Theft System Problem – Car May Not Start

In the last few years car thefts have slowly but surely decreased in frequency since the new advancements in anti-theft systems technology. Today a new car can have several sensors that can detect any anomaly to the car’s structure or locks and so on. These systems are designed with the sole purpose of deterring and discouraging auto theft. Most of the time they do a very good job in protecting your car, but they also are quite temperamental when they start acting up. An anti theft system can put you in an embarrassing, or potentially harmful situation. On the other hand, the way an aftermarket system installed, affects greatly the system’s performance and the car’s normal behavior. If you have it installed by a professional, than you shouldn’t have problems with the system as long as it’s in perfect working condition. If you get a hack installer that start’s horsing around and splicing inside the electrical system, than my friend, expect a lot of embarrassing moments and a lot of unexpected problems that aren’t related to the anti theft system.

You may ask yourself: how can I disable an anti theft system if I can’t start my car? Well, in case you have a factory installed system than the answer is nearly impossible, at least not by yourself. Keep in mind that these systems were designed to keep thieves off your car, so if it were so easy, the thief would do it as well. Not to mention that if we were to explain in this article the machinations of a factory system, no car would be safe.

If you have an aftermarket system, and have the installation manual around, than you may be able to disable it yourself. Although it’s recommended that you take the car back to the installer and ask for a replacement (or better yet a refund and take your business elsewhere).

For example, if the anti theft lights start to flash and the alarm goes off when you try to start the car and the engine doesn’t budge, than you’re facing an anti theft problem. The system isn’t recognizing your key, or the entry signal. If so you need to get a representative to scan the system with a factory scan tool so that he can determine the source of the problem.

I case you’ve lost your keys, or the chip inside the key is faulty than you have to other choice than to get the system reprogrammed to identify the new entry signal, or the new keys, so be very careful since not all systems are reprogrammable.

Car Radiator Airlock Problem

If there’s one thing you need to make sure at all times whether you’re on the move with your car or your engine is simply idling, is that the engine needs to be kept cool at all times. For that to happen, the cooling system must be in perfect condition. Any obstruction could lead to an inefficient cooling which may result in engine overheating. That usually has catastrophic results, from exploding fuses to melted wires, resulting in a whole week in the shop, lots of headaches and a lot of money spent for nothing.

On of the main problems that usually occur in the cooling system is the phenomenon known as air lock, if this happens, here are a few steps to eliminate it, thus preventing further damage to your cooling system and engine. The cooling agent from the radiator keeps going in circles through the hoses, into the engine and then back into the radiator where it is cooled down, and so on. In a sealed system, coolant will circulate constantly with normal pressure. Sometime that pressure is no longer balanced when air gets trapped in the system and prevents the coolant from flowing constantly.

This may cause the thermostat to close or open incorrectly, or the water propeller to spin freely in a complete dry chamber. If any of these problems occur, are enough to permanently destroy your engine since overheating comes in a couple of minutes after the cooling system failed. Thankfully any vehicle owner can simply eliminate the air inside the radiator by following some steps.

If you see the engine’s temperature rising fast, park quickly somewhere and pull the emergency brake. Pop the hood open and remove the overflow cap. Fill the radiator up to its neck with coolant, than head for the overflow reservoir and fill that up as well, replace the caps and then turn on the engine and let the cooling system do its job.

Check out your car manual to see what kind of bleeder valve you have. It is easily spotted on the water box, since nearby is the thermostat. It will look like a small air bleeder bolt with a hex head fitting. Remove the bolt and fill up the reservoir to its limit and then you can head for the radiator. Watch carefully if any coolant escapes the bleeder hole. If you see coolant drops than you need to replace the bleeder bolt and the radiator cap.

If you don’t have any spilled coolant, than start the engine and let the engine reach its normal operating temperature, in order to get the thermostat to open. Continuously watch the bleeder hole as you pour coolant in the radiator. Stop when you see leaking coolant and then tighten the bleeder bolt.

The next step is a bit trickier so you need to check carefully for eventual bleeder holes. If you can’t see any holes than get a floor jack and lift the front of the car. Place the shift on neutral while making sure that the emergency brake is pulled. Than remove the radiator cap. Let the engine heat until the electric cooling fan activates. To make things faster, turn the interior heater to maximum, than pour coolant into the radiator and wait until it starts to bubble. Wait for the thermostat to open and heat the hose. In this moment the coolant level should drop as the trapped air is slowly leaving the cooling system with the boiling coolant. If you got here, congrats, you’ve just eliminated air from your cooling system.

If the car starts from the first try, than you’re dealing with a weakened and worn out battery that needs replacing.

On the other hand if you check the battery and it delivers optimum output yet still you have trouble starting (in the morning for example), than you need to head to the alternator. Since the alternator is the one charging the car while the engine is running (and Honda Alternators are not exactly the best, not by far), maybe you’re dealing with a poor charging from the alternator, which leaves the battery almost empty almost every ride, therefore unable to start the car unless you recharge the battery each time. If this is the case, than all you can do is to check the fan belt connected to the alternator, if it is loose than it may cause slipping and thus making the alternator work at less than full capacity, which naturally means that an inefficient energy flow is directed to the battery. If the belts are fine than you’d better head to a mechanic.

Another soft spot in Honda cars is the Ignition Switch. If your battery is ok and still no spark than maybe you’re dealing with a faulty ignition switch. A simple test can be done by rotating the key only halfway, just as much to turn on the electrical system. If the dashboard lights up and all controls come online than the switch is bad and needs replacing.
