A recent survey conducted be the Esure car insurance company revealed that about 650,000 accidents that took place in 2006 were caused by drivers being distracted by bugs and insects.

Three quarters (75 per cent) of drivers revealed that rogue bugs drove them to distraction, so much so that over a million (four per cent) motorists admitted to slamming on the brakes when an insect flew into their car. Worryingly, an additional fifth of motorists (21 per cent) said they took their hands off the wheel to either swat or flick out an unwanted bug.

Cellular Detection System from Highway Safety & Technology (HST) came up with a new system to help the police identifying those who use cellphones while driving. The system works like the regular speed radars, it is either mobile or fixed and it detects when a phone is used in the car and a photo is taken automatically.

Now I’m not saying that’s a bad idea, on the contrary, it’s only for the best, because drivers using cellphone are the cause of more and more accidents these days. But the system sucks. I mean, what happens when a passenger and not the driver is using the phone or the driver uses a headset? So the police should really invest time and money into either coming up with a good system, either taking care of the real problems out there. The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline today was $3.23 a gallon, up 2 cents compared with Tuesday, May 22. The average price is 37 cents higher today than it was a month ago, according to AAA, of Heathrow, Fla.

The average prices of midgrade unleaded and premium unleaded gasoline also are slightly higher compared with three days ago. Drivers are paying $3.42 a gallon for midgrade, up 1 cent, and $3.55 a gallon for premium, up 2 cents compared with Tuesday.

Diesel prices remained much lower than the high set in 2005. The national average price reported today was $2.92 a gallon, compared with the record $3.24 a gallon on Oct. 24, 2005.

Low gasoline inventories have been blamed for the high prices, with outages continuing to plague U.S. refiners. It looks like refiners are reluctant to invest capital to upgrade plants because they are unsure what effect the government’s push for biofuels will have on their future.

The House of Representatives has passed a bill that would penalize oil companies, traders and operators found guilty of price gouging. President Bush is expected to veto the bill if it reaches his desk, concerned that price controls could lead to shortages, according to the Associated Press.

Drivers in Bridgeport, Calif., are still seeing the highest prices in the US, at $4.09 a gallon. At $2.69 a gallon, drivers in Sherman, Miss., are seeing the lowest prices across the United States. Read More: “Gasoline price to go up again in the US”

Some bad news for the European car enthusiasts. It seems like Ford will quit developing the RS for the next year MkII Ford Focus. One of the most appreciated cars from Ford, the Focus RS sported WRC-inspired looks and handling, and was powered by a turbocharged 215-horsepower 2.0L Duratec engine.

A spokesman from Ford revealed that the prototype models seen testing in recent months were developed to test high-performance parts for other future products and that at no point was there ever a business case for an RS-badged Focus. Another sign is the report that an UK customer who placed a deposit for the next generation RS got his money back, the dealer informing him that the project was canceled because of concerns over carbon-dioxide emissions.

However, there is still hope, because it seems that the RS could be back for the next generation MkIII Ford Focus which will arrive in 2010.

New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today that the city’s yellow taxi cabs will go green within five years, as part of a larger push to make New York a more environmental friendly city.

As part of a plan that Bloomberg hopes to serve as a model for other large cities, 1,000 hybrid taxis would be introduced by October 2008, and that hybrids would gradually replace the rest of the city’s 13,000 taxi cabs by 2012.

The hybrid vehicles are powered by gasoline and electricity, and they emit less exhaust and have better gas mileage than other vehicles. Even if hybrid cars are usually more expensive, the plan would save cab drivers more than $10,000 per year in gasoline and other expenses. Read More: “New York green cabs by 2012”

We announced you some time ago that “General Lee“, the legendary 1969 Dodge Charger from “Dukes of Hazzard” was sold on eBay for $9,900,500. Apparently, the bid was fake, so John Schneider (Bo Duke) decided to put the car up for sale again. This time, the starting price was set to $1,000,000 and, to prevent fake bids, in order to place a bid, an user first has to register with Auction Wire.

Just like the first time happened, a lot of critics showed up, arguing that the car doesn’t worth more then $200,000 or maybe $300,000. But it seems that the car’s history makes it worth much more than that. We’ll let you know when news show up about the auction. Read More: ““General Lee” up for sale again”

DaimlerChrysler AG decided the future of Chrysler, by selling 80% of the stocks to Cerberus Capital Management, for a sum close to $7.4 billion. A bad deal if you compare it to the $36 billion spent to merge the two companies back in 1998. DaimlerChrysler AG will now be renamed to Daimler AG, and it will keep 20% of Chrysler, plus it will give them a $400 million loan.

So, after two months of negotiations with several bidders, the fate of Chrysler if finally decided. DaimlerChrysler first mentioned that Chrysler is up for sale in February, following the announcement of a $1.5 billion loss and a restructuring plan that would cost up to 13,000 jobs. No, its not a prank, “General Lee”, the 1969 Dodge Charger which appeared on the classic show “Dukes of Hazzard” was sold on eBay for an eye-popping $9.9 million. Yup, no mistake. The winning bid was $9,900,500.00. Impressive. The car was owned by John Schneider (Bo Duke) before starring in Warner Bros production and becoming a myth. It even has a scratch from one of the shootings. If the buyer will pay, “General Lee” will become the second most expensive car sold on eBay, after Christie’s Auction House sold a rare 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royal Sports Coupe for $11 million. Here’s some interesting news. Last year David Beckham’s armored BMW X5 was stolen from Spain capital, Madrid. Through some strange coincidence, the bodyguard who took care of the car “forgot” to start the tracking program which monitors the car and prevents thefts like this. Strange for someone who is probably paid very good for this job. The soccer superstar bought this car after a kidnap attempt made on his wife, Victoria.

The $180,000 car was seized by the Macedonian police after two guys, apparently from the Bulgarian mafia, were caught at the Greece border. The Macedonian interior minister, who currently uses the car, said that she will gladly return the car to the soccer star if it turns out its his car. No reaction so far from Beckham, who now lives in the US, after signing a whooping $250 million five-year contract with LA Galaxy. Read More: “Beckam’s Stolen BMW X5 Shows Up In Macedonia”

As you probably know, DaimlerChrysler’s US Division is for sale, and it appears a bidding war has started, as DaimlerChrysler’s stocks closed at $82.36, highest value since August 2000. So far, it seems that Magna International Inc, in association with an unknown private-equity firm placed a $4.6 billion offer. Offers are also expected from Cerberus Capital Management and a partnership of the Blackstone Group and Centerbridge Partners. However, none of these information is official and we’ll have to wait and see what happends. Read More: “DaimlerChrysler Bidding War”
