A worthy rival for the Porsche 911 is in the works at Mercedes as the company’s officials have confirmed that a new front-engined sports cars will be out in 2014, positioned beneath the exquisite (and very expensive) SLS.
The Mercedes SLC will be a 2-seat, V8-powered car that will have a base price tag of about 75,000 pounds. The car is being developed by both MB and AMG. The latter will be responsible for taking care of the engineering, development and testing, just like they did with the aforementioned SLS.
At first, the German automaker will launch the coupe version, but in 2016 they’ll introduce a roadster variant which will feature a fabric roof. To keep the costs down to a minimum, Mercedes will use a lot of the components from the upcoming 7th generation of the SL which will be out in 2012.
The car will be powered by a naturally-aspirated version of the newest “M157” engine developed by AMG. It will be a V8 5.5-liter power unit that will produce at least 420 hp in its standard configuration. Most likely, it will be mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox, an updated version of the one we find in the SLS.
