2012 Opel Astra GTC Unleashed In Frankfurt

2012 Opel Astra GTC

The official debut of the new Astra GTC occurred this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show where Opel decided to bring its sexiest Astra model ever launched. It based on the 5-door model and comes with a nice bodykit, along with a 10 mm longer wheelbase. In addition, the tracks are now wider by 40 mm in the front and 30 mm out in the back.

The German automaker mentioned that they’ve fine-tuned the chassis of the hot GTC by implementing a bespoke HiPerStrut suspension in the front while at the rear it has a Watt’s link axle configuration that will probably increase the dynamics of the car.

At first, the car will be available in Europe with a selection of five engines, developing between 100 hp and 180 hp. Clients will be able to order the Astra GTC with a frugal 1.7-liter CDTI ecoFLEX diesel that outputs 110 hp or 130 hp. Both of these engines benefit as standard from the stop/start system.

Opel is also working on a more potent OPC version which will probably get a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that should deliver almost 300 hp. In UK, the car will wear the VXR designation just like the previous models.

Irmscher Opel Astra GTC Revealed

Irmscher Opel Astra GTC

The German tuners from Irmscher have decided to take the cool Opel Astra GTC and make it a little bit better. Under the hood, they took the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine and played with it for a little while and now it produces 217 hp (220 PS / 162 kW) while the peak torque has been raised to 202 lb.-ft (274 Nm). As a reminder, the standard engine generates 177 hp (180 PS / 132 kW) so you get a boost of 40 hp which isn’t half bad.

As you can see, they’ve also come up with a more aggressive body kit, installing a new front grill, a roof spoiler as well as a rear diffuser that incorporates an elliptical quad exhaust. In addition, they’ll also lower your car by 30mm by installing a suspension kit and can install 21-inch alloys that have 245-sized tires.

For the inside cabin, Irmscher adds aluminum pedals and lots of fine leather to make the cruising more comfortable.

Sexy 2012 Opel Astra GTC Goes Official

Opel Astra GTC

I loved the previous generation of the Astra GTC and the new one is even more breathtaking. General Motors decided not to wait anymore and unveiled the model, ahead of its public debut which will occur this September during the 64th edition of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Set to go on sale later on this year, it will wear the Opel badge in Europe, except for United Kingdom as it will be available as a Vauxhall. In addition, if we were to believe recent reports, U.S. will get a Buick Astra GTC version.

Opel Astra GTC

Opel says that compared to the 5-door hatchback and the estate versions, the only elements that these cars share are the door handles and the roof aerial. Even the tracks and the wheelbase have been changed for the GTC version. The sporty model has been lowered by 15 mm and the wheelbase has grown in size by 10mm. In addition, both tracks are wider now, measuring 1,584 mm in the front (+40 mm more than before) and 1,588 mm in the back (+30 mm than before).

Opel and Vauxhall said that the new generation of the Astra GTC is a more driver’s car in comparison to its 5-door sibling. We have enough reasons to believe this statement if we take into consideration the fact that it features a High Performance Strut setup, which can be found on the OPC / VXR version of the Insigna, while the standard model, comes with a regular McPherson suspension configuration.

Out in the back, the 2012 Astra GTC has the same Watt’s link axle, but Opel offers the possibility to opt for a fully-adaptive FlexRide chassis control system that comes with three settings: standard, tour and sport.

Upon launch, customers will be able to choose from four engines, but others will follow, including the all-mighty OPC version which will be out sometime in 2012.

At the moment, we know that it will come with a 2.0-liter CDTI common-rail turbo diesel power unit that produces 165 hp and 380 Nm of torque. It benefits from a diesel particulate filter and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, along with Opel’s new generation of the start/stop system. Powered by this engine, the Astra GTC needs 8.9 seconds to do the 0-62 mph sprint, on its way to a top speed of 131 mph (210 km/h) while returning 48 mpg (4.9 liters / 100 km) and CO2 emissions of 129 g/km.

Opel Astra GTC

The most potent engine will be a turbocharged gasoline 1.6-liter unit, good for 180 hp and mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, enabling the car to reach a top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h). A less powerful 1.4-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engine will be available in two output configurations: 120 hp and 140 hp.

Opel Astra GTC

In United Kingdom, prices for the 2012 Astra GTC start from 18,495 pounds for the model fitted with the 1.4-liter 120 hp engine, while the 165 PS SRi 2.0 CDTi will set you back at least 22,430 pounds.

Opel Astra GTC-based Buick In The Works

Opel Astra GTC

If we were to believe our colleges from Car & Driver, Buick will get yet another Opel-based model, this time the sexy Astra GTC. We should expect to see a 3-door coupe/hatch that will rival Hyundai’s Veloster model. In addition, a convertible version is also under development, but nothing is certain at the moment.

Opel Astra GTC

Under the hood we will probably see the same engine as the Opel will get, a turbocharged 2.0-liter power plant that delivers 286 hp (250 PS / 213 kW). The Astra GTC’s engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and it will also feature a front-axle limited slip differential. Other features include the FlexRide suspension that sports a compound crank rear axle and a Watt’s link.

Opel Astra GTC Unleashed

Opel Astra GTC

Probably one of my favorite cars that will be revealed this year is the Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC. The automaker has released the first two pictures with the sexy coupe, along with a short clip. Unfortunately, we can’t tell you about the specifications, but it looks that the design has been inspired from the GTC Paris Concept which was unveiled in 2010. The bad news is that the production model doesn’t have that aggressive front fascia, those LED fog lights and the dual exhaust system.

Opel Astra GTC

Reports say that it will feature a 2.0-liter turbocharged power unit that cranks out 286 hp (290 PS / 213 kW), mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox that sends all of those ponies to the front wheel through a limited slip differential.

The Opel/Vauxhall GTC will also sport an advanced FlexRide suspension that boosts a compound crank rear axle and a Watt’s link.

The car will be officially unveiled on June 7th so stay tuned for more information.

Opel Astra GTC Appears On Facebook

Opel Astra GTC

You will be happy to hear that the production version of Opel’s Astra GTC Concept that we saw last year at the Paris Motor Show is going to look pretty much the same. Scheduled to make an appearance at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show that will be organized in September, the sleek Astra GTC is identical to the concept, except for the different design of the tail lamp and the lack of aero parts.

Opel/Vauxhall showcases GTC Paris concept, previews future Astra GTC three-door

Even though the start of the Paris Motor Show is a few weeks away, Opel and Vauxhall have decided to showcase the first sketches of the GTC Paris Concept.

The model, as you can see above, is basically a teaser of the upcoming three-door version of the new Astra hatchback. The Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC will be making an appearance in showrooms at the beginning of next year.

As you can see, the GTC Paris concept showcases some extremely aggressive lines, especially on the side, where big creases create the illusion of side skirts. The arched rear inspires performance, but Opel insists that it will offer ample space for the people inside.

Expect the production Astra GTC, whether it’s badged as an Opel or a Vauxhall, to borrow plenty of styling cues from this concept, but tone some of them down, including the 21-inch wheels.

Expect more details about this new concept when the Paris Motor Show will open its doors. Until then, check it out in the photo gallery below.
