With Mini facing some real competition from the 180 hp Fiat Punto Abarth SS and the 197 hp Renault Motorsport 197, the engineers over at John Cooper Works (JCW), Mini’s tuning division, put their heads to use and created this performance kit for the Mini Cooper. The car, which you can see here, in the spy shots taken by the guys at WCF on the Nurburgring track, will be powered be a modified version of the 1.6 turbocharged engine, which is expected to deliver around 215 hp and also got other improvements, like a JCW exhaust system, larger JCW brakes and a JCW sport suspension.

The JCW Mini has a restyled body kit, with new front and rear bumpers, side skirts and new 18 inch JCW GP Limited Edition wheels. The sporty Mini is expected to debut at next year’s 2007 Geneva Motor Show with sales probably starting around summer 2008. See more spy photos after the jump.

German tuner AV Schnitzer released a tuning package for the new Mini Cooper. The R56 Mini is powered by a 170 hp turbo engine and features a performance exhaust system with chrome tailpipe, plus AC Schnitzer racing suspension.

The body kit includes a body-color front spoiler and contrasting rear skirt with integrated diffuser. You also have the possibility to choose Schnitzer’s alloy wheels in 17 and 18-inch sizes. The interior has aluminum pedals and a gauge package. (more…)

BMW announced today that all Mini models will get fuel saving technologies by August. The three main technologies used include brake energy regeneration, automatic start-stop, and switch point display(this will help drivers of manual transmission MINIs to select the most economical gear in which to drive by analyzing speed, road situation and accelerator pedal position and based on this data calculates optimum gearing.

With the changes, the MINI Cooper D will be capable of returning an astonishing 72.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 104g/km. Fuel economy improvements range from 6.5% for the Mini One to 12.8% for the Cooper D. Despite the reductions, the Cooper D is the only car in the range that remains under 120g/km. (more…)
