The Chevrolet SSR is considered an anomaly in the car industry and combines the look of a customized 1950s pickup with the powertrain of a sports car. The name of the car stands for Super Sport Roadster while the engineers chose to use the General Motor’s midsize SUV platform. The car has only two seats, a meager towing capacity and a narrow pickup bed.
This Chevrolet car was manufactured between 2003 and 2006 and it was based on the Super Sport Roadster concept car displayed at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show. The car looks like no other car available on the market and is a pure automotive style statement. When you see it you go back in the ‘60s or the ‘70s, because it truly looks like a muscle car manufactured in that era. The Chevrolet SSR could be a fun choice if you are interested in a car that combines the boasts postwar cruiser image with modern touches including high-tech components and reliability. This amazing car looks incredible and is unique in the car industry market. The SSR mirrors are placed in the traditional location and not on the A-pillar while the ridge line is maintained in the hood and accentuates the grill and the front fascia of the car as well. The car has 20 inches wheels equipped with Goodyear Eagle RS-A (Rally Sport-Asymmetric) all seasons performance tires.

The interior was improved each year and the company used high quality materials providing this car with a more luxurious and expensive look. The standard features include leather upholstery, a power-operated convertible hardtop, keyless entry, a cruise control and power accessories. As optional features the buyer can choose an improved audio system, auto-dimming mirrors and heated seats. But the interior of the car has some disadvantages regarding the placement of the controls on the dashboard. In addition to this the trip odometer is below the instrument cluster so it’s impossible to read it from a comfortable driving position. But all in all, the SSR interior atmosphere is cozy and luxurious and makes all the minor complaints vanish from our mind.
The most recent models suffered a few changes during the production. During its first year of production, the Chevrolet SSR was equipped with a 5.7 liter V8 engine producing 350 horsepower and had a weight of 4,700 pounds. The Chevrolet SSR is 191.6 inches long and 78.6 inches wide. In 2005, the SSR started hosting a 6.0 liters engine which could reach 400 horsepower. The SSR uses a four speed automatic transmission with lockup torque converter. The car can go from zero to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and accelerates up to 125 mph.
When it comes to the safety of the driver and the passenger, the Chevrolet SSR is modestly equipped. The standard package includes front and side torso airbags, antilock brakes and traction control. The suspension that equipped the car was capable to maintain the body roll under control. The Chevrolet SSR comes with a four wheel drive system with ABS and electronic brake-force distribution. The car has rear shock absorbers mounted outboard of the frame rails offering a softer ride.
In 2012 a new Chevrolet SSR model will be released and will feature some impressive modern items. The car will come with a lockable pickup box with a cargo capacity of 22.5 cubic feet. It will be equipped with a 6.0 liters V8 engine producing 390 horsepower and being able to reach 60 mph in 5.49 seconds.
The base price for this Chevrolet SSR is $38,500 and can reach $47,000 with all the options available included.
