The 2012 Honda Insight Hybrid is already available on order in the United States where it carries a base price tag of $19,120, including the destination fee ($770). This means that the 2012MY is $150 more expensive than the model it replaces. What’s new? A few mild cosmetic updates inside and out, along with more goodies for certain models and 1 mpg increase over the entire lineup.

On the outside, the 2012 Insight has a new front grille that features a thin, blue accent bar, while both the front and rear bumpers have been revised. Other than that, the headlights and the brake light graphics have been tweaked while the modifications brought to the underbody of the car have increased the Insight’s aerodynamic performances by 2%. The exterior look is completed with the new alloys design and wheel covers.

As for the interior cabin, the rear seat bench has been reconfigured and now it offers more head and leg room. The gauge cluster background has also been revised, along with refined seat fabrics, and reshaped center console beverage holders that now are able to accommodate larger drinks. The LX and EX models also come with a more supportive front armrest.

The Japanese automaker also mentioned that the rearward visibility has been improved thanks to the implementation of a more compactly mounted rear wiper motor housing, along with a rear spoiler which is now thinner. In addition, the 2012 Insight benefits from thicker noise-insulation materials.

Some of the equipment upgrades that we have to mention include steering wheel-mounted audio controls for the LX model, while the more expensive EX gets Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, along with automatic headlights.

The car continues to feature the IMA system developed by Honda which consists of a 1.3-liter i-VTEC gasoline power unit along with a 10 kW electric motor. The combined output is of 98 hp @ 5,800 rpm while the peak torque is 123 lb.-ft available between 1,000 and 1,700 rpm. The company’s engineers have managed to diminish the friction in the CVT gearbox and the engine.
