2012 Volvo S60 R-Design
At the 2011 New York Auto Show, Swedish automaker Volvo announced that the R-Design variants of the 2012 S60 and XC60 models are going to be available with more power in comparison to the outgoing versions and they will hit the North American showrooms at the end of this summer.

The updated T6 turbocharged gasoline engine that powers both models will pack 321 hp and 354 lb.-ft of torque, up by 21 hp and 29 lb.-ft. The power will be sent to all four wheels through Volvo’s second generation of the 6-speed automatic gearbox, which will provide smoother changes and less friction.

Other modifications to the R-Design versions include updates of the chassis, strut brace under the hood and “monotube” dampers for the S60 model, replacing the twin-tube dampers of the outgoing generation. In addition, the suspension will be lowered, offering the cars a more aggressive look.

Volvo is lining up with the big trends followed by other European carmakers and is reportedly planning a compact crossover model, set to be based on the popular C30 three-door hatchback model.
The new car, presumably following the already known name convention, will be called the XC30, and will most likely slot in below the current Swedish crossover model, the XC60. Expect many of its underpinnings to be almost the same as the C30′s, while a heightened suspension and a few off-road features will be added.
In terms of design, it will definitely be a mix of the regular small hatch and the XC60. Expect almost the same types of engines and transmissions. It will be interesting to see if a flex-fuel engine will also be a part of the future XC30 lineup.
A V30 wagon variant of the current C30 is also rumored to appear in the near future, but don’t cross your fingers just yet, as Volvo is more focused on the XC30 which will likely appear around 2012.

Sigh, I was hoping that the Twilight phenomenon would escape the car industry, but it seems that Volvo is quite bent on using the hype that the film saga is experiencing and wants to promote its models which are prominently featured in the films.
The newest campaign started by the Swedish manufacturer is focusing on the upcoming premiere of the second movie in the saga, New Moon, in which the main male character, Edward Cullen, swapped his old C30 from the first movie (arguably one of the best parts of it, but that’s just my opinion), with a manlier, or should I say vampier-er XC60.
“Volvo is central to Edward’s character in the Twilight saga,” said Jeff Pugliese, president and CEO of Volvo Canada. “One lucky fan will be the first to solve all of the puzzles in Volvo’s What Drives Edward contest and win a new XC60. While the XC60 doesn’t come equipped with a vampire, the winner will experience the power, beauty and protection that is Volvo, and it will transport them to all of their great moments in life.”
In order to win either an XC60 or tickets to the world premiere of New Moon, people will need to visit the WhatDrivesEdward website and answer many questions regarding the popular movie and book series. Be advised that it is only available for Canadian fans of the vampire stories as Volvo Cars of Canada is organizing the competition.
The contest starts will start on November 1 and continue onto November 23, and besides the big prizes, will also offer exclusive content like wallpapers or trailers. You never know who might win, so guys you’d better get your girlfriends to enter the contest.

After a lot of photos leaked on the net, Volvo decided to made an official announcement of the Volvo XC60 crossover which will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Fredrik Arp, Volvo Cars President and CEO said: “It’s not only the safest Volvo ever. If you ask me, it’s also the most stunning. Not a bad combination, is it?”. So, is he right or just talking big words?
As we already said, the car’s design is pretty cool, being close to the Volvo XC60 concept, presented last year at Detroit. Known as a producer that makes some of the safest cars out there, Volvo has equipped the XC60 with the latest safety technologies and the most important new feature is the City Safety system, which comes into action when the car is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself.
As for the engines, the Volvo XC60 will be offered with three engines: the 285 hp turbocharged T6 and two versions of the D5 turbodiesel, producing 185 and 163 horsepower. All vehicles are fitted with All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) as standard. Next year, Volvo plans to introduce a front wheel version also, powered by a 163 hp Euro 5 diesel engine.
The Volvo XC60 will be built at the Volvo plant in Ghent, Belgium and sales will start during 2008′s second half (Europe) and early 2009 (US). Volvo hopes to sell over 50,000 units per year.
After the jump you can see more photos, a video of the XC60 and the full press release.

Volvo planned to officially unveil their production-ready Volvo XC60 crossover on February 20, before its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which starts on March 4. But we all know that the Internet is an evil place and these leaked photo of the new SUV showed up on the web.
First revealed as the Volvo XC60 Concept at last year’s Detroit show, we can see that Volvo managed to keep the production-ready version’s design pretty close to the concept’s look, though the photos we have here are not the best. All the details we have so far are some rumors telling that the Volvo XC60 will hit showrooms sometime in the second half of 2008, but stay tuned, because as soon as we have some official info, we’ll let you know.
Check out the rest of the leaked photos after the jump.
