2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster

Revealed last month, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster has made its first public appearance in Stuttgart, Germany. One of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a lot), the third generation of the SLK has an aluminum hood capped by a more traditional upright radiator grille. I like that they’ve added back the side grilles on the front quarter panels, similar to the company’s roadsters of the 50s. The drag coefficient has been improved, now standing at 0.30, in comparison with the 0.32 Cd of the outgoing model.

Being a roadster, the drop-top is very important. This hard-paneled automatic “Vario-roof” has a “Magic Sky Control” center panel. The engineers over at Mercedes decided to use a trick glass panel by utilizing LCD-type technology that goes from almost clear (when voltage is applied), to almost opaque (when it loses its charge); instead of using the traditional opaque solid steel roof.

At first, the car will only be available with a V6 3.5-liter engine that churns 302 hp – this will be the SLK350. Later on, the SLK250 will be introduced, featuring a 4-cylinder direct-injected 1.8-liter engine that outputs 201 hp. No info about the SLK55 AMG has been revealed but certainly there will be an AMG version of the SLK.
