If you remember, June was the month when the 2011 Nissan Leaf took the lead in the United States in EVs sales from the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Last month, the Japanese automaker managed to deliver 3,875 units of its Leaf model, despite the fact that the company had to face some serious problems caused by the tsunami and earthquake that struck Japan a few months ago, causing production delays.
In the meantime, Chevrolet sold 2,745 Volts in June and one reason of the lower sales numbers are due to the inventory levels that can’t meet the demand. This situation with the inventory is the direct consequence of the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant retooling where the EV is being built. After a month of production halt, this week Chevy began assembling the 2012MY Volt and Hamtramck promises to build 3,750 cars each month.
With a tripled production capacity, the plant should be able to roll out 45,000 units of the Volt each year.

OnStar connectivity will help Chevy Volt Customers reduce driving costs
• Smart grid solutions enable utilities to manage electric vehicle energy demands

RALEIGH, N.C. – General Motors and OnStar will launch the first real-world pilot of smart grid solutions for electric vehicles this year, paving the way for utilities to increase energy efficiency and offer lower charging costs to customers.
Starting this quarter, hundreds of employees of regional utilities will drive leased Chevrolet Volts as their everyday vehicles and participate in the pilot.
“In contrast to other OEMs who are only talking about smart grid technology, we’re moving beyond research and development projects to a program in the real world,” said Nick Pudar, OnStar vice president of planning and business development. “Through this pilot we will see real-time results on how intelligent energy management can maximize EV charging efficiency and minimize the electric bill for EV drivers.”
Many utility companies throughout the United States have implemented programs where customers opt in to allow the utility to stop and start their home air conditioning units as needed when electricity demand is high. The customer benefit from this service is a lower electricity bill. OnStar’s smart grid solution builds on this concept, but to a much more advanced and sophisticated level.
Through the OnStar Advanced Telematics Operations Management System (ATOMS), a utility will be able to accurately monitor and manage the energy used by the vehicles. The data will give the utility deep insight into where and when EVs are charged and demand response, which allows the utility to reduce peak demand by shifting EV charging to non-peak hours.
“OnStar is the only telematics provider that can create a wireless bridge between electric vehicles and the grid, building on our learning from the Chevrolet Volts on the road today,” Pudar said.
Through OnStar’s ATOMS infrastructure and partners’ solutions, utilities will be able to implement two Smart Grid services:
• Data Gathering. With customer permission, OnStar will provide the utility with overall charge level as well as charging history – by time and location – for the Volt pilot fleet, without the vehicles having to connect to a charging station. This will give the utility better insight for forecasting demand, setting rates and determining the best location for charging infrastructure.
• Demand response. OnStar will allow the utility to actively manage EV charging for those who opt in to the service. The utility can then reduce peak loads by offering discounts or other incentives to encourage drivers to charge their EVs when overall electricity demand is lowest, typically in the early morning hours.
OnStar, the automotive industry leader in telematics, first demonstrated EV data gathering and demand response in February at the DistribuTECH conference in San Diego. The Chevrolet Volt is now available in select U.S. markets and will be available nationwide by the end of the year.

If you live in United Kingdom and want to get your hands on the Chevrolet Volt, prepare to pay at least 28,454 pounds. The car will arrive at the dealerships in the beginning of next year. The announcement was made at the 2011 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the price tag includes the 5,000 pounds government grant that was created in order to increase the sales of green cars.
As you probably already know, the Chevrolet Volt has an electric driving range of up to 50 miles and after that, the 4-cylinder 1.4-liter gasoline engine kicks in and starts powering the vehicle. The automaker did not offer other details regarding the car but mentioned that all right-hand variants will come as standard with a leather interior cabin.
In other news, Chevy confirmed that the Camaro Convertible will hit the showrooms in United Kingdom in early 2012 and it will have a starting price of 34,995 pounds. Opting for the entry-level model will get you the one powered by a V8 6.2-liter engine that produces 426 hp. The North American automaker said that the suspension of the Camaro will be fine-tuned for the roads in UK.

2011 Chevrolet Volt in IIHS crash test
It was only a couple of weeks ago when the Chevrolet Volt got top ratings for crash safety and now the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave five stars to the car for overall vehicle safety. For those of you that don’t know, five stars is the maximum rating available.
To be more exact, the Volt earned five stars for side crash and rollover tests and four shiny stars for frontal collisions. NHTSA said the Chevrolet Volt comes as standard with electronic stability control, but it isn’t available with forward-collision warning or lane-departure. The agency increased the severity of the tests for the 2011MY cars due to the reason that lot of new models managed to do very well with the previous test regime.
These new modifications include the side-impact test that simulate a crash going on at 20 mph in a tree or a pole behind the windshield pillar on the driver’s side.
No word about NHTSA’s tests with the Nissan Leaf. We’ll keep you posted.

2011 Chevrolet Volt
Good news for those of you who are still waiting to buy a Chevrolet Volt as General Motors has announced that for the 2012 model, the Volt (along with the Opel Ampera) will be produced in 60,000 units and approximately 45,000 of them will be sold in the United States. In addition, GM will increase the production of this year’s model by 16,000 units.
The bad thing is that this production increase will not commence right away due to the reason that General Motors has shut down its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, where they assemble the Volt, so that it could be upgraded in order to prepare the factory for building the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.
You probably know that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is not available everywhere in the U.S. The states in which you can purchase one are: New York, California, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., Connecticut, Michigan, Maryland and New Jersey. The company has said that by the end of this year, the Volt will be available nationwide in the U.S., as well as in Canada, Europe and of course, China.

April is over so now we can look over the figures of EV sales in the United States. Last month, Nissan sold 573 Leafs while Chevrolet managed to deliver 493 units of its Volt model, which means that since January, 1,025 Leafs were sold and 1,703 Volts.
Back in December 2010, when each of these two models came on sale, people bought 19 Leafs and 326 Volts. The very first Nissan Leaf was delivered on December 12th, and three days later, the first Chevrolet Volt was sold.
Chevrolet had said that the company’s April total would be a little bit lower in comparison to the 608 units sold in March, due to the reason that they’ve diverted cars that might otherwise have been delivered to paying customers in order to provide more dealers with demonstration vehicles. This trend might not end in the following eager if we take into consideration the difficulty Nissan faces in resuming full-scale production of its various cars made in Japan, including the Leaf. Until early 2013, all the Leafs targeted for the United States market are going to be manufactured at Nissan’s plant in Oppama, Japan.
Chevrolet stated that they will sell approximately 10,000 Volts this year, just about the same as Nissan with its award-winning Leaf model.
Up until now, Chevy managed to sell a total of 2,029 Volts, making it the best-selling highway-capable electric vehicle in the United States, surpassing the estimated total delivers of 1,650 units for the Tesla Roadster since it went on sale in late 2008.

Yesterday, General Motors has started taking orders for its Chevrolet Volt, a car that has a base price of CA$41,545. At first, the extended range electric vehicle is going to be available in Vancouver, Toronto, Victoria, Montreal, Quebec City, Oshawa and Ottawa-Gatineau. First delivers of the Volt will occur in Q3 2011. GM Canada said that within a year of the retail launch, the car will be available at all dealerships across Canada.
The Chevy Volt will be sold in only a single trim level, and customers will be able to add two optional packages: a Rear Camera and Park Assist Package, and a Premium Trim Package. It will be sold with a 3-year / 60,000 km bumper-to-bumper coverage and a 5-year / 160,000 km roadside assistance. General Motors also throws in an 8-year / 160,000 km limited warranty for the 16 kWh lithium-ion battery.
As a reminder, the Chevrolet Volt is powered by an electric motor that is fed by the aforementioned battery, and can be driven in electric mode for up to 80 km. After the battery is drained, the conventional 1.4-liter gasoline engine kicks in and acts as a generator, providing an extended driving range of up to 500 km with a full tank of gas.

Nowadays, the environment has been brought in our attention, especially because of pollution and that’s why the car manufacturers have been trying to develop eco-friendly cars which can offer comfort, space and speed at a reasonable price. And Chevrolet is one of these car brands which really succeeded in manufacturing incredible hybrid cars at amazing prices. We all heard about the release of the Chevrolet Volt, release which was a great success for this company. But a new star of the eco-friendly car niche made its appearance this year and I think that in the next years we will be impressed by the future eco-friendly cars that will be manufactured.
General Motors has unveiled an interesting Chevrolet Hybrid at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show, a concept car which is the creation of the South Korean subsidiary. It’s a sporty car which combines luxury with a “mid-electric” hybrid power train, being able to run on electric front–wheel drive or tap a gasoline engine for the rear wheels. This Chevrolet Hybrid took home the award for “the best new concept car” because of its aggressive styling and its electric propulsion system.
The new Chevrolet Hybrid was named Chevrolet Mi-ray which means in Korean “future” and it’s a compact open roadster made from carbon fiber with an aluminum chassis that ensures a lightweight performance. The Mi-ray is equipped with aluminum-carbon fiber composite 20-inch wheels in the front and 21 inch-wheels in the back. An interesting thing about this Chevrolet hybrid is its doors. You will have the opportunity to see a Chevrolet car using the well known Lamborghini scissor doors. Moreover, the dual port grille is flanked by LED headlights with daytime running lamps. The designers created amazing front and rear fenders which evoke the incredible look of the past Chevrolet Corvettes while the spoilers placed in the rear corners (which are made of carbon fiber) were designed to help control the downforce and the airflow.
Inside, this Chevrolet hybrid has asymmetrically positioned seats while the start button is placed in the center similar to those used in the jet aircrafts. The interior uses a combination of leather, brushed aluminum, white fabric and liquid metal surfaces. The instrumental panel is designed to use back projection and prioritizes information in three zones to help the driver. The Chevrolet Hybrid uses retractable cameras that electrically extend from the side glass. The Mi-ray features a forward-facing camera as well, which along with the GPS overlay the navigation information on real-time video.
Under the hood, the car hides two front-mounted 15 kilowatt electric motors which help the driver accelerate very quickly while zero emissions are released. The motors are equipped with a 1.6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery which can be charged through regenerative braking energy. The mid-electric power train is mounted behind and beneath the driver. As a result, the performance and the fuel economy are increased. This Chevrolet Hybrid is also equipped with a 1.5 liter four-cylinder turbocharger engine which can be used when an extra power is needed. This engine is especially designed to drive the rear wheels and has a dual-clutch transmission for fast shifting and to improve the fuel efficiency. This Chevrolet Hybrid gets 60 mpg when you drive in the city and 63 mpg on the highway.
The Chevrolet Mi-ray was designed to celebrate the Chevrolet’s centennial anniversary and I think that it was the best gift for such a well known car brand. The Chevrolet Mi-ray is truly an example for the perfect future car and I can’t wait to see it on the road as soon as possible

Each car manufacturer tries to impress its admirers by releasing new and more sophisticated cars. Chevrolet is one of these companies and in 2010 it released its future plans that will bring something new on the car market. The general idea is that the company is trying to match the design of the new Chevrolet cars with the impressive Equinox crossover and the Camaro muscle car. Chevrolet is preparing to raise the federal fuel economy requirements by placing the V6 engine lower, adding more engines with four cylinders and redesigning the small cars.
The list of cars that will suffer some changes from 2011 to 2013 is pretty large, but trust me when I say that the happiest will be the buyers because they will have cars that will bring them more comfort and a lower fuel consumption.
2011 is the year when the new Chevrolet cars are expected to impress the buyers and to become leaders on the car market. One of these cars is the Chevrolet Cruze that will appear in the US showrooms in September as a replacement for the Cobalt. The European and Asian buyers already enjoy driving this four doors compact car. Another car that will suffer some changes in 2011 is the Aveo that will be redesigned becoming wider and longer than the current Aveo. This mini-car will be available as a five-door hatchback and as a four-door sedan. The company expects the new Aveo to be manufactured in 70,000 units each year.
The GM hopes that the new Hybrid car, the Volt will reach impressive sales in 2011 (10,000 units) with numbers increasing in 2012. The new Chevrolet cars list for 2011 ends with the Silverado 2500 and 3500 which will be available with a new engine. But 2014 and 2015 will be the years when this heavy-duty pickup will suffer a complete redesign and will become available in the compressed-natural-gas version.
2012 is the year when the Chevrolet Colorado “retires” and the GM might reintroduce a compact pickup. But the sixth generation of the Colorado will be sold outside the US having a smaller design similar to the Chevrolet Montana design (Brazil version). The Chevrolet Camaro will be also released in 2012 as a convertible model. But a major change of the Camaro is planned for the 2015 model when a smaller type of platform (the Alpha platform) will be used.
Part of the list is the Malibu as well, which will be equipped with a redesigned engine. The car will be revealed in 2012 as a 2013 model and will feature a new direct injection engine with four cylinders, a larger trunk, a shorter wheelbase and a shorter Epsilon platform. Last but not least on the 2012 list is the desire of GM to release a natural-gas-powered version of the Silverado 1500 while for the 2014 model this Silverado will be equipped with a new engine and will have a new design.
The Chevrolet will continue its plans for the new Chevrolet cars in 2013 when the Traverse will get a new look and a new 3.0 liters V6 engine. The redesigned Corvette will be available on the market as well celebrating the sports car’s 60th Anniversary. It’s very likely that the new Corvette will be released as a 2014 model equipped with a turbocharger V6 combined with a V8 engine. The Chevrolet Impala will be also redesigned as a 2014 model and the designers will use a longer Epsilon platform, a shorter front and rear overhangs to lower the weight.

Chevrolet Volt Outsells Nissan Leaf, Again
The 2011 Chevrolet Volt has managed yet again to outsell the 2011 Nissan Leaf. The good news for the Japanese automaker is that they’ve managed to sell almost five times more Leaf in comparison to February, but they still are far behind Chevrolet. In March, there were 906 plug-in cars sold: 608 Volts and 298 Leafs, which is a lot more from February’s sales of 281 and 67, respectively.

The new Chevrolet Hybrid is available on the US market since December 2010. The car’s name is Chevrolet Volt and it is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle produced by General Motors. The Chevrolet Volt is the newest type of electric car that is functional a long time because of its internal combustion generator.
If the first Chevrolet Volt had four doors and a top speed of 130 km/h, the new one is a two seats sports car. The first model manufactured and revealed to the public in 2008 suffered great changes, the new design being different from the original concept car. During two years Chevrolet’s engineers made improvements on the technical components and tested the combination between the lithium-ion battery pack and the non-turbocharged 1.4 liter engine. Even if the team had a short period of time to take care of all the details in order to create this hybrid it is a success.
Because of the Voltec propulsion system, this Chevrolet Hybrid can deliver 25 to 50 miles of all-electric driving with a single charge before the gasoline generator kicks in to supply electricity to power the engine for another 300 miles. The officials say that a full charge takes only eight hours from a standard North American 120 V and only three hours from a 240 VAC outlet.
The 1.4 liter engine RPO LUU with 4 cylinders produces 80 horsepower using premium gasoline. The GM Company is also developing an E85 flex-fuel Volt version that will be available in 2013. The Chevrolet Volt’s speed ranges between 30 and 70 miles per hour. After the electric range is depleted, the car can select the most appropriate drive mode from the two possible. This way, it improves the performance and the high speed efficiency with 15 percent. An interesting feature of the Chevrolet Hybrid is the sealed and pressurized fuel tank that avoids the evaporation of gasoline.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt has three drive modes: normal, sport and mountain. The last drive mode needs only an increased minimum battery state of charge of 45% that helps it “fight” against the unusual conditions. The engine’s noise will increase in this situation, because of the necessity of an additional power.
The hybrid car features a smart phone application that helps the driver to check the fuel efficiency and the electric range of the car. This application intends to control the locking/unlocking door process and to act as a remote starter of the car.
But the most important thing about a hybrid car is fuel consumption and the tailpipe emissions. According with the EPA ratings, the Volt tailpipe emission is of 84 grams of carbon dioxide/mile. Because of that the Chevrolet Hybrid beats the Toyota Prius when it comes to low greenhouse emissions. Moreover, the Chevrolet Volt provides fuel economy in the electric mode as well as in the gasoline mode.
As a reward for all the efforts made by the GM team to release this “green” car, the Chevrolet Volt was awarded a lot of prizes, such as the one from the Green Car Journal that named the 2011 Chevrolet Volt “The Green Car of the Year”, even if it competed with the Ford Fiesta, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and the Nissan LEAF or the prize from the Automobile Magazine that named it the “2011 Automobile of the Year”.

We’ve talked about the Chevrolet Volt plenty of times here on rpmGO and although we do agree that it is a very important car for the automotive industry, its $41,000 price tag makes it quite expensive for a four-seater. The good news is that according to some rumors, General Motors is working on a “baby” Volt that will come with a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery, making the car cheaper and smaller.
Although nothing is certain at the moment, the entry-level model will have a price tag of about $31,000 (before the government incentives) and it will be able to travel on electricity mode only 20 miles (31 km), in comparison to the current model that will do from 25 to 50 miles (40 to 80 km).

This new more affordable model would compete with the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid that can do 12.5 miles / 20 km and with the Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid that can do 15 miles / 24 km, both cars that have a similar price tag with the baby Volt.

It seems that Chevrolet has plans of introducing their Volt model in all 50 states by the end of this year. The U.S. president of Chevrolet Marketing, Rick Scheidt said that “this is the right thing to do for our customers and our dealers who are seeing increased traffic onto their showroom floors.”
Up until now, the Volt has been delivered to clients living in the Washington D.C. area, New York, Texas, New Jersey, California and Connecticut. Pretty soon, Chevrolet will start shipping the car in Michigan. Starting with the third quarter of this year, the Volt will be available to the citizens living in: Oregon, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
As we previously mentioned in earlier posts, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt comes with a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor that outputs 149 hp (151 PS / 111 kW) and 273 lb-ft (368 Nm) of torque. These figures allow the car to reach 60 mph in less than 9 seconds, onto a top speed of 100 mph.
The Volt is capable of running on electric mode for 35 miles and with the conventional 1.4-liter petrol engine it can do 344 miles.
Recently, General Motors withdrew their loan application from the United States Department of Energy. The $14.4 billion would have been used by the automaker to start making more fuel efficient cars, but GM said that finances have improved last year and they won’t need that loan after all.

The Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle will use a motor to power itself, and a 1.4-liter range extending internal combustion engine if the batteries run out of juice after 40 miles.
But what happens when you average drive takes less than that and you end up not using the IC engine or the gas from the tank? Chevrolet engineers thought of this situation, and have installed a few systems to alert the driver to take the car past its electric only range, so that the gasoline and the engine will be used in order to prevent aging or deterioration.
If the driver doesn’t do that, the Volt will enter a special maintenance mode, where the IC engine will be used. This will consume some of the gasoline in the tank and keep the fluids going in the engine bay.
It’s also worth pointing out that the Volt has a special pressurized gas tank, which keep the fuel from evaporating as fast as a regular one. This means that the gas will last longer and won’t age that fast.
The Chevrolet Volt is scheduled to appear in certain territories in November, and will be rolled out across the USA next year.
