Great news for all of our British readers, as current Formula 1 champion Jenson Button has just signed with UK-based McLaren yesterday, joining fellow Brit and former F1 champ Lewis Hamilton in a team which just needs to paint their cars in the Union Jack to make it all complete (don’t forget that the main sponsor is Vodafone).
Formula 1 never ceases to amaze in the last few years, and even though this season’s surprise team, Brawn GP was acquired by Mercedes-Benz in order to keep up the winning streak, the newly-formed Mercedes GP couldn’t prevent the departure of the two drivers which earned its title of best team during 2009, Rubens Barrichello and current champion Jenson Button.
Of course there were rumors about this move for quite some time, culminating with a visit from Jenson and his managers at the McLaren headquarters, but the news that Brawn GP was acquired by the German carmaker, which until then held a lot of stocks in McLaren, made the move less likely.
This change definitely impacts both Heikki Kovalainen, which will be replaced by Button, and the fate of Mercedes GP, which needs to get some top notch drivers as soon as possible.
What do you think UK F1 fans? Will we see the British racing green be revived by McLaren, or should it be kept by Lotus when it will return soon enough in F1? Leave your thoughts about this and the Button’s move by sending a comment.
