Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag Review

Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag

A cousin of mine asked me to go on a 2-week trip around the country a few years ago and I’ve accepted right from the start because I needed a vacation badly. Anyway, the first question that came into my mind was: Where I am going to carry all the stuff that I need? Back then I had a mid-size car and there simply wasn’t enough space to transport all the items that I needed. Mentioning this to my cousin, he said that I should buy a car cargo bag so I started searching for one.

Of course, I could have opted for a regular cargo box but I didn’t like the extra weight plus these are a little bit more expensive and I didn’t want to spend that much. So, I’ve began my search of finding a good roof luggage bag and after a while I’ve stumbled upon the Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag which I liked right from the start as it can be easily attached to both factory installed and aftermarket luggage racks.

Installing It

As I’ve told you before, I wanted something that can be installed and taken off without any effort so this is why I chose a car cargo bag. To fit one of these to the roof of your car, all you have to do is attach the straps to the rack over the carrier and you’re done. After you’re done using it, it can be folded up small so it won’t occupy too much space. What I’ve learned from experience is that these car top bags have to be packed full. The reason for this is to make sure that the bag material will not flap in the wind.

The Thule roof bag I’ve mentioned was a piece of cake to install as it fitted between the crossbars of the rack and was secured through the heavy-duty cargo buckles, double stitched webbing and the anchoring rings. Thanks to these straps and buckles, you can easily attach the bag to the front & rear crossbars, to the elements of the rack on the sides, or both of them by using the bundled four attachment straps so if you need versatility, this would be a top choice. You can easily modify the position of the bag when it is draped over the car by using the included reinforced handles that are located along the side straps of the Thule 867 Tahoe.

What Material Should I Choose?

This is a crucial question that you must think about because it is imperative to buy a roof luggage bag that is made out of a resistant material. The most affordable products are made from a thin material and have flimsy zippers so you should avoid these at all costs. What you should be interested in are those models that are made from polyester as it is UV resistant so it will be able to resist in various weather conditions. Avoid purchasing one that is made from standard nylon because after a while it will most likely break down under the sun.

Out of the many available cargo roof bags, a top choice would be buying one which is weather resistant. Such products have a dual-layered material along with a vinyl backing. A premium model will feature liner systems and urethane coated zippers to keep the water away from infiltrating in the car cargo bag.

The one I’ve bought, the Thule cargo bag, has been designed to do just that, be weather resistant. To give you a few ideas about its built quality, they’ve made it from very tough PVC-coated nylon (so not the regular nylon you should stay away from) and features taped seams and storm flaps in order to guarantee that all of your belongings remain dry and safe at all times. In addition, it has been fitted with Velcro-lined zipper pulls that add an additional layer of protection as it secures each end to the other so you don’t have to worry that that the zipper is not sealed at all times against the forces of nature. The bundled storage bag of this model will protect it against incidental moisture or dirt.

Features

Before rushing into buying a product without looking at its specifications, have a look and see what are the main features of a soft rooftop cargo carrier. First of all, you must find out its dimensions to see if it is suitable for the car that you drive. The aforementioned Thule roof bag measures 41” x 34” x 18” and has a curb weight of 10 lbs (4.5 kg).

Some of the other reasons that made me buy this one would have to be the internal mesh storage pockets which allowed me to carry smaller items. The easy opening system via the 3-sided zipper is very comfortable to use and after you’re done using it, it collapses fast & compact.

The one I have is expandable from 15 to 17 cubic feet or up to 165 lbs of cargo. Don’t forget to verify the roof’s weight capacity which you can find in the owner’s manual. It has an internal foam structure which will protect all of the contents, plus it retains the bag’s shape when you load & unload it.

How Much Should I Pay For One?

This is really up to you, depending on how much you want to spend and the type of product you want to choose. The one I’ve bought a few years ago is available at the moment on Amazon for $179.95. Buying it now will give you a 10% discount because normally the price tag for this model is $199.95. In addition, you can benefit from free shipping through the retailer’s Super Saver Shipping.

Feedback

One of the many reasons why I was convinced to buy the Thule cargo bag is because most of the reviews I’ve read were extremely positive. The vast majority of the people that bought it liked the fact that it is very easy to use and it really is 100% waterproof.

It Can’t Be Perfect. Or Is It?

Of course, there were some negative reviews as well. Somebody was saying that after it rained for a while, all of the items in the roof bag got soaked. My guess is that it was a manufacturing error because most people liked that it can keep off the rain. Anyway, he got his money back from Amazon.

Where Can I Buy It?

If you have made up your mind and you want to buy this product, you can find it on Amazon where it probably has the lowest price tag.
