Both models are based on the Gamma II platform developed by General Motors which will also be used for the new generation of the Corsa. In addition, the same platform has been used for the new Chevrolet Aveo.

Opel Mokka

For the United Kingdom market, the new Mokka is going to be available with a choice of a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine e with 117 hp and a 1.4-liter turbocharged power unit with 142 hp. Customers will also have the possibility to opt for a more frugal 1.7-liter CDTi turbodiesel that will be capable of developing 132 hp and a maximum torque of 221 lb.-ft. All of these three engines will come as standard with the stop/start system, while the turbo ones can be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or an automatic transmission. Aside from the standard front-wheel drive model, the Mokka will also be sold as an all-wheel drive model.

Vauxhall Astra VXR en route for Geneva debut

Opel Astra OPC

The British automaker Vauxhall has published a few days ago new pictures with the upcoming Astra VXR that will be making its public debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show. The most powerful Astra ever made will come with a sporty lower air intake and 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels that offer the car an aggressive look.

Opel Astra OPC

Inside the cabin you will be able to find high-back seats that will be trimmed in leather with contrasting stitching, along with a VXR-badged sporty steering wheel. The Astra VXR will feature a General Motors / SAAB HiPer strut suspension on the front in order to retain steering finesse while the most part of the torque will be sent to the wheels in the front. We should mention that it will be an adaptation of a regular front-strut that will feature a separate knuckle joint which promises to stop the torque steer that FWD cars with a lot of power usually suffer from.

Opel Astra OPC

Another feature of the new Vauxhall Astra VXR is going to be the mechanical limited slip differential that will cut wheel spin while at the same time improve traction out of corners and also from a standing start. Much like the previous generation of the hot Astra, the cockpit of the new model will come with a VXR switch for adjusting the FlexRide adaptive dampers. Vauxhall has also replaced the standard brakes in favor of competition-derived Brembo brakes that will be able to provide more stopping power.

Opel Astra OPC

As a reminder, at the heart of the new Astra VXR will be a direct-injection, turbocharged 2.0-liter Family II engine that is capable of producing 276 hp and a peak torque of 295 lb.-ft.

Opel Astra OPC

No word at the moment about the car’s price tag but most likely it will start from 26,000 pounds. The Vauxhall Astra VXR is expected to reach dealerships this spring after its Geneva debut in March.

Vauxhall VXR8 Wins Fleet World MPG Marathon

Vauxhall VXR8

A car that has a V8 engine isn’t going to win any eco marathons, that’s a fact. At such competitions you would expect to win a hybrid, a diesel or some other frugal and eco-friendly car that doesn’t have a lot of HP under its hood and is let’s face it, boring (well, maybe except for the Tesla S).

The exception to this rule comes from the Vauxhall VXR8 which is motivated by a massive LS3 6.2-liter engine that fires 431 hp. The car is essentially a rebadged Holden HSV, and it managed to win the Fleet World MPG Marathon two-day competition, covering 350 miles.

We should state that the award was not handed for the most efficient car in the competition, but for the one that managed to record the highest percent improvement in comparison to the official fuel consumption figures published by the automakers.

Vauxhall VXR8

The Vauxhall VXR8 was driven by Chris Mooney who is an editor at Top Gear, while on the passenger seat was Andrew Duerden who is an eco-driving expert and a Vauxhall archivist. The official fuel consumption for the car is 21 mpg UK (17.5 mpg US or 13.4 liters / 100 km), but Mooney was able to improve it by a whopping 53% to 32.14 mpg UK (26.7 mpg US or 8.8 liters / 100 km).

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nurburgring Edition Reaches UK

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

The fastest and most powerful Vauxhall Corsa ever made has finally arrived in the company’s UK dealerships where it carries a price tag of 22.295 pounds which is almost 3,400 pounds than the regular VXR model which will set you back “only” 18,900 pounds.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

The new model is motivated by a retuned version of the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine of the VXR and now it unleashes 205 hp @ 5,750 rpm and a peak torque of 207 lb.-ft (280 Nm), which is more than the VXR’s 192 hp and 196 lb.-ft.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

They’ve managed to squeeze more power from that engine by modifying its management as well as the turbocharger system, while also adding a brand new sports exhaust which offers support for 98-octane fuel and comes with reduced back pressure.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

Vauxhall says that its special edition Corsa VXR can do the 0-62 mph sprint in 6.5 seconds, being able to hit a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h). The company’s engineers equipped the car with a new mechanical, multi-plate limited slip differential in order to improve traction.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

As for the handling capabilities, these have been updated thanks to the installation of Bilstein dampers and springs, more powerful and lighter Brembo brakes and also by lowering the ride of the car by 20 mm in the front and 15 mm at the back. In addition, the Corsa VXR Nurburgring Edition comes with recalibrated Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control systems.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

Regarding the appearance of the vehicle, it now features stainless steel dual exhaust tips, a new design for the forged alloys that have a high-gloss grey finish, along with a bunch of “Nurburgring” logos on the front spoiler lip and the B-pillars. In addition, customers are able to choose from two new paint finishes: red “Henna” and apple green “Grasshopper”.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR Nürburgring Edition

Inside the cabin, the vehicle has been fitted with black & red “Nurburgring” letters on the sill plates as well as front Recaro seats. Lastly, it has white stitching for the gearshift console, the handbrake as well as on all the seats.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer Gets 21,000 Pounds Price Tag

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

The only MPV in the world I would ever consider buying is this awesome Vauxhall/Opel Zafira Tourer, which has made it to the Frankfurt Motor Show. The UK version will have a starting price of 21,000 pounds for the budget ES 1.8 trim level. This means that the 7-seater will be 1,200 pounds more affordable than the Ford S-Max, which at the moment is the top player in this segment.

It has the same seven-seat configuration as the regular Zafira MPV, but the new Tourer version is 190 mm longer while the wheelbase has been extended by 57 mm. In addition, track is up by a good 96 mm in the front and 78 mm out in the back. The interior cabin of the model has gained additional seating flexibility as well as a higher level of quality, plus there are a whole bunch of new electronic driver aids, along with two more power units.

The second row of the Zafira Tourer features three separate seats instead of a traditional bench, while its central chair can be folded and rotated away to create more space for the outer-seat passengers. In the front, the MPV now has an additional storage compartment located between the seats and the armrests which are flexible.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

For this model, the German engineers borrowed the isolated subframe and the MacPherson strut suspension from the Insignia, while at the back it has a Watt’s linkage configuration which should provide additional stability. An optional feature would have to be the company’s FlexRide reactive adaptive damping.

As far as the engines are concerned, the sexy Zafira Tourer can be ordered with a 1.8-liter gasoline unit that develops 138hp, along with a turbocharged 1.4-liter that has the same output. Other than that, it comes with a trio of 2.0-liter CDTi diesel engines that are available also for the aforementioned Insignia. These diesels generate 109, 128 and 163 hp.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

As we mentioned, the base model will be the ES trim, which is followed by the more expensive Exclusiv, Sri, SE and the top-spec Elite. The 1.8-liter gasoline engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the others feature a 6-speed manual or the optional 6-speed automatic transmission (available on certain models). Also on some variants, stop/start will be available.

Some of the new tech goodies include lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot alert, along with parking aid that can detect appropriate spaces and after that will guide the driver in.

Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

The introduction of the Zafira Tourer doesn’t mean that the standard model will be discontinued, at least not in the first few years. Opel has hinted that in the future they will launch a bunch of other new models, like a SUV derived from the Corsa, along with a soft-roader like Peugeot’s 3008 model in order to replace the Antara which hasn’t been doing so good as far as sales are concerned.

The new Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Tourer is scheduled to go on sale towards the end of this year.

Spy Shots – Vauxhall Junior

Vauxhall Junior

The first car in the small segment launched by Vauxhall is going to be this model, dubbed internally as the Junior. Set to rival cars like the Fiat 500 or the Mini, it set to go on sale in the beginning of 2013. It is going to be a 3-door hatchback that measures 3.7 meters, just like the Mini. Most likely, it will have an appealing and cute design, with a low beltline, narrow pillars and big round-shaped headlights.

Vauxhall Junior

The styling for the car was created by the Vauxhal/Opel studio located in Russelsheim and should be able to accommodate up to four adults thanks to its spacious cabin which should offer more room than the aforementioned funky Fiat 500.

Vauxhall Junior

As far as the engines are concerned, the Vauxhall Junior will probably come with a range of frugal 3-cylinder engines, both gasoline and diesel variants. In addition, more powerful engines are probably under development. According to company insiders, the power unit will probably be offered in two different sizes in order to accommodate bigger powertrains. Moreover, in 2015 Vauxhall will most likely launch an electric variant of the Junior.

Vauxhall Junior (rendering)

When it will hit the market, the car is not going to wear the “Junior” designation. The bosses over at General Motors said that the real name has already been chosen and we might find it out next month during the Frankfurt Motor Show.

2010 UK Best Car Lease Deals

2010 has been a great year for car leases in the UK as well. The end of 2010 was marked by the announced VAT raise to 20% that determined dealers to impress and attract their clients with all sorts of incentives like free insurance, affordable finance deals, discounts and many more. Manufacturers like Volvo or Hyundai decided to give customers the chance to swap their old cars for a massive discount on their new car. But even if you weren’t interested in swapping your car, you could benefit from the discounts offered by Renault and Vauxhall for the clients that were able to pay up front.

Let’s know take a look the 2010 UK best car leases. One example would be the lease of a Mercedes SLK Roadster for only £332 a month. That’s a bargain price for a gorgeous convertible offered by FinanceAcar.co.uk. The offer was limited, but all you needed to do was to register on the website and wait for a call from the lease company in order to establish all the necessary details. This is considered one of the most valuable Mercedes models because of its good enough performance, affordable price and also affordable running cost.

The small car segment was also filled with great lease deals. So if you were interested in leasing a smart car, the 2010 UK best smart car lease was the offer for the Nissan Micra. At only £129 a month, this Nissan Micra 3rd Hatchback 1.2 Visia was a lease agreement that many of us would have been happy to sign. With looks that transform it into a charming smart car and a manufacturer that is known for the quality and longevity of the cars it produces, the Micra could not be forgotten by my list.

Who doesn’t love the Toyota Prius and at £267 a month, I started to love it even more in 2010. This was definitely another incredible lease deal despite the recent recall problem that affected the company. The sales weren’t that affected and Toyota has seriously handled the problem. That price for a green car is not bad at all, especially considering that we are talking about a car with a fresh look, highly stylish because of all the glass used and the rakish roof angle.

Toyota Prius

Fiat was on top of its game as well, offering one of the best 2010 UK car lease deals for the Fiat500. For just £167 a month, you were getting this iconic car capable of helping you to easily make your way through the crowded traffic. It’s a cutie on wheels offering enough space for the driver and the passenger along with safety measures and an engine that will keep you safe on the road.

Last but not least, the Vauxhall Astra Sporthatch was another excellent deal at £213 a month offered by one of the top lenders in the UK and also by the manufacturer’s finance houses. The car’s quality is impressive as well as its behavior on the road and the engine that makes it all possible. All these qualities have turned it into a desirable acquisition that for that lease price was one of the 2010 UK best car lease deals.

Leasing it’s always an option if you can’t afford buying a new car or you just like the idea of changing your car with a brand new one every two or three years. And with this lease deals available, who can blame you? I sure don’t, because I know that 2011 will be offering even more incredible deals, harder to ignore and forget about.

Being a special edition, it comes bundled with some nice features like the Arden Blue metallic paint, dark-tinted glass, Recaro seats, bespoke interior air vents and cool 18-inch alloy rims. In comparison with the standard model, the Vauxhall Corsa VXR Blue has a more aggressive front end with deep in-set fog lamps along with a lower front spoiler and a wider front grille.

Available only in the United Kingdom, the Vauxhall Corsa VX Blue has a starting price of 19,425 pounds and will be available at dealerships next month.

Although it looks very cool in my opinion and has some great features, the price tag makes it less desirable in comparison with other cars in this segment that are way more affordable.

2011 Vauxhall VXR8 Announced

2011 Vauxhall VXR8

Yesterday Vauxhall announced the 2011 VXR8 model and published the price list for the United Kingdom market. The car will be officially on sale as of March 2011 and is based on the higher-spec GTS model, featuring full leather trim (as standard) and an updated exterior and interior look. The car sports a powerful 6.2-litre V8 engine that will do 431 PS. This rear-wheel drive car has a starting price of 49,500 pounds (including the increased VAT) and will be available for ordering at the end of the year.

The 2011 Vauxhall VXR8 is based on the recently launched HSV E3 GTS that debuted in Australia a few weeks ago. The outgoing generation of the VXR8 is based on the lower-spec ClubSport R8. The new model is considerably cheaper than the Jaguar XFR, Audi RS6 and the Mercedes E63 AMG with 13k-29k pounds and also more affordable than the Mercedes C63 AMG or the BMW M3.

The new model features an updated “Shockwave” grille, sleek new wing-vents and LED running lights for the front of the car. On the back, you will find the “Superflow” rear spoiler, twin exhaust tips that imitate the front grille shape and LED tail lamps. Similar with the outgoing generation, the 2011 model sports MacPherson struts/progressive rate coil springs in the front and a modern multi-link independent setup at the rear of the VXR8. A premiere to this model is the MRC – Magnetic Ride Control which is a system that adapts up to 1000 times / second to driver inputs and road conditions. This technology is based on the MRC installed by Corvette on their ZR1 supercar and functions by sending an electric current through damper units that are filled with “soft” magnetic particles that harden when the input reaches the maximum value, providing users of the cars great handling, stopping power and exceptional level of the ride.

A new feature on the 2011 model is the Launch Control which is activated when the driver of the VXR8 selects the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Competition Mode. This system is capable of dictating the level of the torque which is delivered to the rear wheels of the Vauxhall, for maximum acceleration.

2011 Vauxhall VXR8

The fourth-generation of the large-capacity V8 6.2-litre LS3 engine is capable of producing 431 PS and an incredible torque of 550 Nm. These figures allow the car to reach 60 mph from start in 4.9 seconds. The top speed of the 2011 Vauxhall VXR8 is 155 mph. The engine of the car can be linked to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or with an automatic transmission that will work through a mechanical limited slip differential.

The inside of the car has received important updates, the VXR8 now benefits from full leather trim (as standard). The front occupants of the car will sit in special HSV Performance Seats that are 8-way adjustable. In order to bring a cleaner and integrated appearance, the car benefits form a new instrument cluster and surround along with an updated switchgear and central stack. Standard on all trim levels are the Aux-in/USB inputs, Bluetooth with touch-screen dialing and phone book display and support for the iPod.

The new model can be equipped with an Enhanced Driver Interface – EDI which is connected to the on-board computer of the Vauxhall VXR8 and constantly streams real-time car performance and dynamics to the generous 5-inch monitor. The driver has the possibility to browse through a wide variety of data, including lap times, drifting levels, power and torque as well as the G-forces levels. The drivers of the car have the possibility to download this data and further analyze it through the MOTEC i2 software which is included.
