Japan-only Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT-86 purist-spec versions announced

Subaru BRZ RA purist-spec version

Subaru and Toyota have announced the other day that they will be launching a stripped down version of their BRZ/GT-86 sports coupes for the domestic market. Both cars will be available next month for a base price of 2,058,000 yen (about $26,940) for the Subaru BRZ and 1,990,000 (about $25,625) for the Toyota GT-86.

Subaru BRZ RA purist-spec version

This purist package comes with an interior cabin that doesn’t have air conditioning, cup holders, stereo and speakers, hand brake and shift knob, leather wrapped steering wheel, door lamps, stainless still plates, decorative silver trim inside, aluminum pedals or a trunk lamp.

Subaru BRZ RA purist-spec version

Toyota will be offering for its GT-86 model an unpainted flat black front + rear bumpers, door handles and side mirror housings. You can forget about the fog lamps, rear spoiler and the retractable side mirrors because these have also been removed. Instead of the standard 17-inch alloys, the car rides on 16-inch steel wheels that have 205/55R tires.

Toyota GT-86 RC purist-spec version

Other modifications include the removal of the plastic engine cover which in the standard model sits on top of the intake manifold, while the ventilated brake discs have been eliminated from the rear wheels. Now, all of the disc brakes measure 15 inches, making them one inch smaller than the ones available for the R and S spec models. Another significant change would have to be the removal of the car’s torque-sensitive rear differential. Instead of this, the cars feature a mechanical differential. All of these changes have managed to shave off 88 lbs (40 kg) from the car’s curb weight.

Subaru Advanced Tourer previews future estate model

Subaru Advanced Tourer

At this year’s edition of the Tokyo Motor Show, the local carmaker Subaru brought the Advanced Tourer concept that previews a future estate model that will feature a turbocharged gasoline engine and a hybrid drivetrain. The production model is going to be a C-segment sport station wagon and it will be powered by a boxer engine which will be mated to the company’s own Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system.

Subaru Advanced Tourer

The concept shown in Tokyo featured wood and metal interior parts, a glass roof, along with a generous monitor inside the cabin which is integrated in the steering wheel. This offers Internet access and allows the drive to access navigation information and TV broadcast.

Subaru Advanced Tourer

The car measures 4,580mm in length, 1,840mm in width and is 1,430mm tall. It is motivated by a 1.6-liter horizontally-opposed direct fuel injection turbo engine that is connected to a high torque compatible Lineartronic gearbox.

Subaru Advanced Tourer

As far as the hybrid system is concerned, this is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and it is engaged at start-ups and also during low speeds. It can be recharged while the car is braking via the internal combustion engine.

Subaru BRZ debuts

Subaru BRZ

A few days ago Toyota unveiled the GT 86 and now Subaru has decided to do the same thing with its BRZ rear-wheel drive coupe that was developed alongside with Toyota. Under the hood of both cars is the same 4-cylinder 2.0-liter Boxer engine that fires 197 hp and a peak torque of 205 Nm. The BRZ will be available with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a paddle shift 6-speed automatic transmission. There are no official details regarding the performance figures of both cars but the 0-62 mph sprint time should be of around 7 seconds while the top speed will be of approximately 143 mph.

Subaru BRZ

The proportions of the Subaru BRZ are identical to the Toyota GT 86, but the headlights, grille and the fog lights are proprietary to Subaru, just like the more prominent side gills, while at the back it doesn’t have a spoiler. From the press release Subaru published we found out that the car will come as standard with 17-inch alloys and the car will weigh only 1,220 kg thanks to the fact that the Japanese automaker has used a lot of high tensile strength steel.

Scheduled to reach the UK dealerships in summer 2012, the Subaru BRZ will have an estimated starting price of 30,000 pounds.

JDM Subaru Impreza WRX STI S206

The car has been fitted with exclusive Bilstein dampers, a flexible front tower bar and draw stiffener, STi coil springs – all of them promising to make the car more precise and faster while cornering. The car features a new set of 19-inch BBS alloys that have been created especially for this limited edition, and are wrapped around in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

JDM Subaru Impreza WRX STI S206

The Japanese engineers from Subaru also worked on the flat-four turbocharged engine as they managed to further optimize the weight balance between the pistons, crankshaft and connecting rods, managing to improve the rev feel.

JDM Subaru Impreza WRX STI S206

The 2.0-liter engine of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI S206 has also been fitted with a retuned ECU, a reduced-back pressure exhaust system and an enhanced twin-scroll turbocharger, allowing the power unit to develop 320 hp and a peak torque of 318 lb.-ft (431 Nm). Subaru BRZ Concept STI revealed in L.A.

Subaru BRZ Concept STI

Yet another concept version of the highly anticipated BRZ model has been introduced. This time we’re talking about the STI concept which was unveiled this week at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The production model is expected to make its debut on November 30 during the Tokyo Motor Show, before going on sale in spring 2012.

Subaru BRZ Concept STI

As most of you know this by now, the Subaru BRZ is the outcome of the partnership Subaru made with Toyota, and it is a sister model to Toyota’s FT-86 and Scion’s FR-S. All three rear-wheel drive coupes use the same platform and mechanical hardware, including Subaru’s flat-four 2.0-liter engine and the D-4S direct injection technology from Toyota.

Subaru BRZ Concept STI

The horsepower of the Subaru BRZ will be sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox, but we don’t know if the car will get also a 6-speed automatic gearbox, as the one that the Toyota FT-86 will have.

Subaru BRZ Concept STI

The model show in L.A. this week is the STI version which adopts a more aggressive body kit, including here a larger rear spoiler, a lower front spoiler and a carbon fiber roof. The prototype is wearing the traditional Subaru STI blue and comes with 18-inch multispoke alloys wrapped around in 215/45R18 for the front wheels and 225/45R18 for the rear ones.

Subaru previews next-gen Legacy with Advanced Tourer Concept

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

With this Advanced Tourer Concept, Subaru is giving us a glimpse on how the future generation of the Legacy model will look like. This interesting concept is set to make its official debut on November 30th at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

From what we can tell by looking at these photos, the car will feature a very aggressive front end that will have an updated version of the company’s grille, along with a pair of angular headlights. As for the cabin, the concept has polished aluminum and wood surfaces, along with a leather trim and a full glass sunroof. The most interesting feature of the interior would have to be the TV monitor installed inside the steering wheel which shows GPS information and it also has access to the Internet.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

The Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept also benefits from the automaker’s crash avoidance system that includes two cameras which are installed above the rear view mirror. These cameras can monitor traffic conditions and they can detect cyclists and pedestrians.

Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept

Under the hood we find a glimpse of the car maker’s future engine lineup, as Subaru has downsized its 2.0 and 2.5-liter boxer turbos in order to create a more efficient and cleaner 1.6-liter turbo which is linked to an electric motor. We don’t have any specifications about the output, but the company’s engineers have mentioned that this powertrain can be configured to produce up to 262 hp (for the 2.5-liter turbo variant).

At low speeds for a limited distance the car can be driven in electric-only mode, and it comes with an updated version of the automaker’s symmetrical AWD system that sends the power to all four wheels.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept unveiled

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

Set to make an official debut at the upcoming 2011 L.A. Auto Show, the Subaru BRZ STI Concept has been unveiled this week and as you probably know this by now it is based on the new platform that the automaker developed with Toyota.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

This attractive coupe measures 166.7 inches in length, 70.9 inches in width and 50.4 inches in height, while the wheelbase stands at 101.2 inches. The BRZ STI Concept has a 2 + 2 seating layout so the passengers seating in the back probably won’t get a lot of room for the legs.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

Design-wise, the concept adopts a low & blade-like bonnet which means that the engine has been installed as low as possible. It has been developed with short & rear overhangs while at the front it has a hexagonal grille and a pair of hawk eye headlights along with fin-shaped fog lamps which to be honest I don’t really like.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

Anyway, it also has a front-mounted lower spoiler, a massive rear wing which also isn’t very attractive, but its job is to provide more downforce on the rear axle. The car also has a rear diffuser, along with polished stainless steel quad tailpipes, wide rear fender flares, and a vented rear bumper. We should also mention that the roof of the BRZ STI Concept is made from carbon fiber to lower the curb weight of the car.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

The concept is motivated by a naturally-aspirated, 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter Boxer engine that powers the rear wheels. This is a brand new engine that Subaru has developed and it’s linked to a 6-speed manual gearbox. We don’t know the output of the engine or if it will get a turbocharger in the future. The car rides on 18-inch rims with 215/45R18 tires in the front and 225/45R18 tires for the rear wheels. The stopping power is guaranteed by the Brembo brakes on all four corners.

Subaru BRZ STI Concept

The production version of this Subaru BRZ STI Concept will be launched in the spring of 2012 and it will become the first mass-produced sports car that has a front-mounted Boxer engine and a rear-wheel drive configuration. The coupe will be built on the same platform as the one used for the Toyota FT-86 and the Scion FR-S, but it will be significantly different than the other two, probably with more oomph under the hood.

Subaru’s profits are down by 27%

2012 Subaru Impreza

It seems that Subaru is experiencing some difficult times as its owner Fuji Heavy Industries has revealed this week that the year-on-year profits have plummeted by 27%. One of the reasons for this downfall is due to the production disruption that was caused by the terrible earthquake that struck Japan earlier this year.

Aside from the natural calamities, Subaru’s profits have also been affected by the lower number of cars that they’ve sold and due to the weakness of the yen. In addition, another reason for this situation is because of the failure to get the approval for a joint venture project in China.

Sales have fallen by 19% and it is estimated that by the end of this year the company will lose about 26 million pounds. So far, the Chinese government has refused the automaker’s requests to form a joint venture with Chery Automobile which is a state-owned carmaker, on account of it being partly owned by none other than Toyota. The latter has already a joint venture with two automakers from China, and the local government wants to limit the number of the joint venture deals that the non-local car companies are able to make.

New details about the Subaru BRZ

Subaru BRZ (rendering)

Several days ago new details about the Subaru BRZ have emerged and it seems that the coupe will have the lowest center of gravity of all production cars when it will hit the market in summer 2012. Thanks to the RWD configuration of the car, the automaker was able to mount the compact 2.0-liter Boxer engine even lower in the chassis than it would be permissible in the company’s regular 4WD configuration.

Even though the new car has been developed in collaboration with Toyota, which will get its own version, the FT-86, a large part of the engineering has been done by Subaru, but the fuel-injection system will be borrowed from Toyota. It is expected that the BRZ will be more powerful than the FT-86 since the first one will unleash “less than 300 hp” while Toyota’s model will output somewhere around the 200 hp figure.

In a few years, we might see a convertible version of the Subaru BRZ. We don’t have any details about the price tag that the coupe will have but since the automaker said that the main rival will be the sexy VW Scirocco, it should cost roughly the same as the German model.

The car is scheduled to make its official debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show which will be organized next month, where Subaru will finally reveal the production version of the car.

2012 Subaru Impreza Priced From $18,425

2012 Subaru Impreza

The Japanese automaker Subaru announced today that the 2012 Impreza will reach the United States showrooms this November and the base price will cost $18,425 (including the $750 destination charge). This is for the 4-door 2.0i model that has a manual transmission, which means that the 2012MY model will have the exact same starting price as the outgoing model.

2012 Subaru Impreza

The standard engine is an all-new boxer 2.0-liter unit that produces 148 hp (which is 22 hp less than the current 2.5-liter unit of the 2011MY) and a peak torque of 145 lb.-ft (197 Nm). With this power unit, the car manages to return a projected EPA fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

2012 Subaru Impreza

All of the variants of the 2012MY Impreza will come as standard with the company’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system while the aforementioned engine can be linked to either the standard 5-speed manual gearbox or the all-new Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission.

2012 Subaru Impreza

The starting price for the 4-door 2.0i Premium which has more goodies is $18,795, while the five-door Premium will set you back at least $19,295. Opting for the 2.0i Limited 4-door version costs $21,595 while its 4-door sibling is a little bit more expensive, with a starting price of $22,095. Lastly, the five-door-only 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport Premium has a base price of $20,295.

All-new Subaru WRX Won’t Be An Impreza

2010 Subaru (Impreza) WRX STI Concept

It seems that Subaru has made an important decision as the new WRX model, which will be out sometime in 2014, won’t be an Impreza at all as the automaker has decided to separate these two models. In others, the new WRX will be a sport coupe standing on its own feet, featuring a different design from the new generation of the Impreza. However, this doesn’t mean that the cars won’t share the same platform, but the new WRX is going to have a shorter wheelbase so that the handling will be better.

2010 Subaru (Impreza) WRX STI Concept

The new Subaru WRX is also going to get a hotter STI version and the company also plans to return in WRC. Most likely, the car will be powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter boxer engine that should produce somewhere around 266 hp (270 PS / 199 kW). However, this isn’t a certainty, taking into consideration that they’re working on a twin-turbo system which might make it into the production version.

The ultimate WRX STI variant is going to have the same engine, but the engineers will tweak it in order to output about 300 hp (304 PS / 224 kW).
