now, the results are in, and the winner of the 2010 World Car of the Year award is the Volkswagen Polo. For those keeping score, its a back to back win for VW, as it received the 2009 WCOTY for the Golf VI last year. Also, this isn’t the first recognition the Polo got, as it also earned the 2010 European Car of the Year award. The other two finalists in the category were the Mercedes-Benz E Class (which received most of your votes) and the Toyota Prius.
The 2010 Performance Car of the Year winner is the Audi R8 V10, beating the Ferrari California and the Porsche 911 GT3. The R8 V10 also gathered the most votes in our own polls.
The 2010 Green Car of the Year award was won by Volkswagen’s BlueMotion lineup, consisting of the Polo, Golf and Passat. Its two other rivals were the Honda Insight and the Prius. Once more, you guys named the same winner in our own survey.
Last but not least, the 2010 Car Design of the Year award was won by the Chevrolet Camaro, beating the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Kia Soul. You were also on the same page, voting the big American muscle car.
Overall, a clean sweep for Volkswagen, managing to win through its brand and through Audi.

We revealed a couple of weeks ago that Audi might be working on an even more powerful version of its R8 supercar, which harnesses more ponies out of that V10 engine and might use some new technologies.
Now, Autocar has revealed that the main source of inspiration for this new version might be the R8 GT3 race car, which is crushing its opposition in various competitions and is experiencing huge demand from private teams and professional drivers.
Seeing the potential in the track-only model, Audi might be tempted to release a road-legal version, in order to satisfy performance enthusiasts. The offer, according to some voices, will be similar to how Porsche released the 911 GT3.
The official decision to manufacture such a car hasn’t been made yet, but Audi officials are already researching ways of making the current R8 lighter (hint: carbon fiber and spaceframe technology) and to squeeze more power from the 5.2-liter V10 engine. As you may know, the engine produces 518 HP in the R8 V10 but is capable of as much as 570 HP, as seen in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera.
A more powerful R8 is bound to appear sooner or later, but for the sake of Audi fans, the Ingolstadt manufacturer might need to hurry up a little.

The Audi R8 is one of the most praised sportscars in recent times. But this doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its flaws, like the rather annoying R-Tronic sequential gearbox, which doesn’t perform all that well in the stock 4.2-liter V8, while in the larger V10, it feels right at home.
According to Car and Driver, that’s going to change. Sources say that a more efficient seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will make an appearance on the entry-level car. Worries about the amount of power it can handle will likely keep it as an option for the V8, while the V10 will be keep the R-Tronic option.
But the sources aren’t done just yet. According to them, it seems a faster and lighter R8 V10 is in the making, much in the vein of the Superleggera models Lamborghini is constantly cranking out from its factory. Elements from the Le Mans R8 race cars might also be featured by the sportier model.
Also, for those of you wanting to feel the wind in your hair but don;t have the money for the V10 Spyder, a V8 version is also scheduled, according to the same sources.
All in all, if you postponed the purchase of an R8, you might want to wait a bit longer for some surprises.

Hispano Suiza, in case you haven’t heard, was a Spanish automaker specializing in bespoke products before the World War II. The name has been recently dug up by another company, which is preparing to make it famous once more.
How will it do such a thing? With a 750 HP customized Audi R8 V10. It seems that the company went to work quite seriously on the R8, adding a supercharger and many other modifications. The result? 750 HP propelling the German-born Spanish project from 0 to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds and up to 205 mph.
That’s not all, as besides the redesigned model, which you can see above and below, there are also a few rumors concerning the possibility of a hybrid powertrain. This means that the V10 engine might see the addition of a 150 HP electric motor, enabling it to go on EV mode for a specific distance.
We’re not so sure about the hybrid talks, but the renders seen above are very attractive, so we need to wait until next week to see what Hispano Suiza brings to the Geneva Motor Show.

Audi stunned the whole industry when it presented the R8 sportscar, showing you can have a sensible machine for your everyday needs that can turn into a powerful brute if you take in on the track or on the open road.
When the Stuttgart company presented the 5.2-liter V10 engine for it, things got even more hectic. Chop off the top and implement the Space Frame technology, and the car is nearing perfection in the eyes of many fans.

It looks like the Volkswagen Group really wants to take all the high performance coupe market, because yesterday the Audi R8 V10 was officially revealed. Powered by the 5.2 liter V10 engine from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, which delivers 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, the R8 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 316 km/h (196 mph). Audi claims that, equipped with the R tronic sequential gearbox, the car achieves an average fuel consumption of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg), which is not bad at all, considering its performance figures. However, as standard, the car comes equipped with a six speed manual transmission and, of course, quattro all-wheel drive system.
As you’d expect, the R8 V10 will come with a set of extra features comparing to the ‘regular’ R8: 19 inch exclusive 10-spoke Y design alloy wheels, all-LED headlights as standard, plus a few styling elements (more accentuated sideblades, wider side sills and matt aluminium look for the exhaust grilles). Also, the standard equipment list is very impressive: Fine Nappa leather heatable seat covers, a driver information system, navigation system and Bang & Olufsen sound system, deluxe automatic air conditioning, alarm system, instruments and gearshift knob decorated with red rings, while the footrests and the rocker switches of the R tronic have an aluminum finish. To see all the R8 V10′s features, check out the official press release.
The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro is scheduled to go on sale in Germany in the second quarter of 2009 at a starting price of 142,400 Euros.
