During the last few weeks, just after famed MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi went to Ferrari’s Formula 1 team and did a few practice laps on a Barcelona circuit, many voices have been talking about his oft-rumored switch, from two to four wheels.

We’ve even seen his team manager at Yamaha say, jokingly at least, that his major fear is that Ferrari might steal Rossi from his group. The CEO of the Italian supercar manufacturer, Luca di Montezemolo also revealed a few days ago that Rossi has the potential to become a Formula 1 champion.

Now though, Rossi himself released a statement in which he says that it’s highly unlikely for him to make a switch to Formula 1, at least for the moment.

“I had the chance to drive the Ferrari F1 car in Barcelona,” he said, “It was great, I had fun and it was a very good test, with good lap times, but I think that it will be very difficult to see me driving in Formula One.”

The rider’s switch to F1, at least for the moment, is only possible if teams will be allowed to race a third car in the future, as not even Ferrari doesn’t want to sacrifice a trained F1 driver for the potential Rossi showed.

Valentino Rossi, the famous and successful MotoGP rider took advantage of the recent vacation between the seasons of the bike competition, and went to the Ferrari Formula 1 team and asked them to take their car on the circuit.

His performance impressed everyone, and even prompted the boss of the Yamaha team, for which Rossi rides in MotoGP, to say that he feels threatened by Ferrari. Now, the boss of the Italian sportscar manufacturer, Luca di Montezemolo, revealed that the team would welcome Rossi, and said that he has the potential to become an F1 champion.

“He’s a friend and an undisputed champion, from Emilia-Romagna, a great fan of Formula 1 and engines, and also a potential Formula 1 champion,” he said. “If there was the possibility in 2011 and he wanted to do it and had the possibility for testing and adapting to F1, then why not?”

Montezemolo also talked about the much debated third car issue in F1, which would allow teams to have more drivers in the competition. This debate currently has two sides, the big teams which can afford putting a third car on the track, and the smaller ones, which can’t really invest in maintaining a third racer.

But Montezemolo believes a compromise can be reached, as the cars would be given to independent racers, which would only need to take care of the maintenance, and be spared of spending a huge amount of money developing the car from scratch.

Now though, the third car for F1 teams is still just in the idea phase, and might take some time before it is really up for discussion at FIA, which supervises the motorsport competition.

Without a doubt one of the greatest riders in recent history is Valentino Rossi, managing to win an astounding six MotoGP titles and will be targeting a seventh one during the 2010 season. But while he isn’t busy riding on two wheels for Yamaha in MotoGP, the Italian has also honed his skills with four-wheel vehicles.

And don’t think any regular car, as the bike rider went straight to Ferrari and asked to borrow its Formula 1 race car and take for a few laps on the Jerez circuit. The performance of the Italian impressed everyone, as he managed to constantly improve his lap times.

This has really given its Yamaha manager Davide Brivio something to worry about, as he has just declared that such performance in another sport might make him change his profession. “I have to be worried about these excellent times because Valentino really could get the desire to change sport. The greatest danger is Ferrari (not MotoGP rivals Ducati),” said the team boss.

Ferrari has expressed interest in Rossi, but according to the team manager, Stefano Domenicali, such a possibility would exist only if a third car was eligible to race in future Formula 1 seasons.
