Skoda Belgium offers a Fabia on Facebook in new campaign

Skoda Belgium offers a Fabia on Facebook in new campaign

Facebook is quickly becoming a serious weapon in promoting new cars. We’ve seen Mazda feature its new Mazda2 in a special game for the social network, while Ford has used it to unveil the 2011 Explorer SUV.

Now, Skoda Belgium has decided to offer a new Fabia Rock edition as a prize in a brand new campaign, centered around Facebook.

Basically (given our intermediate French skills), if people give 1 Like to the Skoda Belgium fan page, 1 Euro gets deducted from the price of the Fabia (12.950 Euros).

For two days people can like the Skoda Belgium page, share the news with others, and then place a bid for the Skoda Fabia Rock edition. The more likes, the less money you will have to pay for the car.

Currently a bid has already been placed, so Skoda is analyzing it. But if it gets turned down, you’ll need to place your own as soon as possible.

Overall, this is a pretty interesting campaign, and it gets a lot of props for originality. While you’re still on Facebook, why don’t you like our own website. We won’t give away a car (not yet, anyway) but you’ll be able to stay up to date with the latest news from our website.

Gran Turismo 5 offers real life Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG if you buy the Signature Edition

Continuing the gaming theme we had all week, this time we’re talking about what might be the game to beat in the racing genre this year: Gran Turismo 5.

After checking out the special GT5 Collector’s Edition at this year’s E3 conference in Los Angeles, the development team at Polyphony Digital has just revealed an even more exclusive Gran Turismo 5 Signature Edition.

So, what will you be getting with this special edition? Besides the actual game, you’ll get your hands on things like:

The price for the Gran Turismo 5 Signature Edition? ‘Just’ €179.99 ($240). While that may be a bit too expensive for some, Sony is adding a special type of competition for all those who purchase this version of the game.

Ford is kicking its marketing campaign for the new Fiesta compact into overdrive, just as the model is appearing in Blue Oval dealerships around the USA.

In order to highlight the sporty nature of the new Fiesta, Ford went to famous rally driver and stunt man Ken Block, and tasked him with completing a few everyday errands such as taking out the trash, going grocery shopping or delivering mail.

As you can imagine, he isn’t using a regular Fiesta for all these tasks, instead relying on his custom Ford Fiesta rally car. Needless to say, hilarity and awesomeness followed.

Still, the ad doesn’t just promote the new Fiesta, but also a novel competition, entitled ‘Rock it like Block’. Fans will need to access this special website, and enter for a chance to win a special Fiesta, customized by Block himself. While it most definitely won’t be the Gymkhana Three Fiesta, it will still be awesome.

Hit the jump to check out the new Ken Block ad, and then enter in the competition.

2011 Mazda2 gets promoted through Facebook game DriverVille

2011 Mazda2 gets promoted through Facebook game DriverVille

Ford isn’t the only automaker trying to get in touch with the cool kids through social media websites like Facebook or Twitter, as Mazda has also revealed it is ‘hip’ (or whatever the kids are calling it these days) with the social movement.

The Japanese company decided to use a bold new way of promoting the 2011 Mazda2 compact: a dedicated Facebook game called DriverVille.

The application was developed by Frima, a Facebook game developer, and concentrates on you building your own street racer and customizing your ride in order to race against friends. Think of it as a Need For Speed for Facebook.

As you can imagine, it targets more casual gamers and Facebook users, like those who are already into other apps like FarmVille. It also heavily promotes the Mazda2, as well as the racing endeavors of the Japanese team.

More importantly however, besides the fun aspect of the game, is that the company is also holding sweepstakes, with prizes like 64GB iPod Touch devices, as well as the grand one, a new 2011 Mazda2.

If you want to check out DriverVille, as well as read more details about the competition, check out Mazda’s official Facebook page. While you’re at it, don’t forget to ‘Like’ our own RPMGO Facebook page (see what we did there?).

Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter TSI is the 2010 International Engine of the Year

Volkswagen's 1.4-liter TSI is the 2010 International Engine of the Year

In the car industry, awards are pretty important, as they showcase the best vehicles or technologies developed by a company and, hopefully, help buying a car that much simpler.

Now, after seeing a plethora of competitions like the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year, the 2010 European Car of the Year and, most importantly, the 2010 World Car of the Year, another contest has named its winners.

The 2010 International Engine of the Year competition has named Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter TSI as the best engine of the year. The twincharged unit, which is used on everything from the Volkswagen Polo GTI to the Seat Ibiza Cupra or Volkswagen Tiguan, has also won the award in 2009. This year, as expected, it has also secured victory in the 1 to 1.4 liter category.

In 2010 though, Toyota’s new 1.8-liter engine, used with the hybrid synergy drive technology in cars like the Prius or the Auris hybrid, has earned the Green engine of the Year award, beating Volkswagen.

The best new engine of the year was handed to Fiat, with its new 1.4-liter MultiAir, which is used on the new Alfa Romeo MiTo and the Giulietta.

Starting from smallest to biggest, here are the rest of the winners.

The under 1 liter category was won by Toyota’s 1-liter engine, which sees action with the Aygo, iQ, Yaris but also the Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1.

The 1.4 to 1.8-liter category was won by the fabulous 1.6-liter turbocharged unit, developed by BMW with Peugeot Citroen, which is used by the Mini Cooper S, as well as the Peugeot 207 or 308.

The 1.8 to 2.0-liter category was won by BMW itself, thanks to the twin-turbo 2.0-liter diesel, which sees service in cars like the 123d or the X1 xDrive23d.

The 2 to 2.5-liter category saw the award go to Audi and its turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, which can be see under the bonnet of the TT RS.

The 2.5 to 3.0-liter award went to BMW’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine, currently found in any model with the 35i name, from the 1 Series to the X6.

The 3.0 to 4-liter category also went to BMW, this time for the stunning 4.0-liter engine that powers the M3.

The above 4.0-liter category and, at the same time, the best performance engine was Mercedes-Benz’s massive 6.2-liter AMG unit, currently serving the best of the best of what MB can offer.

Video: Mini still wants to race Porsche, ups the ante with new prizes

Last week, Mini USA launched a very public challenge to Porsche USA, in order to race the Cooper S against a 911 sportscar, at the Road Atlanta circuit.

At the time, Mini boss Jim McDowell challenged Porsche boss Detlev Von Platen with things like special T-Shirts and media attention.

Sadly, Porsche has declined the challenge, inviting Mini to compete against it in true race events, and not in special competitions.

Now, Mini is back with a new video. In it, McDowell ups the ante for Porsche by offering things like Justin Bieber concert tickets, a lifetime membership in the Salami of the Month Club, or even a (slightly used) gym.

The whole video is hilarious, so hit the jump and check it out. Hopefully someone at Porsche will also realize how fun this challenge might be and will take part in it.

Ken Block reveals the Gymkhana Grid and Ken Block Invitational competitions

Ken Block reveals the Gymkhana Grid and Ken Block Invitational competition

Ken Block is now a household name, both in the US and abroad, thanks to his extremely impressive Gymkhana videos, where he took his Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car and effectively went all out, drifting, power sliding and doing all sorts of crazy things in specially designed locations.

Now, Block wants to turn Gymkhana into an actual motorsport, and has announced the Gymkhana Grid and the Ken Block Invitational competitions.

Set to take place on December 3 and 4, at the Toyota International Speedway, in Irwindale, the competition will see some of the best racing drivers out there try to beat Block in a special course designed to squeeze every ounce of skill and power from both driver and machine.

Needless to say, it’s going to be one heck of a show. No other details are known, but you can check out the splash page for the competition. Until then, look forward to the upcoming Gymkhana Three video to appear this summer, starring Block and a 600 HP Ford Fiesta rally car.

Volkswagen confirms interest in Formula 1

Volkswagen confirms interest in Formula 1

After plenty of rumors and speculations, former performance driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, now Volkswagen‘s motorsport representative, has confirmed that the German company is interested in the Formula 1 competition.

Before you think a new team will emerge, the official followed up, saying it will only supply engines to competing teams, and won’t go the same route Mercedes-Benz did, which formed its own GP team this season.

At the same time, Volkswagen did say it is still waiting on a decision from the FIA, F1′s ruling body, on what new type of engines will be adopted in 2013. As you all know, the current 2.4-liter V8 units might be replaced with smaller, turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines, in order to increase efficiency and lower emissions.

Still, this news should definitely make a lot of fans happy, as it will (hopefully) lead to a more exciting Formula 1 championship.

2010 European Car of the Year finalists have been announced

2010 European Car of the Year finalists have been announced

While Car of the Year competitions may not be everyone’s cup of tea, they are definitely a sign that its participants do offer some of the best experiences you can have on four wheels.

We’ve already revealed the list of finalists for the North American car and truck of the year competitions, and now the European version of the contest has also chosen its seven cars which will fight over the Car of the Year award.

They are:
-Citroën C3 Picasso
-Mercedes-Benz E-class
-Opel/Vauxhall Astra
-Peugeot 3008
-Skoda Yeti
-Toyota iQ
-Volkswagen Polo.

There will be 58 jurors from 22 countries, who will cast their vote until November 27 and proclaim the winner on November 30.

Considering both the fact that last year’s winner was the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, and that our own Car of the Year contest held in Romania (at which our sister site AutoMOD participated) chose the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, the German model is a safe bet for this year’s competition.

What’s your favorite model out of these seven? Leave a comment with your pick.

Win a Tesla Roadster with the Dark Void video game contest

Well this is certainly interesting, Japanese games developer and publisher Capcom is certainly pulling out all the stops in order to promote its upcoming Dark Void video game. The company is taking it as far as holding a contest for which the grand prizes are either a Tesla Roadster, costing about $109,000, or a jet pack.

All you need to do is to head on over to the website of the competition, and, from what I could tell, fill in a contact form. You do need to be a resident of the United States though. Besides the guy or gal who will be walking away with the car, Capcom will also be choosing five more contestants and taking them on an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2010 so that they can ride in a Tesla Roadster with the development team of Dark Void, a futuristic third person shooter set to be released at the beginning of 2010 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Enjoy the hilarious video promoting this campaign below.
