2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition

A few days ago at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auction the first 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition was auctioned and it managed to grab no less than $600,000. The entire amount of money will be going to charity.

2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition

This special car borrows styling cues from the ZR1 and Z06 models and it is marketed as being the fastest convertible Corvette that was ever made. The car is powered by the 7.0-liter LS7 engine from the Z06, an engine that is capable of developing 505 hp (512 PS / 377 kW) and a maximum torque of 470 lb.-ft (637 Nm).

2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition

By installing a bunch of carbon fiber parts, the engineers have managed to reduce the weight of the car to 3,355 pounds (1,522 kg). Some of the parts that got this material include the floor panels, hood, fenders, rocker panels and the front splitter. Thanks to these modifications, the car is capable of doing the 0-62 mph sprint in 3.8 seconds, on its way to a top speed of more than 190 mph. The quarter-mile can be done in 11.8 seconds.

Corvette ZR1 by TIKT revealed

Corvette ZR1 by TIKT

TIKT is a German tuner and its latest project is based on the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Known as the Triple X, it comes with a significant aerodynamic package as well as massive modifications under its hood. By remapping the ECU, installing a modified supercharger system and a specially developed exhaust, the engine in this ZR1 generates 758 hp and a peak torque of 910 Nm.

Corvette ZR1 by TIKT

If our math is right, this means that the engine is 120 hp more powerful than the one in the standard ZR1. In order to accommodate the extra oomph, the German engineers from TIKT had to install new cylinder heads and camshafts, a larger throttle valve, strengthened valve springs and a more efficient cooling system.

Corvette ZR1 by TIKT

In addition, the Corvette ZR1 by TIKT comes with a 50 mm lowered suspension on the front axle and 30 mm on the rear axle. Other modifications include lightweight alloy wheels and racing shock absorbers. The body kit developed for this tuning includes a new front bumper that has bigger air intakes, along with new fenders, side skirts, front splitter and a huge rear wing made from carbon fiber.

Chevrolet brings two affordable coupe concepts to NAIAS

Chevrolet Code 130R

This year at the Detroit Motor Show, General Motors brought two Chevrolet sports coupe concepts that offer seating for four while staying on a strict budget. Both concepts were developed based on the feedback that GM received from young consumers in the U.S. in 2011.

Chevrolet Code 130R

The first one wears the name Code 130R which even though looks like its wearing a Corvette face and Camaro tail lamps, its size, proportions and the profile remind us of the BMW 1-Series Coupe but considerably more attractive.

Chevrolet Code 130R

Wearing a red metallic paint with matte anodized rims, the car can be considered as a classic GT and it comes with a rear-wheel drive system and a front-mounted engine. It is motivated by a 1.4-liter Turbo Ecotec engine that features the eAssist micro-hybrid technology developed by General Motors for reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Chevrolet Tru 140S

The second concept unveiled at NAIAS this year is the Tru 140S which is a more modern take on a small sports coupe. It has a 1.4-liter Turbo Ecotec power unit and features eAssist with a FWD configuration.

Chevrolet Tru 140S

According to GM, this engine can produce approximately 150 hp and is capable of returing 40 mpg on both concepts. If these concepts will see the light of day, their price will be “in the low $20,000s”.

360-degree flip in a Chevrolet Sonic

General Motors came up with a brilliant idea for promoting the new Chevrolet Sonic subcompact. They’ve teamed up with professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek who swapped his usual four-wheel plywood for a 5-door Sonic in order to perform a 360-degree “kickflip”. There were two 50-foot ramps, one to launch off the car and another one to land it. Between these two ramps there was a massive skateboard.

This advertising scheme was part of the automaker’s “Let’s do this” campaign for the funky hatchback and it follows the previous “Sonic Skydive” where the car was parachuted from a plane at an altitude of 14,000 ft. Part of this campaign was also the “Sonic Bungee Jump” where the vehicle was launched from a 100-ft tower while it was tied to an elastic bungee cord.

Pretty cool, right? Here’s the “kickflip” video:

Chevrolet Volt priced in China at $75,533

The biggest car market in the world is in China where General Motors have been leading the sales figures for 6 six years in a row and by the end of 2011 they plan on delivering more than two million units. In order to achieve this goal, GM will introduce the Volt model which will be available through 13 Shanghai GM Chevrolet dealerships in eight cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Foshan, Shenzhen, Wuxi, Suzhou, Guangzhou and Hangzhou.

This announcement occurred this week during the 2011 Auto Guangzhou exhibition where GM’s local joint ventures, SAIC-GM-Wulling and Shanghai GM are exhibiting more than 30 Buicks, Baojuns, Cadillacs and Chevys.

The bad news for Chinese people would have to be the very steep price of the Chevrolet Volt. When it will be available for purchase, GM’s extended-range hybrid is going to cost a hefty $75,533 which is almost double the price compared to the car’s price tag in the United States. Those who will afford to buy the car will also be able to join in the V+Club, which is an all-day bilingual hotline that offers one-on-one service. The owner of the Volt will also be invited to participate in various “green” activities.

2013 U.S.-spec Chevrolet Spark

The Chevrolet Spark was introduced in regions like Europe and Asia back in 2009 but it was this week when the car made its official debut on the North American continent with the occasion of the Los Angeles Auto Show. This is a four-seat, five-door subcompact hatchback that looks a lot like a toy and it will be available in the U.S. and Canada.

The 2013 U.S.-spec Chevrolet Spark will be available only with a tiny 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine that develops 85 hp and is linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. Even though that we are dealing with a very small car, General Motors has mentioned that the Spark offers more room for passengers and their luggage in comparison with other mini cars like the Smart ForTwo, Scion iQ and the cute Fiat 500. None of these cars, except for the Spark, come in a 5-door configuration.

2013 U.S.-spec Chevrolet Spark

The Euro-spec Spark managed to grab a four-star rating when the guys from Euro NCAP tested it, scoring very high in child and adult protection categories (78% and 81% respectively). The good news is that the U.S.-spec version promises to be even safer than that, offering 10 airbags in the standard configuration along with the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system that isn’t available for the European model.

2013 U.S.-spec Chevrolet Spark

Other than that, the North American variant of the Spark will come with GM’s OnStar system that uses GPS and cellular phone technology in order to call for help automatically in case of an accident. The 2013 Chevrolet Spark also features the MyLink infotainment system which is standard for the 1LT and 2LT trim levels. With this system, owners of the Spark can transfer music libraries, access Stitcher internet radio and Pandora, and navigation via Bluetooth-connected smartphones.
