It was reintroduced 10 years ago and Daimler is willing to admit that the Maybach brand failed. Starting with 2013 when Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new generation of the S-Class, the $350,000 luxury limousine sold under the Maybach brand will be discontinued.
The revitalization of the Maybach brand started back in 1997 when the automaker displayed a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, and in 2002 they launched two versions of the vehicle, the Maybach 57 and the 62. The initial estimates made by the carmaker called for about 2,000 vehicles sold every year, with 50% going to U.S. customers. They did manage to sell more than 1,000 cars in the U.S., but over a course of 7 years. The best year for Maybach in the United States was in 2004 when they managed to sell 244 units.

Maybach Edition 125
With the occasion of this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Maybach has unveiled the Edition 125 anniversary model. Based on the 57S model, this is a one-off that brings some nice touches both for the exterior and inside the cabin.

One of the highlights of the car would have to be its front armrest that has been laser-engraved with a light motif that features the company’s badge, a double “M” in a curved triangle. Other than that, the vehicle comes with contour lightning and wears a Tahiti Black or Patagonia Silver exterior finish.

On the inside we also find silver-colored stitching, an embroidered glove compartment lid that has Wilhem Maybach’s signature, as well as silver carbon fiber and black piano lacquer trim parts. The car rides on a set of 20-inch alloys that have a matt black finish, while the front grille has a different shape.

With the occasion of launching this one-off model, the automaker also stated that the regular models will benefit from a few upgrades. Both the 52S and the longer 62S get 18 hp (13 kW) more power, for a grand total of 630 hp (463 kW). In addition, fuel consumption has been reduced to “only” 15.8 liters/ 100 km while CO2 emissions have also been lowered to 368 g/km.
Aston Martin Lagonda Concept
According to our colleges from caranddriver.com, Aston Martin’s CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez wants to resuscitate the Lagonda marquee by rolling out a Rolls Royce Ghost-sized luxury four-door. Creating an entire new platform would be very expensive and hard to do for such a small manufacturer like Aston, but by teaming up with another manufacturer, it could happen.
The British car manufacturer contacted BMW and Mercedes, but discussions with the first one broke down at the beginning of last year. They did find a partner in Mercedes and they’ve signed a deal at the end of 2010 from which we find out that Aston Martin will build the next Maybach (I never would have expected this in a million years). This agreement also calls for the German automaker to provide Aston with an SUV, some engines, and possibly a platform to replace Aston’s aging VH architecture that has been used since 2004 with the DB9 model.
Let’s face it; the Maybach was never an attractive car and probably now more than ever it needs some significant updates. It wasn’t a hit among rich people and Mercedes even thought of killing the brand, but after the significant economic boost in China, Maybachs are starting to become more popular there so for this reason the German car manufacturer has decided to give the brand another chance.
To keep costs down to a minimum, the forthcoming Maybach will use the 2013 S-Class’s hardware and platform, and it will be made in England at Aston’s factory in Gaydon. Sources inside Mercedes say that by making the new Maybach at Aston’s plant (instead of Stuttgart) will cut down the production costs by approximately 50%. We will probably see a concept of Aston’s Maybach at the Frankfurt auto show this year.
Aston Martin will use for its Lagonda sedan the platform of the Maybach/S-Class, along with the chassis, transmission and the safety equipment. The Aston Martin Lagonda will have a base price of about $350,000 and it will have to face up some serious competition coming from Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and of course, Maybach.
The British car manufacturer will also roll out an SUV based on the Merc’s ML/GL-Class unibody SUV platform. It will most likely be fitted with a V8 4.7-liter turbocharged engine, good for 429 hp, an engine that was recently introduced in the Mercedes CL550. Aston’s SUV will also be available with a hybrid powertrain and some diesels borrowed from its German partner.
Xenatech Maybach 57S Coupe
If you thought the original Maybach 57 was something to die for, well take a look at the Xenatech Maybach 57S Coupe dubbed “Cruiseiro”. You don’t see every day one of the longest 4-door limos turned into a 2-door sports coupe. The car was developed in close collaboration with the original manufacturer, Maybach, part of the Daimler Group.
The new model received some serious changes in comparison to the 4-door variant as the A-, B- and C-columns had to be completely redesigned for the new look. The hardest job was with the B-column which had to be moved back by 200 mm. The roofline is now sharper and the body was widened. The wheelbase of the car remained the same at an impressive level of 3.39 m. This new design belongs to Burch Fred Hardt, the man who also is the author of another great Maybach design, the Exelero concept (too bad that the car never went into production). From the looks of these pictures you will notice the sporty look of the 57S Coupe, but at the same time it does inspire a very conservative styling, traditional to all Maybachs.

Under the hood of the car a massive V12 6.0-liter engine was mounted, an engine that is capable of outputting 603 hp (612 PS / 450 kW) and an incredible torque of 738 lb-ft (1000 Nm). The engine allows the car to do the 0-60 mph sprint in just five seconds, onto a top speed of 171 mph (275 km/h).
With a price tag of $890,000 (675,000 Euros), this won’t be a car for the masses, especially when we take into consideration the fact that only 100 units of the Xenatech Maybach 57S Coupe will be produced. The current orders for the coupe already cover the next 9-12 months for the global markets.
Despite previous rumors and speculations, it seems that the Maybach luxury limousine brand won’t be axed by its corporate overlords from Daimler.
Instead, the brand will take full advantage of the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz S Class new generation, and will borrow the revised platform, as well as new systems and much more.
According to Automobile, the whole existing Maybach range, including the 57 and 62, will benefit from a restyled exterior, a new interior and many new technologies that will make it worthy of the large price associated with Maybach models.
Also, it seems that the four-door coupe trend will spread to the luxury brand, as a CLS-like model might be added, but with a completely convertible roof, not like the current 62 Laundaulet.
The cherry on top is that Mercedes-Benz is considering adding a small electric motor to the inside of the Maybach, which will turn the limousine into a hybrid, and even allow it to travel a certain distance on just electric power. This would not only help the Maybach become more popular, but also improve its fuel average.

Even though it didn’t achieve record sales, Daimler’s Maybach luxury brand really got the media talking with the stunning Exelero concept model (pictured above), commissioned by tire manufacturer Fulda.
Only one was made, so when it came to auctioning it off, it fetched around $8 million, presumably from an African diamond tycoon.
Now, for those who were bummed about not getting their hands on a Maybach coupe and who don’t want to order Xenatech’s 57S coupe version, are in luck. A company in Switzerland is now offering to create replica Maybach Exelero models, based on the Dodge Viper sportscar, of all things.
It will be powered by an 800HP turbocharged 8.3-liter V10 engine and boast 23-inch wheels. Interior and exterior options can be catered to the customer’s desire, but the starting price is around $680,000 (€550,000, to be exact). Interested in the offer? Then check out the official ad on JamesList.
Have you ever fantasized about getting a Maybach 57S luxury limousine but didn’t really fancy the four doors it had?
Well luckily for you and unfortunately for your wallet, tuning company Xenatech has just revealed a new customization program for the 57S which turns it into a coupe model. Besides chopping off two doors, the engineers have also widened the track of the car and lowered the roof line.
The new luxury coupe retains the same power ratings, according to Xenatech, meaning the 612 HP 6.0-liter V12 engine will propel the limousine sans two doors from 0 to 62 mph in 5 seconds. The bespoke model will sport the same facelift implemented across the Maybach range in Beijing and supposedly even has the blessing of Daimler.
Only sketches were released, but in case you’re already interested, the starting price for this modified Maybach 57S starts from €650,000 (around $800,000). Only 100 models will be made, so if you want to enjoy all that luxury but without a couple of doors, you might want to hurry up.
It’s been a long time coming, but rich people all around the world can rejoice: the Maybach lineup has received a facelift for the 2011 model year, complete with new looks, revised engines and, most importantly, more luxury features than you can shake a diamond-encrusted stick at.
First off, the 2011 Maybach lineup is likely to be the last we’ll ever see of the luxury brand, as sales are dwindling and Mercedes-Benz is losing money with the current cars. Hopefully this refresh might breathe some more life into it, but things aren’t looking good.
The facelifted Maybach, as was leaked a few months ago, has received improved looks, in terms of front and rear fascia. A chromed radiator grille was added, which varies depending on the versions rich people opt for, as well as a restyled hood, a new front bumper, revised door mirrors and improved rear taillights.
Standard 57 and 62 models get a set of 21-spoke 19-inch wheels, while S models will boast 12-spoke 20-inch ones. The new changes, according to Maybach, made the car more aerodynamic but also increased its dimensions slightly.
On the inside, the refreshed Maybach lineup really shines, as it boasts things like a 19-inch rear screen, a perfume atomizer and even a wireless internet connection. Those option for long wheelbase models will receive a new electro-transparent panoramic glass sunroof with (get ready) a liquid crystal membrane that will change the glass from transparent to opaque at the flick of a switch.
Curious to see what’s going on around the car but don’t want to get near the windows or lower the privacy screen between the chauffeur and your rich self? The Maybach has you covered, as a camera can broadcast an all-round view from the car to the aforementioned 19-inch screen. Those springing for the ‘cheaper’ 57 edition will now get to experience the reclining rear seat that was available on the 62 up until now.

In the last few days, a report has been slowly gathering up momentum in the auto industry. It seems that China’s BYD might be interested in buying Mercedes-Benz‘s luxury brand Maybach, if it will be canceled in the near future.
Considering BYD and Daimler are already collaborating in the development of small electric cars for the Chinese market, and that the current Maybach production might be shut down, the move didn’t sound that unlikely.
Luckily for purists, representatives from both companies have come forward to deny the rumors. Daimler revealed that “Maybach is an important part of Daimler’s product portfolio. There is no other decision.” BYD also explained, through a spokesman, that “It’s not true, it’s market speculation.”
As you all know, Mercedes’ Maybach brand is the peak of luxury limousines, but having only sold 200 models in 2009, things are looking bleak. A new facelift for all the range is planned to be revealed soon, but the future isn’t bright for the luxury branch.
Mercedes-Benz’s luxury brand, Maybach, seemingly has its days numbered. But before the limousine will cease manufacturing, the company decided to give it one more helping hand, with a new facelift. This facelift was now leaked in a few illustrations, showcasing its main features.
This refresh is mostly focused on the front end of the Maybach models, sporting a remodeled front bumper, hood, grille and the addition of daytime running lights, to make it more modern. Expect this facelift to be made across the lineup, including the 57, 62 and Landaulet, and all of their special editions.
The facelift, confirmed some time ago by Mercedes-Benz execs, is also scheduled to include new Euro V emissions standards for the engines under the hood of the Maybach models. Expect the refreshed limousines to be making an appeareance in April at the Beijing Auto Show.
Let’s say you’re a rich Russian man. After years of being forced to blend in and drive some awkward cars, capitalism has brought forth a wide selection of luxury vehicles, like the Bentley Continental or the Maybach 62.
But when it snows, leave those cars in the garage and just use the spare change for an SUV or something, and prevent incidents like this recent one, where a Continental and a Maybach have traded paint due to slippery road conditions in Russia’s capital, Moscow.

Great news for all you rich people with a taste for high end limousines, as Mercedes-Benz boss Dieter Zetsche revealed that the Maybach lineup of super luxury models will be getting a facelift next year in order to reward its prestigious clientèle with a more attractive model.
“The contribution of Maybach is not significant or relevant but there are only two players in this market and we are one of them. But there are no plans in the long run,” he said.
The Mercedes executive declined to comment on whether or not the brand might be terminated in the near future, further fueling the rumor fire concerning the fate of the super luxury brand. With the recession taking a toll on many wallets, this new facelift for the Maybach lineup might be the last we’ll see for the brand.
If you have more money than people earn in a lifetime, then you can certainly afford to be picky about the cars you drive, or more exactly, are driven in. For many rich people, Mercedes-Benz’s Maybach brand has been a prime target, with its 57 and 62 models.
But if the recent economic recession hasn’t thinned out your wallets, then you may want to purchase that new Maybach soon, as the boss of Mercedes, Dieter Zetsche, has revealed during the Frankfurt Motor Show that the luxury brand might soon face the cutting block. This is largely due to the fact that there aren’t many rich people buying cars these days, and that the few who are, have more discrete taste and don’t want something as opulent or as flashy as a Maybach.
Don’t forget though that the 57 and 62 have been around for quite some time and a new generation for both of them still hasn’t been confirmed or denied by Mercedes. Hopefully though, such a prestigious brand will live on, if not by being still in production maybe by its models becoming exclusive collectibles.

Home come it is now available for sale? Is Fulda selling it? No. As we found out, there’s an Austrian car dealership that ordered the car and never sold it, and are now offering it for the respective heart-stopping price. So, yes, you’d be owning a two-of a kind car, actually.
Do you want to buy it? Better hurry up before the arabians hear about it and have it modified into a station-wagon.
Some of you might remember the world’s fastest taxi we wrote about some time ago. But, while the Lamborghini Murcielago might be the fastest, it sure isn’t the most comfortable. And here are some taxis in Russia (where else?!) which really give you a comfy drive. Yeah, those are a Maybach and a Porsche Cayenne. Now, if we might say that the Cayenne is not such a surprise, who the heck would spend at least $600,000 to buy a Maybach and then turn it into a taxi. So, next time you’re in Russia and don’t want to get into a Lada cab, you might get lucky and ride into one of these, though that woul probably hurt your wallet pretty bad.
