Chevrolet is continuing its long strain of reveals before the start of the Paris Motor Show at the end of the month. After showcasing the new Orlando MPV and the Cruze hatchback, the new 2011 Chevrolet Aveo has finally been revealed.
As you can see, the new compact hatchback is quite a looker, even though its design was leaked in a few renders and patent sketches. The new generation Aveo promises to start clean and, thanks to a new and enlarged platform, will provide adequate space for anyone in the market for a small hatchback.
The new model will also be pretty potent, considering the engine lineup it will get for the European market. The smallest is a 70 HP 1.2-liter gasoline, and the largest is a 115 HP 1.6-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine. Diesel fans will also be able to enjoy two versions of a 1.3-liter unit, capable of 75 and 95 HP, both equipped with Stop/Start systems. Manual five- and six-speed gearboxes are available, while the 1.6-liter gets a six-speed automatic as an option.
The Chevrolet Aveo set to be revealed in Paris will be a show car, as modifications will be made for each market the tiny compact will be sold in. Expect it to debut on the US one around the end of next year, in both hatchback and sedan form, in order to rival the Ford Fiesta.

Even though the start of the Paris Motor Show is a few weeks away, Opel and Vauxhall have decided to showcase the first sketches of the GTC Paris Concept.
The model, as you can see above, is basically a teaser of the upcoming three-door version of the new Astra hatchback. The Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC will be making an appearance in showrooms at the beginning of next year.
As you can see, the GTC Paris concept showcases some extremely aggressive lines, especially on the side, where big creases create the illusion of side skirts. The arched rear inspires performance, but Opel insists that it will offer ample space for the people inside.
Expect the production Astra GTC, whether it’s badged as an Opel or a Vauxhall, to borrow plenty of styling cues from this concept, but tone some of them down, including the 21-inch wheels.
Expect more details about this new concept when the Paris Motor Show will open its doors. Until then, check it out in the photo gallery below.

Chevrolet is keen on expanding the Cruze lineup in Europe, where the compact model has achieved impressive sales.
As such, the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback show car has been officially revealed before it will be making its debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, later this month.
The model is just for show, at this moment, meaning the end version of the Cruze hatchback won’t necessarily look like this.
Still, the overall aspect will remain the same. It is expected for the Cruze five-door to compete against the likes of the Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf, but will add a bit more utility, given its bigger platform.
The production-ready Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be officially unveiled next year, with sales due to begin in summer of 2011. Pricing will also be unveiled at that time, and engine options are expected to remain the same.
Sadly, you won’t be getting to see this pretty attractive hatch on US soil, as American customers aren’t exactly pleased with such hatchbacks. You’ll just have to take satisfaction with the regular Cruze sedan.

Alfa Romeo‘s new model, the Giulietta hatchback, has already impressed a lot of people with its sleek design and promise of a fast, reliable and stylish means of transportation.
Now, according to a new report from Italy, Alfa might be preparing a coupe version of the Giulietta, which might resurrect the Sprint badge from the automaker’s past.
For those of you that don’t remember, in the 1950s, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint was introduced, with a coupe notchback design, similar to what you see in the unofficial illustration above. The Sprint badge then designated a more conventional three-door coupe in the 1980s.
For today’s market though, we’re pretty confident that Alfa Romeo will keep the hatchback design, and just remove two extra doors from the existing Giulietta, in order to turn it into a Sprint version.
Still, all of this is just speculation, so until your hear it straight from Alfa or Fiat, the five-door hatch is still the best (and only) choice.

After yesterday’s big leak of the Volkswagen Jetta Coupe, a new set of patent photos showcase another future model, the next generation Chevrolet Aveo.
As you can see above and below, GM has trademarked both the hatchback and the sedan versions of the 2012 Aveo with the US Patent Office.
Basically the two versions retain much of what we saw on the Aveo RS concept in Detroit and on the official photo of the sedan, afterwards.
The design is much more aggressive, in the vein of the upcoming Cruze sedan. The new Aveo will compete with the likes of the Fiesta, and pack a wide array of upgrades over the current generation, which, suffice to say, isn’t winning any awards.
We can expect the new Chevrolet Aveo to be showcased at the Paris Motor Show this fall, or at the LA Auto Show at the end of the year.

Hatchbacks are extremely popular in certain territories, like Europe. But other countries always bear a remarkable grudge against these shorter models. As such, carmakers are forced to derive sedans out of hatchbacks, resulting in the so-called notchbacks.
The latest model to join the group is the Volkswagen Polo, recently named both the European and the World Car of the Year. The attractive compact hatch has now been revealed as the 2011 Volkswagen Polo Sedan in Russia.
While it is being billed as a model specifically made for the Russian market, it won’t stay there for long, as it will definitely make its way onto US shores in the near future. Why? Because Americans don’t want to touch hatchbacks even with a ten foot pole, but also because VW wants to increase sales.
The Russian Polo Sedan has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, capable of 103 HP. We can expect the same engine, or a smaller but turbocharged TSI unit to appear on the US version.

After much speculation, the new 2011 Citroen C4 has been unveiled by the French company. While its debut is still scheduled for the Paris Motor Show in September, these first official photos will be welcomed by fans.
First off, while Citroen is hyping up the C4 as a all-new model, it still sits on a modified version of the old model’s chassis and will retain many of the engines used by its predecessor.
Still, its new design and the fact that it will only be offered as a five-door hatchback will satisfy a lot of people. The style of the new C4 borrows heavily from the bigger C5 as well as from the DS High Rider concept we saw at the beginning of the year in Geneva.
Unlike its predecessor, the 2011 C4 will arrive only as a hatch and targets models like the Volkswagen Golf or Ford Focus. It will employ a fresh design combined with increased utility. While the former C4 featured some extravagant options, the new one is a bit more conservative.
Still, even if you won’t have a central-mounted display, you will be able to change the background light for the new dashboard as well as customize plenty of accessories. The steering wheel no longer has a fixed center, but Citroen knows that won’t affect many potential buyers.
As we revealed above, the engine lineup will be almost the same as the outgoing C4, but will see the addition of the first e-HDi diesel-electric hybrid system. According to sources, it will use an electric motor, combined with the 1.6-liter HDI unit, to achieve around 109 g/km of CO2 emissions and an impressive fuel average.
Even if it isn’t as funky as its predecessor, we really like the new 2011 Citroen C4. What about you? Check out the photo gallery below and then cast your verdict on this new French hatch.

2011 Buick Regal might get wagon and hatchback variants plus diesel engine
The 2011 Buick Regal is quickly becoming the turning point for the Tri-Shield brand and a bold experiment for General Motors.
It seems that the badge-engineered Opel Insignia will share a lot of things with its European cousin. We’ve seen the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the six-speed manual confirmed for the upcoming Regal, but some even bigger news have now been revealed by Car and Driver.
According to the magazine, the Regal will also receive the two other body styles of the Insignia, a slightly shorter five door hatchback form and a full pledged wagon version. While both are rumored to join the sedan at one point in time, we don’t know how much customers are going to have to wait.
Besides the new body forms, a special treat is prepared to US diesel fans, as such a unit will make its way onto the Regal in the future. No figures were given, but it will certainly boost the green credentials, alongside the flex-fuel capable gasoline engines.
Factor in the performance oriented Regal GS, and the new Buick model is set to really blow away the competition. What do you think? Share your thoughts below.

MG presents Zero concept in Beijing
British brand MG, now part of the Chinese consortium SAIC, revealed at last week’s Beijing Motor Show a brand new concept.
As you can see above, it isn’t one of the famous roadsters that made the company so well known, but a small compact hatchback model, a bit too similar with the new Ford Fiesta, if you ask us.
Either way, the MG Zero concept hatchback previews a future entry from the brand onto this tough segment. The design was penned in the UK by Anthony Williams, and aims at capturing the interest of a worldwide audience, not just in Europe or Asia.
On the inside we can find quite a lot of futuristic technologies, including the floating center console complete with a plethora of touch screen controls. No other details about engines or when we shall see the MG Zero concept roll off the assembly line were given, so don’t hold your breath anytime soon.

After revealing just a few details in the last few months, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta hatchback has finally been detailed completely by the Italian carmaker.
Set to hit the European market soon enough, the new hatch will take the fight to rivals like the Volkswagen Golf or the Ford Focus by combining entry-level C segment price with quality found on the premium models like the Audi A3 or the BMW 1 Series.
The car is going to be the centerpiece of Alfa’s resurrection, which began with the MiTo compact some time ago. The Giulietta, as you can clearly see, sports the new design line premiered on the 8C Competizione supercar and will use a new platform that will be shared among the Fiat and Chrysler group. If it will become popular, the Italian hatch might even make it stateside in the future. If not, at least its platform will be put to good use by Chrysler.
The engines are also going to be swapped around the Fiat group, with the Giulietta using two 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engines, one developing 120 HP while the other, with the help of Fiat’s MultiAir variable valve technology, will develop 170 HP. Two turbodiesel units are also going to appear, a 105 HP 1.6-liter and a 170 HP 2.0-liter unit. Performance fans are going to get a Quadrifoglio Verde (Cloverleaf) edition packing a direct injection turbocharged 1.8-liter gasoline engine capable of 235 HP and coupled to a dual-clutch gearbox. The regular engines will only be available with six-speed manuals.

Nissan has just revealed, through the voice of its senior vice president, Andy Palmer, that it wants to create another C segment model, targeted at the most popular contender, the Volkswagen Golf.
This is all part of Nissan’s plan to be present in 90% of the current global market. It is currently occupying only 84%, and has expressed its desire to build on the presence of the existing hatchback model, the Almera (pictured above).
“To date, we have grown by circumnavigating the competition very successfully with cars like the Qashqai, but to go further we will have to tackle the market head on,” he said. “The C segment is an obvious growth area. The Qashqai and Juke will take sales in that market, but tackling it head on means building a car that is better than the VW Golf. That’s the challenge we have set ourselves. That project is a long term goal, but it is underway.”
Without a doubt the Nissan Juke compact crossover will definitely be an odd presence in the C segment, but if it truly wants to take down the VW Golf, it needs a proper hatchback, catered for a broader audience, unlike the Juke’s young, single, urban niche.
Do you think the Japanese company has what it takes to release a worthy rival for cars like the Golf or the Focus? Share your thoughts below.
