2009 Nissan Xterra

First order of business, General Motors is recalling almost 14,000 units of the 2011 Buick Lucerne and Cadillac CTS cars because of a possible risk of fire due to a steering fluid leak. Nissan is also going to recall 605,000 cars for problems at the batteries and the steering wheel column. The same situation goes for Chrysler who is recalling 16,000 Jeep Liberty units that have a faulty windshield-wiper system.

The steering fuel leak in the Cadillac CTS and the Buick Lucerne is most likely caused by either an alternator cable that is touching the steering return line and causes the steering line to wear through or by the starter. The steering fluid may cause fire ignitions if it leaks onto hot engine components.

The General Motors automobiles that are recalled are all equipped with V8 engines. Owners of these cars should take the cars to the dealerships in order to have the lines either secured or rerouted in order to prevent any unfortunate accidents. The owners of the cars do not have to pay any money for this intervention.

2008 Jeep Liberty

Second order of business, Nissan is recalling 303, 000 Frontier trucks and 283, 000 Xterra sport utility vehicles due to a faulty steering-column caused by corrosion that most likely limits the movement of the lower joint and in some cases, crack the steering shift. Nissan is also recalling 18, 500 Sentra cars due to a battery flaw. This defect is in the car’s positive cable terminal and can cause serious difficulty when stalling at low speeds or starting the vehicle. All the cars are manufactured between 2001 and 2010. According to Nissan, no accidents or injuries have occurred due to these technical problems. The company will start notifying its customers this December and the intervention to the cars will be free of charge.

Last order of business, Chrysler is also recalling the Jeep Liberty SUV’s manufactured in 2008 because there is a major possibility that water might get into the windshield-wiper motor and cause the car’s wipers to stop working. The customers that are affected by this can take their cars to the dealerships where the mechanics will replace the windshield-wiper free of charge.

According to Automotive News, GM is very ambitious with its future plans. In a telephone conversation with Cadillac spokesman Nick Twork, they were told Cadillac is currently planning a model positioned below the CTS which will be a direct competitor to BMW’s 3-Series and Mercedes’ C-Class. In order to be successful with the model, Cadillac plans on investin $190 million in the Lansing Grand River assembly plant which will produce the model. No details were released on the model’s name or when production will start.

“We will have a car positioned below the CTS in our lineup to compete with the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes Benz C-Class” Mr. Twork said. These statements are also backed by a recent GM press release, where the company’s CEO Dan Akerson said that “America’s fastest-growing luxury brand this year is about to get even more competitive with the addition of an all-new small luxury car [..] This investment demonstrates GM’s commitment to Cadillac and to a strong U.S. manufacturing base.”

Last week we revealed a report containing all of the new features that might be implemented in the new and improved OnStar system on vehicles from General Motors.

Now, GM has officially revealed what new things will be implemented in its next gen infotainment system.

First off, the voice recognition system has been improved, in order to allow drivers and passengers to better control the systems of the car. Secondly, the Bluetooth connection will support full phonebook integration, while the navigation system has been improved. You will also be able to connect to traffic management and weather alert services in order to stay informed on trips.

OnStar will also launch a new MyLink series of mobile apps for smartphones, including ones for iPhones and those running Android OS. These will basically act like your virtual key, allowing you to lock and unlock the car, start the engine and other such things.

Here’s the more interesting part, the rumored Facebook and voice texting support. These features are still in the testing, but OnStar will allow you to post audio Facebook updates, as well as read aloud updates from your friend feed.

The voice texting part has also been confirmed, but not in the way that you were expecting. When you will receive a text message, OnStar will read it for you, and allow you to select pre-recorded messages, like “I’m driving”. This will be achieved using only your voice. Those that wanted speech-to-text capability are going to be disappointed, as GM might not implement such a thing, in order to keep from distracting the driver.

Overall, the OnStar system is becoming extremely robust, and might constitute a big advantage for GM cars in front of its rivals. What do you think?

GM wants to really capture the compact segment in its home country. It’s main weapon is the new Chevrolet Cruze sedan, which is already being shipped to dealerships as we speak.

Marketing is now being kicked into overdrive for the compact sedan, and the US carmaker has already revealed two ads. The first, New Kid, showcases just how many features the new Cruze packs as opposed to its rivals and to its whole segment.

The second gets more specific, targeting the current compact top dog, the Toyota Corolla. In it, Chevrolet highlights a few things the Cruze has standard, as opposed to the Corolla’s optional features.

Both are narrated by actor Tim Allen and are worth a view, check them out after the jump.

The newest battle zone for General Motors and Ford is in terms of infotainment services, with GM boasting OnStar and Ford having the SYNC system.

Seeing as how Sync is still top dog, especially in its newest form, the MyFord/MyLincoln Touch versions, GM is planning a healthy upgrade to its OnStar service in order to expand its capabilities.

According to the latest batch of rumors, things might get pretty interesting for OnStar customers. It seems that the service will get Facebook capability, as well as the ability to respond to SMS messages with your own voice and even built-in functionality for the Trapster app.

First off, it seems that OnStar will use its voice recognition software to allow you to publish audio updates to your own Facebook page. While this idea sounds a bit weird, it might really help those that can’t get enough of the social network.

Secondly, when you receive text messages, OnStar will read them out for you and then let you reply to them by choosing four pre-determined messages through the voice command system. Not exactly what some might have in mind, but if it helps reduce distracted driving, we’re all for it.

The last rumor is a bit of stretch, but it might happen. Trapster, a popular mobile phone app which lets you know where police radars or traps are located, might be incorporated into OnStar. This is reinforced by the fact that a Cadillac CTS-V Coupe with manufacturer plates has recently been spotted around the Trapster HQ and will be used by the company in the 11-99 Foundation Car Drive.

The new and improved OnStar is set to be revealed next week, so until then, we can only guess what new features will be added.

The Chevrolet Volt has been heavily hyped in the last few months, as we’re rapidly approaching the launch date of the extended-range electric vehicle.

Now, General Motors has finally pinned a date on when the official production will start at the Detroit-Hamtramck. On November 11, the first car, Job 1, will officially roll off the assembly line.

Currently the plant still manufactures pre-production Volt models, which will be used by GM in its private fleets and tested by its employees. The model is currently undergoing evaluation and rating by the EPA and other federal bodies, but everything should go along smoothly.

With production starting in November, expect the Volt to be available around December in the first preferred markets. These include California, New York, Washington and Texas. The Chevrolet Volt will be sold with a starting price of $41,000.

New reports coming from Germany seem to indicate that General Motors might have some large expansion plans for its European brand Opel.

More specifically, it seems that the US corporation wants the Opel brand to be present in other markets except Europe, like the China, Australia or South America.

Traditionally, Opel models are usually rebadged before entering such markets, bearing Buick, Holden or even Chevrolet logos instead of the Opel one.

This will change, as Opel will most likely be marketed as a more premium brand, in order to capitalize on customers who want European cars and can afford them, not just the locally-badged Opel models.

No official word has been revealed, but GM might be on the right track if it will decide Opel’s expansion, given the popularity of new models like the Insignia or the new generation Astra.

Last year, General Motors was seriously tight for cash, and applied a series of cost-cutting measures to focus on mainstream models. One of those decisions was putting the performance division on stand by, eliminating the possibility of future powerful cars anytime soon.

Now, as things are looking up for the US carmaker, the company’s vice president of performance and motorsports division, Jim Campbell, has revealed that GM will focus more on compact performance models, which should appeal to those that can’t really afford a Cadillac CTS-V, for example.

Voices are already pointing out the new Chevrolet Cruze, but also the upcoming 2012 Chevrolet Aveo models, which both promise to open up the compact segment to GM. Performance SS versions might seriously help this endeavor, especially as how the Chevrolet Aveo RS concept (pictured above) was positively received when it made its debut in Detroit.

While this may not exactly confirm that performance versions of the Chevrolet Cruze or an Aveo are coming, it’s nice to hear that GM is once again turning its head to performance models.

A few weeks ago, a fresh batch of rumors concerning the next generation Chevrolet Corvette, the C7, appeared. Among the tidbits of information were details of a mid-engined chassis, possibly with a V6 unit, as well as a wet dual-cluth transmission, courtesy of Saab.

Now, Karl Stracke, the General Motors vice president of global engineering has talked about these rumors, and, wouldn’t you know it, shot them down.

According to Stracke, the next Corvette will keep its front-engine platform, and will still use a V8 engine. More specifically, a new direct injection small block V8, which is currently being prepared for the heavy duty pickup trucks in the GM range.

The possibility of a wet dual clutch transmission has also been denied, as the assemblies are too costly to manufacture and aren’t that reliable. Instead, one can expect a dry dual-clutch gearbox in the future.

Stracke also went on to say that a hybrid powertrain may appear in the future, seeing as how other supercars are currently testing out such technologies.

So, the next Chevrolet Corvette C7 will keep its V8 in the front, but might get some help from an electric motor and a new transmission. How does that sound to you? Share your thoughts below.

It’s been a long time coming and rumored to death in the last few months, but General Motors has officially filed in the paperwork for its impending Initial Public Offering.

This is the moment many American tax payers were waiting, as their money saved GM last year.

The US automaker is ready to go public, and will offer preferred stock in order to raise an estimated $16 billion. The US treasury will be selling around a fifth of the 304 million common shares, in order to recoup the financial investment from summer of 2009.

The IPO will be led by reputed banks such as Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase & Co., Bank of America Corp. and Citigroup Inc. A date has yet to be established for the IPO, but you’d better have your broker ready in the following weeks.

Just in case you missed them, General Motors has announced another recall, this time affecting all of its crossovers based on the Lambda platform.

More specifically, among the 243,000 vehicles affected we have the 2009-2010 Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and the Saturn Outlook.

According to the company and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the crossovers have a problem with the seat belt latches, specifically those on the second row of seats. When the seats are folded and placed back up again, the latch can become stuck under a seat trim. If passengers are buckled in and want to get the latch in the proper position, the operations required might end up unlatching the seat belt without the passenger noticing.

Even if it’s somewhat hard to explain, GM is taking no chances and will be notifying owners in the following weeks and offer new seat belt latches in its dealerships.

General Motors has figured out that extended warranty offers are the way to go if you want to move more new cars and keep customers coming back to dealerships and seeing other new models.

As such, after offering free maintenance for all new Cadillac models at the beginning of summer, the company has employed a new warranty offer on all of the cars manufactured by its UK brand Vauxhall.

Accord to the company, all of the new models produced by Vauxhall will be covered by a lifetime warranty. As you can imagine, there are a few catches. The offer is only available to the first owner of the model, and is good until the odometer hits the 100,000 mile mark.

That’s a pretty short lifetime, if you ask us. Still, until that moment, Vauxhall will cover all major assemblies, including the powertrain, steering system, brake system and electrical equipment. You’ll just need to check in with your local dealership for a free inspection every year.

So, will you be taking up GM’s Vauxhall on the new lifetime warranty program? Share your thoughts below.

After the failed attempt at adding mild hybrids to its range, with the Chevrolet Malibu, the Saturn Vue and the Saturn Aura, General Motors has just announced that it will once again pursue this goal.

According to the company’s director of hybrid and electric powertrain engineering, Larry Nitz, GM will launch at least one mild hybrid model in the USA and one in China. As you can imagine, it’s quite likely that the model will be from the Buick range, given the Tri-Shield’s popularity in Asia and its improving image in America.

As we mentioned above, GM gambled before on mild hybrid tech, with the Chevy Malibu, Saturn Vue and Saturn Aura getting such systems. Sadly, when the Saturn brand was shut down, mild hybrid research was deemed too risky, and efforts went to the Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle.

Unlike full hybrids, mild ones just use the electric motor to offer a boost to the internal combustion engine, as well as facilitate a stop-start system.

Expect more details about what car will receive the technology to appear in the near future.
