2013 Acura RDX

Honda’s Acura sub-brand has introduced earlier this week the 2013 RDX crossover in its production version at the Chicago Auto Show, after unveiled a pre-production prototype in January at the Detroit Motor Show.

2013 Acura RDX

The new model is powered by a naturally aspirated V6 3.5-liter engine which replaces the old 4-cylinder turbocharged 2.3-liter that equips the outgoing model. The new power unit produces 273 hp (277 PS / 203 kW), making it 33 hp more powerful than its predecessor. The engine is now mated to an all-new six-speed automatic gearbox that has a lock-up torque converter. The 2013 Acura RDX is going to be available in both FWD and AWD versions.

2013 Acura RDX

Acura says that the body of the RDX has been aerodynamically enhanced in comparison to the previous model. The crossover now rides on a new set of 18-inch, 5-spoke alloys as standard and benefits from a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear configuration.

Acura plans on producing the new 2013 RDX at its East Liberty factory located in Ohio.

2013 Acura ILX

Scheduled to go on sale this spring, the 2013 Acura ILX made its official debut this week at the Chicago Auto Show. The Japanese automaker promises that the car is fully capable of combining performance, luxury and efficiency with affordability while at the same time not forgetting about the environment.

The electric motor generates 20 hp and gets its necessary juice from the lithium-ion battery pack. The 2013 Acura ILX is capable of offering a total output of 111 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 127 lb.-ft between 1,000 and 3,000 rpm.

2013 Acura ILX

The car is also available with a traditional 4-cylinder 2.0-liter power unit that outputs 150 hp at 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 140 lb.-ft available at 4,300 rpm. Mated to a 5-speed automatic Sequential SportShift transmission, the car can return 24 mpg city / 32 mpg highway.

2013 Acura ILX

For those who need more performance, the new ILX can be ordered with a beefier 2.4-liter engine that delivers 201 hp at 7,000 rpm and 170 lb.-ft of torque reached at 4,300 rpm. This engine is linked to a 6-speed, close-ratio manual gearbox and allows the vehicle to return 20 mpg city / 29 mpg highway.

2013 Acura ILX

We should also mention that the 2013 Acura ILX features a MacPherson strut front suspension while at the back it adopts a multi-link configuration. Other than that, the car comes with four-channel anti-lock brakes, VSA – Vehicle Stability Assist and Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering.

2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata special edition

Next week at the Chicago Auto Show, the Japanese automaker Mazda will be bringing a special edition of the popular MX-5 Miata which will feature a Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) that has a black finish. This is a novelty for the model because it will be for the very first time in the car’s history when the color of the top does not match the one applied on the bodywork.

This special version of the Miata will be available with a choice of two new exterior colors, along with a bunch of black exterior accents, a new set of 17-inch black gunmetal alloys, piano black interior finishes and black heater leather seats.

Aside from this model, Mazda will also be bringing to Chicago the Star Mazda Championship Open-Wheel Race Car, a first generation 1990 Mazda Miata, the Dempsey Racing No. 4 GRAND-AM Road Racing Race Car and the Mazda Turbo2 Concept that we’ve first seen last November at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

According to Chicago Sun-Times, three men were arrested for causing $30,000 worth of damage to seven Toyota cars at the Chicago Auto Show. When they were asked about their actions, they said that they were angry due to the fact that more and more American Toyota jobs have been relocated overseas.

All of them were charged with one felony count of criminal damage to property, after slashing the seats and ripping out the interior of a Prius, a Land Cruiser, two Tundra pickups, a RAV4 and a Lexus ES 350.

The authorities caught the bad guys Wednesday night as they used screwdrivers and razor knives to damage the speaker panels and the dashboard of a Toyota Camry.

A Toyota spokesman replied that not all of the cars that were vandalized were built overseas.

2012 US-Spec Audi TT-RS

We have good news and bad news about the US-spec 2012 Audi TT-RS. The good news is that back in September last year the German automaker said that they will be bringing the TT-RS in the United States. The bad news is that they will bring only 1,000 units of the car, or at least that is what they said at the Chicago Auto Show a couple of days ago. The TT-RS will be $10,000 more expensive in comparison with TTS model, which has a starting price of $51,000. The TT-RS will be available at US dealerships at the end of this summer.

2012 US-Spec Audi TT-RS

The car will feature a 5-cylinder 2.5-liter turbocharged engine that will be 20 hp more powerful in comparison to its European sibling, rounding up the total output to an impressive 360 hp. This power unit will be exclusively mated to a traditional 6-speed manual gearbox, allowing the TT-RS to do the 0-62 mph sprint in only 4.6 seconds. We don’t know its top speed but it should be a little bit higher thanks to the extra 20 ponies under the hood.

2012 US-Spec Audi TT-RS

If you didn’t know, the TT-RS is the most powerful and expensive TT money can buy these days and it is easily distinguishable by its high-gloss black single frame grille with a frame in matte aluminum appearance. It also sports xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, imposing side sills, exterior-mirror casings in a matte aluminum look (which I really don’t like) and cool massive rims in a 5 twin-spoke design.

2012 US-Spec Audi TT-RS

Inside the cabin, the 2012 Audi TT-RS sports heated sports seats that are wrapped in a leather and Alcantara combination with a silver contrasting stitching and the embossed “TT RS” logo. It also has aluminum pedals and a leather multifunction sports steering wheel.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition

A few days ago we’ve talked about Miata’s Guinness World Record. After rolling out the 900,000 unit of the MX-5, the Japanese automaker had a great idea – to make a special edition that would commemorate this important achievement. They will be making only 750 units of this model which they will most likely be sold in a few hours, onto their goal to sell 1,000,000 Miatas.

This special edition MX-5 will be available with one of the two exterior paintworks: Dolphin Gray Mica or Sparkling Black Mica. The Miata will sit on a brand new set of 17-inch bright-finish alloy rims. Inside the cabin, you’ll find a couple of exclusive interior accents, like a gray door trim, heated leather seats that have a gray stitching, a new steering wheel,  instruments and vents with chrome accents, a parking brake covered in black leather with gray stitching and aluminum pedals of the models fitted with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition

I wished that they would have made some upgrades to the car’s engine but the standard one is pretty competent. The Miata’s 4-cylinder 2.0-liter produces 167 hp when it is linked to the manual gearbox and 158 hp when mated to the automatic transmission.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition

The Japanese automaker Mazda said that this special edition will have a basic price of $30,925 for the models equipped with the manual transmission while the units fitted with the automatic gearbox will cost from $31,525. The Special Edition will be available with either a soft-top or a PRHT – power retractable hard top.

2012 Hyundai Genesis

I’ve always considered the Hyundai Genesis a more affordable S-Class due to its aesthetics resemblances, especially in the front. The 2012 model follows the same recipe as the previous generations but I have to say that it looks very nice. If someone showed me the car without the Hyundai badge, I’d probably say that no way this could be a Korean car.

2012 Hyundai Genesis

Presented yesterday at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show, the most interesting improvement over the older model is the flagship version, dubbed R-Spec, which benefits from a powerful V8 5.0-liter engine that features a high-pressure direct injection system. In addition, the engineers at Hyundai said that they also improved the V6 direct injection engine and have added a brand new 8-speed gearbox.

2012 Hyundai Genesis

The new generation of the V6 3.6-liter engine offers 15% more ponies than the previous unit, which means that it is capable of outputting 333 hp, quite impressive for a Hyundai. In addition, the engine is now more fuel efficient and the CO2 emissions have been reduced.

2012 Hyundai Genesis

Design-wise, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis got a more aggressive front fascia and grille along with new headlights with LED daytime running lights, folding mirrors with integrated puddle lamps and sportier rocker panels. The car now sits on 17-inch alloy rims and the rear lights have been restyled.

Unfortunately we can’t offer you any info about top speed or the 0-62 mph sprint time as Chevrolet didn’t said anything about them, but I’m sure they will anytime soon.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

In addition to this very impressive engine, the new ZL1 features a bundle of technologies, like the Magnetic Ride Control, along with the vented carbon fiber hood insert and the updated aerodynamics. Toyota’s PR department is working as fast as it can to place the huge recalls the carmaker has made in a more positive light, but it seems that one thing managed to slip out of the scrutiny with which any marketing stunt is subjected: the Toyota Avalon singers.

It seems that Toyota didn’t notice the huge failure GM scored with the Chevrolet Volt song and dance, and decided that the new Avalon, which was presented at the Chicago Auto Show, would benefit from having live singers alongside it.

The result? Not pretty at all. Hit the jump to see what I mean.

During this year’s Chicago Auto Show, Ford revealed two new editions for its popular Transit Connect model, which was recently named the 2010 North American Truck of the Year, trumping other extremely popular vehicles.

The first edition is the aptly named Transit Connect Electric, which is presented as more of a fleet solution, for companies which operate inside a city and have a central hub that can work as a recharge stations. With a range of 80 miles and the possibility to be recharged from either a 120 or 240 volt socket, the TCE looks pretty interesting, but in case you really want a zero-emissions model from the Blue Oval, wait for the Focus electric, due to appear next year.

The other model, named the Transit Connect Taxi, promises to be more useful, and a great replacement for the aging Crown Victoria, which has been serving as a cab model for quite some time. Don’t go thinking that this is just a regular Transit with a yellow paint job, as even though it will be powered by the regular 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine like other models, Ford will offer to convert the vehicle so that it can run with compressed natural gas or propane fuels, making it more efficient than other taxi models.

A special version Ford Work Solutions will be implemented in the TCT, which offers high speed Internet and navigation to the driver. Rear passengers will also enjoy various entertainment options, as well as a credit card swipe station. High end solutions might also include an 8.4-inch screen in the back seat, that can offer various types of information, from monuments and tourist sites to stock market data.

Couple all of these features with the ease of getting in and out of the Transit Connect, thanks to the sliding doors and its big capacity, and the TCT looks extremely good.

After Hyundai presented its Blue-Will plug-in hybrid, it was only natural that Kia will showcase its own take on that type of technology. After a bit of teasing, the South Korean company has presented the Ray PHEV at the Chicago Auto Show, which is going these days in the windy city.

The model, presented as a pure concept, will use a 151 HP 1.4-liter petrol engine (smaller than the Hyundai concept), mated with a 78kW electric motor, powered by a pack of lithium-ion batteries. According to Kia, the car can go for 50 miles on electric power alone, averaging 202.3 mpg, and around 750 miles using the combined power output, averaging 77.6 mpg.

These impressive figures are due to the great aerodynamics of the car, having a drag coefficient of just 0.25. Even though it mimics other hybrid shapes like the Toyota Prius or the Honda Insight, the Ray also has such features as a one-piece underbody and slim 20-inch wheels wrapped in low-resistance tires.

Weight was also saved on the inside of this concept, with the use of mesh seats made from lightweight materials, with mesh also being used on the door inserts. Notable features include the solar panels on the roof, which provide more power to the heater, a Microsoft-designed infotainment system and the presence of rear-hinged “suicide doors”.

While some of you may think this concept is previewing a production model, voices are saying that Kia will use it only as a presentation for the technology, and offer it on already established models like the Cee’d hatchback. For that purpose, the company also unveiled that a sub brand, called EcoDynamics, will be introduced to highlight the most fuel efficient vehicles in its lineup.

The Kia Ray concept can be admired at the Chicago Auto Show and below, in our photo gallery.
