Set to be unveiled this week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Ford’s new B-MAX concept model has a very interesting door concept that features an integrated B-pillar construction and twin sliding doors. The automaker said that this new door concept of the B-MAX is ready for mass production. The concept previews the automaker’s upcoming small MPV, designed in order to replace the current European-spec Fusion model and rival the Opel Meriva.
This almost production-ready minivan is based on the Fiesta platform and by eliminating the traditional B- pillar; the automaker said that the car will provide the best-in-class access to the cabin without having to compromise safety. With both front and rear doors open, the aperture measure 1.5 meters, which is about twice in comparison to what competitors have to offer, according to Ford.
The minivan measures a little over 4 meters in length and is 110 mm longer and 110 mm taller than the 5-door Fiesta hatchback. The company said that the B-MAX will provide enough room inside for five passengers. The rear seats can be folded 60/40 and by doing so, the minivan can provide a flat load floor that can extend up to 2.35 meters in length when the front passenger seat is also folded.
Under the hood there is an all-new 3-cylinder 1.0-liter that benefits from the EcoBoost technology and features the company’s auto start/stop system. This power unit uses direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin variable cam timing, managing to achieve significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. At the moment, this engine is in its final development stage and it will replace the larger conventional 4-cyinder power units in the near future.
The production version of the Ford B-MAX will be launched in the next two years.

From start we should say that the 2011 Honda Odyssey doesn’t look like a traditional minivan and it seems that it has borrowed a couple of styling ideas from the Civic model, dropping the Accord Crosstour-inspired styling which wasn’t that great. Although the front and back of the car don’t do mate up well in profile, take them individually and you have a pretty good looking front and rear appearance. The flying buttress D-pillar aids the rear end of the car achieve a more contemporary appearance, similar to those of the crossovers.
The engineers at Honda really wanted to make the back of the car more entertaining and have come up with a bunch of new features for the rear-seaters. The first one would have to be that the third row of the Odyssey has two sets of LATCH anchors while the second row can have three sets. Unlike Chrysler, Honda didn’t use the seats folding into the floor technology as they think that there are rare situations in which we would need a minivan to act like a pickup truck. Instead, the Japanese automaker developed a system that allows the second row seats to be moved laterally in order to make room for passengers or car seats while at the same time improving the third-row access through the center. In addition, that optional second-row-center seat can be moved upfront so that an infant car seat can be placed closer to its parents.
The cockpit of the Odyssey is pretty similar to other Honda and Acura models we have seen before. The one thing that we don’t like about it is the fact that the climate controls are located above those for the navigation and audio systems, a huge error taking into consideration that most of us set an automatic temperature level and after that we barely look at it.
The minivan has been fitted with a V6 3.5-liter that outputs 248 hp and a 250 pound-feet of torque. The engine revs quickly and offers a terrific throttle response plus Honda did a very good job matching the gear’s ratios of the all-new (optional) 6-speed automatic gearbox. As standard equipment, the 2011 Odyssey comes with the VCM – Variable Cylinder Management which is capable of shutting down two or even three of the engine’s cylinders when you do not need the power, thus improving the fuel efficiency.
Along with a couple of other measures, including the 100 pounds weight reduction, allowed the Odyssey to obtain excellent EPA ratings. The minivan will do 18 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg combined with the standard 5-speed automatic transmission. With the optional gearbox, the car improves those numbers by a single mile-per-gallon. Pretty impressive for a minivan that has a curb weight of about 4,400 pounds. These figures allow it to be the most efficient 8-passengers car at the moment.
It wouldn’t be a real minivan if it didn’t had some video screens for the kids in the back which is why Honda decided to offer an optional 16.2-inch widescreen that folds down from the headliner in the second row. Also available is a more conventional screen, measuring 9 inches. However, you need to know that the big screen is in fact two normal-sized displays that are united. Although you can stretch out a movie on both screens, these were designed for selecting two video sources and playing a video format on both screen will look quite bad. Although it has a HDMI port, video game fans shouldn’t get excited because most of today’s games are widescreen high-definition and they will not look very good on the optional screen.
The biggest disadvantage of the 2011 Honda Odyssey is without any doubt its price tag. Although the starting price is pretty attractive at only $27,800, if you want to get that 6-speed optional gearbox you also have to get the DVD player and the navigation system as these come bundled. This optional package will set you back $1,500 and we don’t understand why the DVD and the nav system must come bundled with the gearbox. We will have to wait and see if the Odyssey can face other cars from this segment like the Nissan Quest.

Originally launched about two decades ago, the first and the second generation of the Quest were offered with 6-cylinder front-wheel drive powertrains and the interior was spacious enough to accommodate seven passengers. Both of these cars were made at the Ford’s assembly plant located in Avon Lake, Ohio. Back then the car was called Mercury Villager and it didn’t have success because of its short wheelbase and was surpassed in sales by cars like the Toyota Sienna, the Honda Odyssey and the Dodge/Chrysler twins.
Things changed for the better 6 years ago when the third generation was launched. This time, the Nissan Quest was assembled in Nissan’s plant located in Canton, Mississippi. The third generation was available with a traditional powertrain, a significantly longer wheelbase and passenger configuration, making it more attractive to big families. Other important changes in comparison to the first two generations were the avant-garde sheetmetal as well as the center-mounted instrument pod that was at that moment very bold. It was so bold that for the 2007 generation, it was completely redesigned. Upon start, the car was already plagued with a serious competition and most important, early quality issues. For these reasons the sales plummeted from almost 50,000 units in 2004, to fewer than 9,000 cars sold last year. This year, the Nissan Quest opted out of the competition, but is back with new forces for the upcoming year.
The new generation of the Nissan Quest was officially unveiled at the 2010 edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show. Putting it side by side with the outgoing generation, the new one has the same width, but it is one inch taller and four inches shorter in length. The wheelbase of the 2011 model is almost six inches shorter while the base curb weight of 4,367 pounds has grown by 60 pounds across the entire range. On the good side, the weight distribution is now more efficient with 55/45, in comparison with the previous generation (60/40). The towing capacity of 3,500 pounds and the 20 gallons fuel tank remained the same.
We are indeed talking about a minivan but this does not mean that it has to be ugly. The 2011 Nissan Quest has a rather interesting design in our opinion, without almost anything in common with the previous generation, which is a very good thing as the old one had a very unattractive design. With the new model, Nissan has added front triangle windows for improving outward visibility. The overall look of the car might not be stylish or sleek, but rather functional and distinctive, which is a good thing in our opinion, giving the Quest a unique look.
The cabin of the car can accommodate up to seven passengers and it is traditionally configured, without anything special. The standard instrument cluster is located behind the steering wheel while the transmission shifter is placed slightly to the left of the dashboard. Nissan put the HVAC vents high on the dashboard, on each side of the generous optional navigation screen. Above the infotainment controls you will find the climate controls, both to the right of the Quest’s shifter.
Both the driver and the front passenger sit in individual seats that are split by a comfortable fixed center console, while the car’s second row has also two individual bucket seats. Between the seats located on the second row there is a removable floor-mounted center console. Despite the fact that the second row seats can fold forward, they were not designed to be entirely removed. The third row of the 2011 Nissan Quest is a 60/40-split bench that has three passenger belts and can be folded forward, but just like he second row, it cannot be removed.
The new model will be offered with four trim levels: Quest S, Quest SV, Quest SL and Quest LE. The first one will get you the standard 16-inch steel rims with full wheel covers; a rear roof spoiler; AM/FM/6 CD audio system that has four speakers; Nissan Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition; permanent rear storage wheel; fold-flat second and third row seats as well as first and second row center consoles; wood-tone trim; front door map pockets and a 6-way adjustable driver’s seat.
If you opt for the SV trim level, the Nissan Quest is equipped with 16-inch aluminum-alloy rims, one-touch power sliding doors; six speakers; conversation mirror; fog lights; power driver’s seat lumbar adjustment; tri-zone auto temperature control; rear view monitor; USB port and iPod connectivity and leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The SL features a leather-wrapped shift knob; auto-dimming inside mirror with compass; 18-inch alloy rims; 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat; quick release fold flat third row; leather-wrapped shift knob; auto on/off headlights as well as other features.
The top of the line trim level is the LE which gives you HID xenon headlights; blind spot warning system; 13-speakers Bose audio system; 8-inch VGA color display mounted on the dashboard; rear 11-inch display for DVD; memory system for driver’s seat and the outside mirrors as well as other equipments.
The 2011 Nissan Quest is equipped with the proprietary VQ 6-cylinder power unit that features the company’s twin Variable Induction Control System – NICS. The 3.5-liter engine is capable of outputting 253 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque. The engine is linked to the also proprietary Xtronic CVT transmission with ASC – Adaptive Shift Control.
All things considered, the 2011 Nissan Quest is certainly a major step forward in comparison with the previous generation, but in our opinion, the future of this car does not look very good as the Japanese minivan has a bad reputation because of the previous generations. In addition, next year there will be plenty of minivans invading the market, making it even harder for the Quest to grab the attention of potential customers. Both the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey received significant upgrades and will most likely keep their customer base in the future, leaving the Quest without any real chances on this competitive minivan market.

Ford just unveiled their latest iteration of the C-MAX model which for the 2012 model combines the updated design with the flexible seating configuration for up to seven (5+2) people. The 2012 C-MAX is an important part of Ford’s global small vehicle strategy that will deliver minimum 10 cars (and 2 million units sold annually) – from a single C-vehicle platform by 2012.
With the launch of the C-MAX, Ford will be introducing several unique features like the versatile 5+2 seating configuration that offers five seats in the main cabin plus two smaller seats located in the third row. Other important features of the car are the two sliding doors that allow a very comfortable entrance, active park assist, hands-free power-operated liftgate as well as an advanced system that is capable of steering the car into parallel parking spaces on its own (we are eager to see how this works in real life conditions).
The all-new 1.6-liter EcoBoost power unit developed by Ford is available with the C-MAX and offers the right balance between performance and fuel efficiency as well as reduced CO2 emission levels. This new engine is 20% more efficient as far as the fuel consumption in comparison with the naturally aspirated engine thanks to the high-pressure direct injection combined with the twin independent variable camshaft timing and the low-inertia turbocharging. With the EcoBoost, the C-MAX will most likely be the best 7-seat car regarding fuel economy on the highway.
The entry-level power unit of the car will be a 2.5-liter iVCT I-4 (also available on the Fusion model) that offers enough low-end torque and was optimized for small crossover application. Both of these engines are linked to the 6F35 automatic 6-speed gearbox developed by Ford.
Thanks to its 109.7-inch wheelbase and a respectable overall length of 178 inches, the Ford C-MAX offers plenty of space for seven passengers or for five people and a large amount of luggage. The size of the car resembles a lot to the original minivans developed in North America. For the new model, Ford has developed a clever new method for folding the second row as it is equipped with an interesting mechanism that permits the middle seat position to fold fast and very easy under the right-hand seat, which creates a very useful walk-through area located between the two outboard seats which means that the passengers have a very easy access to the third row in the back. In addition, the second row of the minivan sports the slide and recline functionality, meaning that the row can be adapted for various combinations of passenger seat positions and cargo capacity. The outboard second-row seats are equipped with the tip-and-slide forward function which allows an easier access to the third row when the second one is occupied.
Taken from the official press release published by Ford, here are the most important features of the Ford C-MAX: Touchscreen-operated navigation system; front and rear parking sensors, Sirius Satellite Radio; dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control; ambient lightning with illuminating footwells, cupholders available in multiple colors; Sony Audio System and the Easy Fuel system which provides a very tight seal and eliminates the risk of losing the caps or the possibility of loose-fitting.
The 2012 Ford C-MAX was awarded with a 5-star rating by Euro NCAP, managing to achieve the highest score ever recorded by a car for whiplash protection and also it did extremely well for both child and adult occupant safety. Some highlights of the safety features of the minivan include the AdvanceTrac with RSC – Roll Stability Control with curve control that helps the driver to maintain the vehicle’s stability; dual front and side airbags that can be tuned depending on the weight, size and belt status; first, second and third row Safety Canopy side-curtain airbags; tire pressure monitoring system; driver and passenger-side blind spot mirrors and a strong body architecture that uses many parts made out of high-strength steel.
A first for the industry is the hands-free liftgate that allows the owners of the car to unlock and open the rear hatch when their hands are full in a very fast way. With the key fob, the driver of the C-MAX will have to do a gentle leg motion below the center of the rear bumper which will activate the sensors of the minivan, unlocking and raising the rear liftgate.
The car will be available in three trim levels: S, SE and SEL. The 2012 Ford C-MAX will be officially launched at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. Pricing was not announced at the moment of the press release.

Premiere – 2011 Nissan Quest
Back in the 90s, Nissan wanted their own minivan and for this reason it partnered with Ford. They rebadged the Mercury Villager and in this way the original Quest was born and lasted for an entire generation. 10 years ago in 2000, Ford stopped producing the Mercury Villager so Nissan had to come up with their idea of the Quest model which was based on the Altima sedan. The sales figures were that awful that Nissan even thought of dropping the entire segment. Nissan did not give up and came with a new generation of the Quest, designed in Japan.
Unlike the previous generations which were built in Canton, Mississippi, the 2011 Nissan Quest will be manufactured in Japan. We are talking about a van here so there are no major changes in terms of exterior styling, because owners of these cars do not care very much about the appearance. Despite that, the car looks very odd, but what minivan doesn’t?
The major selling points of any vans or minivans are the ease-of-use and list of features, not the looks. The Nissan Quest’s second and third row can fold in order to accommodate a wide variety of goodies you can put into it. As a downside, the chairs cannot be entirely removed nor do they fold into the floor of the car. However, you can fold them forward in order to make a flat road area which will allow a much simpler and easier access to whatever you put behind the third row of the Quest. The minivan gets 60/40 split cover in comparison to Dodge’s proprietary Stow’n’Go second row that can fold the chairs into the floor.
The 2011 Nissan Quest is available with four trim levels: S, SV, SL and the top of the line LE. The S model goes for sale at a basic price of $28, 550. Nissan did not mention the prices for the other trim levels at this moment. The entry-level S trim level will get you cloth seats, manual front seats, 16-inch steel rims, keyless entry and starting plus cruise control. The SV trim level will offer you 16-inch aluminum rims, auto-dimming rearview mirror, backup camera, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, 4.3-inch color display, 6-speaker audio system, power-sliding side doors and a leather steering wheel.
For those of you that want a little more customization to the Quest, you can choose the two opening sunroofs, satellite radio, and rear DVD entertainment system, an easier to operate third-row folding configuration, leather upholstery, a power liftgate and powered & heated front seats. The top of the range LE trim level will come with a power function that allows you to raise the third row, a built-in navigation system, an air-purifying climate control plus a blind-spot warning system.
All of the trim levels are offered with the tire-pressure monitoring system that has the same feature as the Infiniti QX56. We are talking about the situation in which the hazard lights start flashing when the air begins to flow into the tire and the horn of the car beeps softly when the desired pressure of the tires is reached.
The engine of the car is the same that can be found in the Murano and Altima models. It is a VQ35DE V-6 linked to a CVT gearbox, which means that it should be quite agile. It can offer 253 hp and a maximum torque of 236 lb-ft, similar to the Sienna (265 hp / 245 lb-ft) and the Odyssey (248 hp/250 lb-ft), but a little lower when put side by side with the Pentastar V6 engine that powers the Grand Caravan (283 hp / 260 lb-ft). Similar to its rivals, the Nissan Quest is only a front wheel drive car. The Sienna is the only car that can get an AWD system for extra money. In terms of size, the Quest is just about the same as the rest of the competitors, despite the fact that it is a little bit taller and narrower than the rest of the minivans.
With this 2011 Quest model, Nissan doesn’t bring anything new to the market because it is quite similar with the already launched models from other competitors and without any doubt it will have a very hard life in terms of sales figures. More than that, the 2011 Grand Caravan is more powerful and has a finer interior in comparison to the Quest. The Sienna and Odyssey models are known for being very easy to drive plus they offer at least one feature that the Quest does not have.

Among the myriad of refreshed and all new model announcements, Chrysler has also revealed a revised version of its bread and butter model, the Town & Country mini van.
The 2011 Chrysler Town & Country will add a lot of extra features, as well as a brand new engine, in order to attract practical families that want something to haul around the kids with.
First off, the new Town & Country is equipped with the SafetyTec package, which includes over 40 safety features, with things like blind spot assist or rear cross-path detection.
The interior has been slightly upgraded, but keeps the same Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system, which allows easier access to the third row of seats. The center console has been upgraded, as new features were added to keep passengers entertained. Customers can choose from dual DVD systems, which can play different discs on two separate screens, or even Sirius satellite TV or Flo TV, each with dedicated children broadcasts.
Under the hood of the new 2011 Chrysler Town & Country sits the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, rated at 283 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque. Even though its power is more than enough for a regular minivan, the fuel economy is also pretty decent. The EPA rates the new Town & Country at 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg highway.
The 2011 Chrysler Town & Country will be rolling into dealerships at the end of the year.

After a pretty long investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Ford have announced that a recall has been issued, affecting 1998-2003 Ford Windstar minivans.
Around 575,000 models are affected, predominantly those located in the US’ Salt Belt, meaning states where salt is used to melt snow during winter months. This can lead to extra corrosion on the rear axle beams, eventually resulting in the beams snapping under stress.
Ford will be notifying owners in September. The Windstar is still under investigation by the NHTSA over front subframe corrosion issues, also stemming from the use of road salt. The results of that investigation have yet to be revealed.

Chrysler is keeping up with the recalls, this time with minivans once again taking center stage. After revealing a
recall safety campaign for 312,000 2005-2006 minivans over airbag issues, a new problem is plaguing 2008 and 2009 model year vehicles.
According to the Pentastar, 284,831 2008-2009 Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan models are now affected by a faulty wire harness that can subject it to wear every time the rear sliding door is activated. Over time, this can lead to the insulation to peel off and a short circuit is possible. As you know, this can lead to a fire that can happen at any moment.
The models affected were manufactured between February and September 2007. Their owners will be notified of this recall and a free fix is available in dealerships. For more details, you can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

A few weeks ago, we heard a pretty interesting rumor about Toyota‘s future plans with its hybrid endeavors. It revealed that the long awaited expansion of the Prius lineup will be made with a full pledged seven-seat MPV.
Now, according to MotorTrend, we will see this new hybrid MPV, presumably called the Alpha, as early as spring 2011. According to their sources, the Toyota Alpha will get a lithium-ion battery pack, a first for the hybrid models produced by the Japanese company.
Just so it has all its bases covered, Toyota is also thinking of a smaller, five-seat compact MPV. This version would be the cheaper one, as it will still use the nickel metal hydride battery pack as the current Prius hybrid hatchback.
Toyota knows that more hybrid models will guarantee its success, especially in markets like Japan or USA, so these models will arrive sooner or later. Now it’s time to bet on what motor show (Tokyo or LA, probably), will host the official announcement of these family-friendly hybrids.

Toyota reportedly planning Prius minivan for 2011
We know Toyota wants to further increase its hybrid offerings and will also launch some of these new models under the Prius nameplate.
Now, a new report from Reuters, that cites Japan’s Nikkei daily business newspaper, says that the Japanese company is currently planning on releasing a Prius-based minivan model, that will use a lithium-ion battery pack, instead of the nickel-metal hydride one, currently found on the 2010 Prius hatchback.
It seems that the new minivan will aim to offer a more efficient hybrid solution for those who want three rows of seats and the capability to carry seven passengers. The model is expected on the Japanese market in 2011 and the new batteries are set to be manufactured at a joint venture plant the carmaker has developed with Panasonic.
While we can’t say for sure if this will come true, Toyota does want to make even more money from the hybrid business, so the new Prius minivan makes a lot of sense.

Toyota recalls 600,000 1998-2010 Sienna minivans over spare tire cable corrosion issue
Road salt used against ice in norther states of the US is once again causing problems to a carmaker, this time adding another issue on the already full plate of Toyota.
The Japanese company has just issued a voluntary recall covering 600,000 Sienna minivans, produced between 1998 and 2010. These models might see the cable that supports the spare tire to become corroded over time, and eventually fail, resulting in the spare tire coming off behind the car.
As you can imagine, such a thing might be very bad for anyone riding behind you, especially in rush hour traffic or any such tricky conditions. The recall officially affects northern states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Owners will receive a notice to head to the nearest dealership to have their car checked up, but a fix has yet to be found, meaning you’ll have to head back later to have the car fixed. Until then, be careful not to tailgate any Sienna minivan.

Chrysler issues “safety campaign” (recall) for 312,000 2005-2006 minivans
Chrysler is definitely learning a few things from Toyota, and in order to play it safe, has just issued a “safety improvement campaign”, or in simpler terms, a recall without being forced by the NHTSA.
The source of this recall is an airbag sensor in the front of the 2005-2006 Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Caravan and Dodge Grand Caravan models, or around 312,000 vehicles. It seems water can leak in the sensor, given certain “environmental conditions”, most likely melting snow. This water will cause the airbag sensor to glitch, which in turn will make the airbag fault warning light appear on the dash. If left unattended, the sensor can fail altogether, effectively disabling the airbag system completely, which, needless to say, is quite severe.
Customers are advised to take their vans to an authorized service to have the sensor swapped out with a better one. The recall campaign is scheduled to start in June, but you can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 for more details.
