Top 10 Songs About Cars –

We thought that after last week’s top 10 best movies about cars, another one about the coolest car-related songs is in order. Feel free to suggest other songs that we haven’t included in the top. Some of the songs that made it into Top Gear’s top 10 have also been included here.

Metallica – Fuel

From Metallica’s “ReLoad” album released in 1998, we find “Fuel”, which was used for several years for the televised NASCAR events. In the song, the frontman of the band, James Hetfield, proclaims his love for all cars that are over-driven and chrome-plated.

The Beatles – Drive My Car

The song is about a young man who is seduced by a would-be starlet into quitting his regular day job to become her limo driver, but the catch is that she doesn’t actually own a car. I’m not a fan of the Beatles but this song is very nice.

Queen – Don’t Stop Me Now

Released in 1978 on Queen’s Jazz album, the song was written by legendary Freddie Mercury. At that time, it was considered to be one of the lesser songs in Queen’s repertory, but it turned out to be a very good driving song after all.

The Beach Boys – Little Deuce Coupe

Considered to be Brian Wilson’s ode to the epic 1932 Model B Ford Coupe, the album features a series of car-themed songs and is considered to be one of the first albums about cruising and driving.

Gary Numan – Cars

One of my favorite songs of all times, Gary Numan’s Cars is part of “The Pleasure Principle” album released in 1979. The artist got its inspiration from a scary road rage incident – while stuck in London’s traffic, Numan had to use his car as a “protective shell” when he was assaulted by a group of pissed of drivers.

Golden Earring – Radar Love

The subject of this song is the point of view of a car driver that drives to his lover and communes with her without physical means like letters or telephone. In his radio, he hears Brenda Lee’s “Coming on Strong”.

The Clash – Brand New Cadillac

A cover of Vince Taylor’s 1958 track, it is part of the band’s 1979 “London Calling” album, probably one of the best driving songs ever written.

Fleetwood Mac – The Chain

Part of the band’s best-selling album “Rumors”, the song has a basic rock structure, despite the fact that it has two different portions: the main verse and chorus, and the outro. Probably one of the best songs of the late 70s.

War – Low Rider

This song has been covered by dozens of bands and featured in endless TV shows and movies. Part of the band 1975 “Why can’t we be friends?” album, it is a lifestyle-defining celebration of Latino car-customizing and cruising.

Steppenwolf – Born To Be Wild

By far the best song about cars in my opinion is Steppenwolf’s “Born to be wild”. It was the soundtrack of the epic movie Easy Rider, released in 1969, and All Music Guide’s Hal Horowitz described it as “a roaring anthem of turbo-charged riff rock.” A truly epic song in my opinion, even if you’re not a car fan.
