The engineers from Polestar installed an updated ECU that allows the 3.0-liter turbocharged engine to develop 325 hp (330 PS / 242 kW) and a peak torque of 354 lb.-ft (480 Nm), which is 25 hp (25 PS / 18 kW) and 29 lb.-ft (40 Nm) more than the standard version.

The soon-to-be-released 2012 Volvo S60 R-Design is going to feature a revised 6-cylinder power unit which will produce 325 hp and 354 lb.-ft, exactly the same as this Performance Project so think of the latter as a preview or something…

Volvo S60 R-Design to appear in Paris

Volvo revealed its most important model of the year, the new S60 sedan, at the Geneva Motor Show. This doesn’t mean it will arrive at the upcoming Paris Motor Show empty handed, as the Swedish company confirmed that it will bring a hotter S60 R-Design version.

As seen before with other upgraded Volvo models, the R-Design version will definitely bring a range of new accessories for the S60. These include a body kit, special options, and might even add a retuned suspension or improved handling.

Until the Paris show starts, Volvo USA has officially revealed that the S60 will be making its way into dealerships next month. At first, it will pack a 300 HP 3.0-liter inline-six, with all-wheel drive, starting at $37,700. Next year, the range will also see the addition of a cheaper front-wheel drive five-cylinder model.

Video: Volvo S60 safety demonstration goes wrong

The new Volvo S60 is being hyped up pretty hard by the Swedish company not just for its new safety systems but also for its improved performance, through the Naughty Volvos campaign.

But seeing as how the Scandinavian carmaker is famous for its leading safety technology, people still expect the 2011 S60 to provide the best protection money can buy.

As such, the company organized a little demonstration for the collision warning system. Those not familiar with the technology should know that if the car detects you’re going to crash, it will alert you and, if you don’t respond, it’s going to brake the car for you.

As such, the company sent a new S60 towards a parked truck at 30 mph. What should have been a safety demonstration quickly went awfully wrong for the Swedish company, as the new sedan crashed into the back of the truck.

The company said that it was human error, as the vehicle wasn’t fully prepared for the test, but the video of the crash is still pretty intense. Thankfully, as you can see, the passenger compartment isn’t even scratched after the crash.

Video: How naughty do you want your Volvo S60?

Right before the Geneva Motor Show kicked off, Volvo released a viral video warning us that ‘Naughty Volvos’ were coming.

Now, the company is finally showing us just what it meant and how we, the fans, can help it get even naughtier.

First off, the naughty 2011 S60 is equipped with a T6 engine capable of 304 HP and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft) of torque. Throw in an all-wheel drive system and you’ve got yourself a pretty powerful combo.

But instead of just showing off the numbers and having us believe it, Volvo will devise a test involving one of its trucks, and asks just how do you want the Volvo S60 to prove its naughtiness.

Hit the jump to check out the video demonstration and then head on over to the YouTube page and submit your own suggestions.

Videos: 2011 Volvo S60 gets presented, driven and crashed

Volvo has unveiled yesterday the new 2011 S60 sedan, which will sports the new brand design, and also a plethora of safety features, with the pedestrian collision system being the most important one.

In order to fully show off the new car, which will see its formal debut at the Geneva Motor Show this March, the Swedish company released five new videos, showcasing the interior and exterior design, how it drives on the open road and on the city, and, last but not least, how it handles in a crash.

2011 Volvo S60 presents itself before its Geneva debut

Automakers are getting ready for the Geneva Motor Show which will be held at the beginning of March, and Volvo is no exception. Even though it is currently switching owners, from Ford to Geely, the Swedish brand will debut the 2011 S60 model in Switzerland next month.

Before that, the company has revealed it on the web, and from what we can see, this car will impress a lot of people, not only through its advanced safety systems, but also through its great design, which vectors in not only making the car look good, but also making sure that things like the front hood is pedestrian-friendly, in the unlikely possibility of an accident.

I do say unlikely as the new S60 will make use of the new Pedestrian Detection system, which uses the City Safety crash avoidance system to detect pedestrians in front of the car and, if need be, remotely apply the brakes so that a tragedy can be avoided.

Future customers will also be thrilled to hear that a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine will be available in the US, outputting 300 HP and 325 lb-ft of torque, together with a six-speed automatic and a Haldex all-wheel drive system. A front-wheel drive model, together with a wagon variant, might arrive at the end of 2010, but don’t keep your fingers crossed just yet.

Europeans, on the other hand, will have more choices available, including a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, as well as a diesel option and the possibility of a dual-clutch gearbox. Further down the road, Volvo might even add the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine from the S40, which will offer 227 HP and 236 lb-ft of torque.

Customers will also be able to choose from three suspension systems: the Base one, the Dynamic, which includes stiffer springs, tuned dampers and thicker piston rods, and the Four-C, which uses the new Volvo adaptive damping system.

Overall, with some clever marketing, Volvo might have a winner on its hands. Take a look at the photo gallery below and then share your thoughts with us about the new 2011 Volvo S60.

Volvo reveals first pictures of the new S60, will debut it in Geneva

Lately much of the news concerning Volvo were about its imminent departure from Ford, who will sell it, if everything goes according to plan, to the Chinese carmaker Geely.

But that hasn’t stopped the engineers from the Swedish automaker from working, as the company has released the first two pictures of the new S60 model, based heavily on the S60 Concept which was teased at the Detroit Motor Show.

“The all-new Volvo S60 is sculpted to move you,” said Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It looks and drives like no other Volvo before and the car’s technology will help you to be safer and more confident behind the wheel.”

Of course, as it is normal for the Swedish manufacturer, the safety side of the S60 is the most important one, as it will feature the new Pedestrian Detection system, on which we showed you a video some time ago. In case you don’t remember, it will (drumroll please) detect pedestrians and, if the driver doesn’t do so, will apply the brakes.

This safety first strategy was highlighted by Volvo’s Senior Safety Advisor Thomas Broberg which said that: “Our aim for 2020 is that no-one should be killed or seriously injured in a Volvo.”

The company also revealed that the official debut will be made at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March.

Video: Volvo S60 Concept driving footage

The Volvo S60 Concept was unveiled earlier this year at the Detroit Motor Show and, with the market launch scheduled for next year, we’re waiting for a production version of the four-door coupe soon. Until then, here’s a video made by some dudes from the Swedish magazine Teknikens Varld, which were lucky enough to take the concept for a drive. Unfortunately, we have no idea what the heck they’re saying, but we assume it was really fun. Enjoy!

Volvo releases S60 Concept teaser photo

At the Detroit Motor Show, next January, Volvo will unveiled the S60 Concept, a car which previews the next generation S60, which is scheduled to debut in 2010. After about month ago they released a teaser photo showing the car’s unique Orrefors crystal interior, today we have the first photo of the car’s coupe-like exterior styling.

“The concept car’s design gives a visual promise of enthusiastic driving characteristics and I can assure you that the all-new S60 will deliver a sporty drive like no Volvo before,” says Stephen Odell, President and CEO at Volvo Cars.

“The inspiration comes from the Swedish coastline’s cliffs and seas. An exciting blend of drama and sensuality,” explains Volvo Cars’ design director, Steve Mattin. “This concept car takes our design DNA to the next level. We’re talking about a ‘Dramatic New Approach’, meaning that we gradually turn up our cars’ visual volume. The concept car’s exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we’ve been even more daring – there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective.”

Volvo S60 Concept teaser photo released

In cooperation with Swedish glassworks Orrefor, Volvo is currently working on a new concept car, which will be on display at the Detroit Motor Show in January and which will be the starting point for the development of the next generation Volvo S60. As we can see in this teaser photo, the concept will feature a crystal panel integrated into the dashboard which creates a very interesting glass-crystal center panel that stretches all the way to the backseats.

“If you want to explore the full scope of Scandinavian design, Sweden’s glassworks are a natural source of inspiration. Large glass areas are very much part of modern Swedish architecture, creating the special, light transparency,” says Steve Mattin, Volvo Cars design director.
