Hybrid Mercedes E-Class heading to Detroit Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID

The German automaker Mercedes-Benz will be bringing to the upcoming Detroit Motor Show the hybrid version of the E-Class. At the show which will be organized in January we’ll see the E300 BlueTec that will be available in both sedan and estate versions. Under its hood it will be a 4-cylinder 2.1-liter turbocharged diesel engine. The carmaker will also be bringing the U.S.-only E400 which is powered by a gasoline engine.

The Mercedes-Benz E300 BlueTec has CO2 emissions of only 109 g/km, which is 40 g/km less than the gasoline-powered BMW Active5 Hybrid. Its diesel engine is capable of developing 201 hp and a peak torque of 369 lb.-ft, and it is linked to a 27 hp / 184 lb.-ft brushless electric motor which is installed inside the gearbox housing.

The 0.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack will be able to provide an all-electric range of less than a mile at speeds below 35 mph. The car should be able to do the 0-62 mph sprint in a decent 7.5 seconds and will be able to hit a top speed of 150 mph.

The E300 BlueTec will be capable of returning 67.3 mpg UK on the combined cycle, thanks to a series of fuel-saving techniques, like brake energy recuperation, stop/start system, low rolling resistance tires and a sailing mode. This means that the car will be 9.6 mpg UK more economical than the current E250 CDI sedan.

As far as the aforementioned U.S.-only E400 is concerned, this one will have a V6 3.5-liter engine linked to the same electric motor as the one in the E300. The car will be able to deliver 32.4 mpg US.

Future Infiniti M and G might share platform with Mercedes-Benz E Class

The auto industry was pretty surprised a few weeks ago when Daimler and the Renault Nissan alliance announced a new partnership regarding platform and engine sharing. The goal of the new alliance is to save up to $1 billion in research and development costs.

We know many of those collaborations will occur for the small car segment, but according to a new report from Japan’s Best Car, bigger models will also see some sharing going on.

According to the mag, the future Infiniti M and G models might soon use the same platform as the Mercedes-Benz E Class. If it will come true, this would mean some serious benefits and saved costs for both luxury brands.

The M and G, together with the E Class are primarily considered bread and butter models, meaning their high sales result in considerable profits. If the manufacturing costs will be reduced, an even larger profit will be scooped.

Still, even if this platform sharing possibility sounds great, we’re not holding our breaths. What about you? Would you welcome such a change?

With the summer season approaching, Mercedes-Benz is kicking its marketing campaign for the new E Class Cabriolet into overdrive.

As such, it has released new photos of its convertible model, in order to further promote it. Shown in the E350 BlueEfficiency and the E500 with AMG sports accessories versions, the model is looking very attractive.

As you all know, it is based on the E Class Coupe, and will receive a variety of engine options. It’s also pioneering a lot of new technologies for a convertible, including the AirCap, which protects inhabitants from gushing winds, and the AirScarf, which, in lack of some better terms, blows hot air around your neck.

Either way, check out the new pics with the Mercedes-Benz E Class Cabriolet (Convertible in some markets) in the photo gallery below. For more images, head on over to the complete gallery.

Brabus unveils E V12 Coupe: 800 HP Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe

Brabus sure loves to fiddle with Mercedes-Benz models, and after releasing the E V12 sedan at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, the tuners decided that the E Class Coupe would also be worthy of such a treatment.

As such, the 6.3-liter twin-turbo V12 found its way onto the E V12 Coupe, and was showcased at last week’s Geneva Motor Show. Power figures are much unchanged, with the engine developing 800 HP and 1047 lb-ft of torque. This translates into a 0 to 62 mph time of just 3.7 seconds, and a top speed of 230 mph.

Besides the beefed up engine, larger brakes, performance coilover suspension and a set of 19-inch wheels. As with any Brabus tuning project, carbon fiber was used extensively on everything from the front spoiler, to the rear fenders, intake system of interior seats and trim.

So, how much is it going to cost this hugely powerful coupe? Around €478,000 (almost $650,000).

Mercedes-Benz reveals MercedesSport accessories program

In a rather peculiar move, but which will be definitely welcomed by many fans, Mercedes-Benz announced a new accessories program, dubbed MercedesSport, which will run in parallel with the AMG one for existing MB models.

The new styling programs will be showcased next week at the Geneva Motor Show on the E Class models, including the sedan, estate and coupe. They will include new 18-inch alloy wheels, either in glossy black or silver, and aerodynamic upgrades with a new front apron and spoiler, side skirts and even roof or decklid spoilers, depending on your preferred variant.

The MercedesSport package will also include performance upgrades, with features like sportier brakes or suspension, as well as lowered ride height. For the inside customers can opt for things like perforated leather, four-spoke steering wheel, paddle shifters or stainless steel pedals.

Overall, for people who got tired of the same old AMG accessories, the new MercedesSport ones will offer some variety.

VATH reveals V50S based on Mercedes-Benz E500 Coupe

After tuning the Mercedes-Benz E Class E63 AMG performance model, the team at VÄTH Automobiltechnik have tried their hands on the most powerful model in the regular lineup of the E Class Coupe, the E500.

The result of said tinkering? An increase in power of 46 HP, to a total of 429 HP and a torque rating of 424 lb-ft (575 Nm). This was achieved thanks to an optimized ECU, and the addition of a new sports air filter and exhaust system.

Customers will also be able to order a set of 20-inch three-piece Smiths wheels, coming with adjustable suspension and shock absorbers, as well as a new braking system with six-piston calipers. The exterior has also been redesigned with a new front fascia, decklid spoiler, and a carbon fiber rear diffuser. For the inside, VATH has prepared custom leather and carbon trim.

Vath tunes the Mercedes-Benz E Class E63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz really changed the way people look at its E Class with the current generation, but even though it has a more aggressive style, there are plenty of things to be improved upon, even in the top-of-the-range E63 AMG performance model, at least according to the tuning crew at VÄTH Automobiltechnik.

Entitled the Vath V63RS, the model sports a new bodykit, with a starless grille, a boot spoiler, a new carbon fiber diffuser, and a front lip spoiler from the same material. The suspension has been lowered by 30mm, and a set of 20-inch forged three-piece wheels, with high performance tires, were also fitted. For the inside, you can get special carbon trim, and velour floor mats, with the logo of the tuning company.

But what’s really interesting about this project is the increased performance. The team enlarged the cylinder head channels, installed a new ECU, added performance parts like pistons, valves or cam shafts, fitted a larger air intake and bigger exhaust valves. What do you get from all these new pieces? A whopping 605 HP and 690 Nm of torque, an increase of 87 HP and 60 Nm from the standard figures. This translates in a 0 to 62 mph time of 4.1 seconds, while the top speed is a dizzying 211 mph (340 km/h).

Overall, the E63 was quite extreme, but thanks to the Vath crew, you’ll think the stock model was pretty slow.

Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe gets aerodynamic package from Lorinser

The Mercedes-Benz E Class is one very attractive model, the E Class Coupe even more so, but according to Lorinser, a few aerodynamic and cosmetic touches wouldn’t hurt to be implemented in the two-door German luxury model.

As such, the company launched a new tuning package, which sadly doesn’t contain any performance upgrades, just cosmetic enhancements, in order to make the car even more aggressive.

Included in the body kit are a new front spoiler, restyled LED lights in the lower part of the bumper, a new grille which replaces the classic Mercedes one, the rear spoiler received a new deflector, while the boot lid received a discreet wing. The package is completed by a four-pipe exhaust system and a set of 20-inch wheels.

For the inside, the company added aluminum pedal, a new dashboard, including a speedometer which goes up to 330 km/h (205 mph). Of course, the illuminated Lorinser logo in the door sills are also included.

Mercedes-Benz E Class Convertible gets detailed, 2 videos and photo gallery included

Mercedes-Benz has finally decided to reveal its upcoming E Class Convertible model, which you can call everything from a cabriolet to a cabrio. The point is, it will replace the CLK convertible model, and will be based on the already available E Class coupe.

The very attractive model will appear on the market in March, 2010, and will share many similarities with the coupe model, including size and engine options, which range from V6 and four-cylinder diesels to V6 and four-cylinder gasoline ones, and will also include the top-of-the-range V8 gasoline one.

The folding cloth top will go up or down in around 20 seconds, and will still leave a bit of room in the boot for your luggage, just remember to pack light. Two new systems will also be fitted to this new model: the AirCap and AirScarf. The first will consist of a set of deflectors, which will raise from the upper edge of the windshield, and prevent air from entering the cabin. The latter will provide neck-level heating, so that customers can see the sun even in those chilly days.

Overall, I think the new E Class convertible looks great. See for yourself in the photo gallery below, and hit the jump to see a video presentation of the model and a demonstration of the AirCap system.

Brabus set to reveal the E V12: 800 HP Mercedes E Class in Frankfurt

The new Mercedes-Benz E Class is quite a looker, having strayed away from the classic MB traditional and offered a more aggressive design. But when it comes to models from the German manufacturer, you can be sure that the tuning team at Brabus believes an improvement can be made. That is why the company will present the Brabus E V12 at this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, a heavily modified version of the W 212 version of ther E Class, which will be powered, as the name implies, by the massive 6.3 liter V12 engine, assisted by two turbos, which will deliver 800 HP and 1,100 Nm of torque.

With the new engine, the car will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h or 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, and to a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). But even though it is a truly epic engine, the fuel average isn’t through the roof, as you would expect: the Brabus E V12 averages 15.7 liters/100 km (15 mpg). Also, its CO2 emissions are around 372 g/km.

Don’t think that the tuning crew just swapped the engine, as new sport suspensions have also been fitted, with new stabilizers, a performance brake system and 19 inch alloy wheels, all to satisfy the brand new motor. On the outside, a revamped front spoiler, new side panels, revamped side skirts and an interesting aerodynamic shield on the rear wheels carefully paint the aggressive lines of the model. Inside the team outfitted it with black Alcantara leather and carbon fiber inserts.

In case this version really caught your attention, you’d better have 600,000 euros available and a ticket to the Frankfurt Motor Show where one of the 10 models due to be made will be showed to the general public. Stay tuned for more pics straight from the showroom floor.
