VW Bulli

A few months ago, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen revealed the interesting Bulli concept and rumors regarding a possible production version surfaced right away. According to recent reports, the car will indeed go into production sometime in 2014 and it will carry most of the concept’s features.

VW Bulli

VW is expected to make the 2014 Bulli an electric people carrier and we should see a car slightly a little bit bigger than the Polo, with a 5-passenger configuration. The production version will measure 3.99 m in length, 1.75 m in width and 1.70 m in height, while the curb weight will be less than 1.5 tons.

There is a strong possibility that when it will come out it will have the same electric powertrain as the concept, which means that we should expect a motor that generates 115 PS and 260 Nm of torque. According to VW, this motors & lithium-ion battery pack combo is capable of providing the Bulli with a driving range of up to 186 miles (300 km).

Let’s hope that these rumors will turn out to be true and in 2014 we shall see a production version of the Volkswagen Bulli.

VW Bulli

According to our colleges from Autocar, Volkswagen plans on introduction a production version of their Bulli Microbus Concept that we saw this year in Geneva. Sources say that the company’s research and development chief Ulrich Hackenberg has confirmed that the Bulli is based on the Modular Design System – MDS platform and it will probably be built at the automaker’s factory in Mexico.

This MDS platform might be a part of VW’s new MQB modular transverse architecture that they have developed which will underpin a lot of future models, like the next-gen Golf and A3 models. This architecture will be flexible enough in order to allow for models of varying wheelbase and track dimensions to be manufactured on the same platform, cutting down the costs.

As a reminder, The Volkswagen Bulli Microbus has a 3+3 seating configuration (two rows of three-seat benches) and it measures 3.99 m in length, 1.75 m in width and 1.70 m in height. The wheelbase measures 2.62 m and it has a wide track for those 3-seater benches at 1.50 m.

The model we saw in Geneva was an EV but VW said that it can be easily adapted to accept various small gasoline and diesel engines, which will make it more suitable for a production model.

Volkswagen Bulli

The German automaker Volkswagen will bring this week to Geneva a new concept model named Bulli, which is a development of the Microbus study from 10 years ago. It will be a more compact car if we look at its dimensions: 3.99 meters long, 1.75 meters wide and 1.70 meters tall. It will have a 2.62 wheelbase and can accommodate six people, three in the front and three in the back (3+3).

The 370-liters boot volume can be extended to 1,600 liters when the rear bench is folded. The VW Bulli can be turned into a camper van thanks to the seat system that can be transformed into a large reclining surface.

In the center console, VW has installed a removable iPad that acts like an infotainment touchscreen, controlling various functions like the Bluetooth hands-free phone, media center and the navigation system.

The Bulli has been fitted with an electric motor that is linked to a battery, allowing the concept to cover up to 185 miles (300 km) on a single charge. The output of this motor is 85 kW and the torque value is 199 lb.-ft (270 Nm), available instantly.  The 40-kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged in less than an hour at an electric refueling station, according to the automaker.

The Volkswagen Bulli is able to sprint to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds, onto a top speed of 87 mph (140 km/h). This concept can also incorporate traditional petrol and diesel power units, with displacements between 1.0 and 1.4-liter.

The German manufacturer didn’t say anything about the possibility to start making the car, but admits it “”has the potential to establish a new, fifth brand of people carrier next to the Caddy, Touran, Sharan and its large counterpart – the Caravelle.”
