Mini –

MINI is a surprising and “adventurer” brand and tries to keep this reputation every time it has the occasion. This time, MINI proved to be very creative, and did a really good job with the idea it had: MINI France has revealed MINI Maps, a social Google Maps mash-up advergame.

The interesting thing is that the player uses a Facebook app to create a virtual MINI accordingly to his personal preferences and then challenge his own friends to time trials on the streets just by using Google Maps mash-up. The game actually lets the player to race his friends over satellite images in different locations.

The game is totally customizable: it leaves the player to create his own tracks before getting Facebook friends into the race and, in addition, even to participate in random challenges from wherever he wants.

We think that is great that MINI has thought to integrate social media in their game and that it encourages interaction between players!

What do you think about MINI Maps? Does it worth playing?

Unveiled only a few days before the 24h endurance race at Nurburgring, Germany, the Mini Coupe Endurance is the one-off motorsport version of the recently introduced two-door Mini Coupe. The car is powered by an updated version of the 1.6-liter turbocharged engine available in the JCW model, which now generates 247 hp and has a peak torque of 243 lb.-ft, which is 39 hp and 36 lb.-ft more in comparison to the unit fitted to the road model. The top speed remains the same, rated at 149 mph.

Mini Coupe Endurance

There are no current plans of putting the car into production, but there are strong chances that this 1.6-liter engine will be upgraded for the roadgoing versions of the Cooper. We’ll keep you posted.

2013 MINI Cooper

We’ve learned from our colleagues at that the next generation of the Mini Cooper which should be out sometime in 2013 will be styled by Anders Warming. The new look will be more dramatic, featuring an upward-sweeping shoulder line, a steeply raked windscreen and a prominent front grille.

The new Mini will ride on an all-new front wheel drive platform that will be a little bit larger in comparison to the one on the current model. We don’t have in depth details about this but we can tell you that it will probably be flexible enough to spawn a 5-door hatchback, most likely the next generation of the Clubman.

The car will probably get a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine that generates 128 hp (130 PS / 96 kW) and 148 hp (150 PS / 110 kW) in diesel and gasoline variants, respectively. In addition, it will be available with a couple of engines borrowed from the BMW 1-Series in the form of some 4-cylinder 2.0-liter units, but nothing is certain at the moment. Lastly, the new Mini Cooper will get a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that will deliver 178 hp (180 PS / 132 kW) for the S version and 217 hp (220 PS / 162 kW) for the John Cooper Works (JCW) model.

The 2013 Mini Cooper will make its first appearance sometime next year at an important international motor show and will hit the dealerships the following year. We’ll keep you posted when more information will become available. Stay tuned.

Mini Coupe

After a couple of weeks of various spy shots, we now finally get to see the new Mini Coupe in a bunch of official pictures. Based on the cabriolet version, the new Coupe will be available in four different flavors: the base model Cooper, Cooper S, Cooper SD and the all mighty John Cooper Works version.

Mini Coupe

The floor structure has been taken from the aforementioned cabriolet model which means that it benefits from extra bracing in the oversized sills, along with more box-section stiffening between the fixed bulkhead located behind the front seats and the rear wheel housings. BMW says that this new model features the stiffest body in the current Mini lineup, but the downside is that it weighs 20 kg more than its hatchback sibling.

Mini Coupe

By ditching the rear seats of the cabrio, the new Coupe benefits from a more generous trunk, offering 280 liters. As you can see from these pictures, the back of the model features not one, but two spoilers as Mini installed a fixed one on the trailing edge of the roof and another flip-up spoiler that rises out of the tail once you pass 50 mph.

Mini Coupe

The Cooper S offers 181 hp and 192 lb.-ft of torque, enough for a 0-62 mph sprint time in a decent 6.9 seconds. The SD has 141 hp and a peak torque of 225 lb.-ft out of that 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine, which allows it to hit 62 mph from start in 7.9 seconds. The top-of-the range JCW manages to deliver 208 hp and 207 lb.-ft in the overboost mode, taking the Cooper to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 149 mph. All of the models get a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the JCW has an optional 6-speed automatic.

Mini Coupe

The base model will set you back at least 16,640 pounds while the JCW costs from 23,795 pounds. It will reach the showrooms in United Kingdom on October 1st.

Wetterauer Mini Countryman

The German tuners over at Wetterauer have come up with a tuning for the All4 all-wheel-drive version of the Mini Countryman S, the one that provides 184 hp and a peak torque of 240 Nm. They managed to increase the output of the engine to 235 PS and 355 Nm of torque by adding a carbon air box, reprogramming the ECU and installing a bespoke exhaust system with 200 cells sports cat as well as matt colored ceramic end pipes.

Wetterauer Mini Countryman

As you can see from these pictures, the car has a rather odd matt brown and carbon exterior finish. I have to admit that the wheels are pretty nice, measuring 8,5×18-inch. Developed by ATS, these rims are wrapped around Bridgestone Potenza tires.

Wetterauer Mini Countryman

Another modification that they’ve made to the Countryman is installing H&R suspension springs in order to improve the handling capabilities of the car. As far as the interior cabin is concerned, the Countryman features an iPad multimedia dock and exquisite English leather upholstery.

No word about the price yet, but we’ll keep you updated once Wetterauer reveals a price list for this tuning program.

AC Schnitzer Mini Cooper Eagle

If you’ve been looking for something even more powerful and quicker than the JCW version of the Mini Cooper, look no further as the guys over at AC Schnitzer have come up with this “Eagle” version. To demonstrate how fast the car really is, they took it to the famous Hockenheim circuit for some comparison testing. It managed to do a lap in 1:13.341 while the Ferrari California did it in 1:13.5, along with the BMW M3 in 1:14.3 and the Porsche 911 Turbo in 1:14.6.

AC Schnitzer Mini Cooper Eagle

This “Eagle” model has the same engine as the JCW version, but AC Schnitzer tweaked it a little bit and it now produces 260 hp (191 kW) @ 5,000 rpm and 340 Nm of torque @ 2,950 rpm. The car can now do the 0-62 mph sprint in only 5.8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 250 km/h.

AC Schnitzer Mini Cooper Eagle

They managed to squeeze more power out of that engine by installing a new ECU, modifying the intercooler and the turbo and using a stainless steel exhaust system that has a racing catalyst. In addition, the car got a sport clutch, a lightweight ion battery, a limited slip differential, anti-roll bars and a racing suspension.

As far as the aerodynamic package is concerned, AC Schnitzer fitted this Mini with a new hood, a rear diffuser, boot lid, new doors and wings, along with a rear spoiler – all made out of carbon fiber to shave off a few pounds.

The price tag for the fastest Mini Cooper JCW is 62,000 Euros.

PS: These are the Hockenheim lap times:

AC Schnitzer EAGLE : 1:13,3 min. Ferrari California: 1:13,5 min. Mercedes CLK 63 AMG Black Series : 1:13,8 min. Porsche 911 Carrera S: 1:14,3 min. BMW M3 : 1:14,3 min. Porsche 911 Turbo: 1:14,6 min Audi RS 4: 1:15,4 min. Mercedes C63 AMG: 1:15,7 min. BMW Alpina B3 Coupe: 1:16,1 min. Audi RS 6: 1:17,6 min.

According to a new study made by the UK women’s car insurance specialist Diamond, the most popular car among hairdressers is MINI One hatchback. Apparently, MINI brand has two vehicles in the top five, which we consider to be quite a success for the BMW Group’s car manufacturer.

The study was made over 18,000 British hairdressers and revealed the fact that MINI One is three and a half times more likely to be driven by a person working as a hairdresser than anybody else. On the second and third places in the top are Vauxhall Tigra, a convertible from GM’s Europe and Volkswagen New Beetle – they are both more than three times as popular with hairdressers than the rest of the UK. On the last positions we find Ford Ka and Mini Cooper.

“It’s not surprising that the Mini One is so popular amongst hairdressers, as it’s stylish, modern and looks great. (…) In fact, with two Mini models in the top 5, that certainly cements its place as the ultimate ‘hairdresser’s car’.”

said Diamond managing director, Elwyn Gedrych.

But this is not all: the study has also revealed the fact that British hairdressers are 33% more likely to drive a convertible model than drivers from other professions.

What do you think about those results: should MINI One be considered the official hairdressers’ car?

Superchips MINI Cooper S R56

The engineers over at Superchips revealed this week their phase 2 upgrade for the Mini Cooper S R56. This ECU is compatible with the units manufactured after March 1st, 2010; the ones with the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that produces 181 hp (184 PS) in its standard configuration. With this phase 2 upgrade, the power is raised by 25 hp @ 3,765 rpm and 32 Nm from 3000 and 6000 rpm.

Despite the fact that this upgrade program increases the power of the engine, Superchips says that the fuel consumption of the car remains exactly the same, at 48 mpg.

If you own a Mini Cooper S R56 and you want this ECU, prepare to pay 455 pounds. This upgrade program comes with a 12-month / 30,000 miles supplementary full vehicle warranty.

MINI Inspired by Goodwood

The “Mini Inspired by Goodwood” was introduced a couple of weeks ago at the Shanghai Auto Show and the automaker has announced that it will use the Goodwood badge for the most luxurious Minis, just like they do with the John Cooper Works (JCW) for the high-performance variants.

MINI Inspired by Goodwood

According to BMW sources, the first Goodwood will go on sale in spring 2012 and there are going to be only 1,000 units available. The starting price in mainland Europe is going to be a whopping 47,000 Euros. It will be available in a single specification in either Mini’s Reef Blue metallic or the Rolls shade of Diamond Black metallic. The cars will not be individually numbered, but they will have a console plaque that says “One of 1000”.

MINI Inspired by Goodwood

As a reminder, the Goodwood features the same materials that Rolls Royce uses in its own cars and it was overseen by RR’s designer Alan Sheppard. The dashboard, seats and the center console have been finished in the Rolls Cornsilk leather and the wood veneers of the dash also come from Rolls.

MINI Inspired by Goodwood

Under the bonnet is a twin-scroll turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that produces 181 hp, borrowed from the Cooper S. This power unit can be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. As standard, the Mini Inspired by Goodwood will feature adaptive xenon lights and a Harman Kardon sound system.

Mini Folding Bike

A popular trend among car manufacturers these days is to launch overpriced bikes. Joining the group is Mini with its Folding Bike, priced at $728 (499 Euros). The bike was developed for those customers that spend a lot of their time in crowded cities and Mini says that when folded, it’s small enough to fit in any of the company’s models.

Mini Folding Bike

The folding bike has a lightweight aluminum frame and a simple folding mechanism, allowing it to be folded / unfolded in a matter of seconds. It collapses along the crossbar and handlebars so that it will take up a limited space. Customers can also retract the saddle and the pedals can be folded up, making it very easy to handle.

Mini Folding Bike

With a curb weight of only 24 lbs (11 kg), it is very easy to carry around. It has 8 gears and 20-inch wheels. The chain is teflon-coated in order to prevent soiling that is caused by chaing oil. Other goodies include mudguards and a gel saddle. It will be offered in a matte black paint finish with a couple of silver highlights, like the brand logo on the handlebars, the “Mini” lettering on the crossbar, as well as the British flag on the rear forks. As you can see from the photos, the bell and the chain are finished in neon yellow.

Mini Folding Bike

It will be available starting with this August at select Mini dealers and on the company’s German online store.

Mini Inspired by Goodwood

The Shanghai Motor Show was never an important venue for car manufacturers, but lately more and more automakers have brought their latest offerings to the Chinese market, increasing the importance of this automotive event. Later on this month we are going to see a lot of cool cars, here are just a few examples: BMW M5 Concept, Audi Q3, Mercedes A-Class Concept, Subaru XV, along with the new Chevrolet Malibu and the Buick Envision crossover. Of course, Mini will be there too.

They will bring the Goodwood show car in Shanghai and for this occasion they’ve revealed this teaser image. The car is the result of a joint venture between Mini and Rolls-Royce and its official name is “Mini Inspired by Goodwood”. We’ll probably see a Mini exterior and a Rolls-Royce interior. Price tag? Probably something in between.
